Sources: Celtics close to deal for Garnett

ESPN: The Minnesota Timberwolves and Boston Celtics, who nearly completed a blockbuster Kevin Garnett trade before the June draft, have resurrected those trade talks and are again in serious discussions, according to NBA front-office sources.

Sources told ESPN.com on Sunday night that former teammates Kevin McHale and Danny Ainge have revived a deal that would end Garnett’s 12-season association with Minnesota by sending him to Ainge’s Celtics, with the Wolves getting back two of the assets McHale coveted most last month: Al Jefferson and Theo Ratliff’s expiring contract.

The deal, however, depends on Garnett softening his stance on playing in Boston, with sources indicating late Sunday that Garnett could be warming to the idea.

Garnett effectively blocked the Celtics’ first attempt at trading for him by making it clear, through agent Andy Miller, that he would opt out of the final year of his contract — which is worth $23 million — and leave the Celtics in the summer of 2008 because he doesn’t want to play there. Unless it wants to part with the blossoming Jefferson for a one-year KG rental, Boston has to have a strong indication that it can keep Garnett long-term before making the trade.

But Garnett might now be amenable to the move, after the fiercely loyal 31-year-old learned how far along the Wolves were in negotiations with Boston in June … and with the Celtics responding to the breakdown of its initial KG pursuit by trading the fifth overall pick in the draft to Seattle for All-Star shooting guard Ray Allen.

Don’t know about anybody else, but does this smell of Kevin McHale knowing he’s on his way out of Minnesota and what better way of helping his old team get better than to make this trade? He’s already taken a beating for his stupid moves so why worry about it now? McHale won’t get another job after they fire him so why not help Ainge and his old Celtics out of their losing ways. Anybody who thinks Al Jefferson and a couple of bench players for KG is a fair trade only live in Boston!

guys remember that it’s the deal that come out of nowhere that happen…

those that leaked into the internet are BOGUS or officially BLOWN

did you hear before of J-Rich to the Cats, or Allen to the Celtics?
    NO!!!

that’s why we HAVE to hope KG’s here by the end of the week…

  50. Gravatar Icon 50 BEC

Why are you people losing hope? Because of some stupid BSpn report? What has happened with every single one of these so called “sources” of upcoming trades, these rumors? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. No “sources” seem to have info on actual trades that went down i.e. allen and randolph trades.

And plus this article just says things we already know, taylors BS’ing on wanting to keep KG and that they really want to trade KG. We already know theyre talking to a bunch of teams to trade him, NOTHING new. BSPN is just trying to make old new look new.

If this trade was really going to happen it wouldve have happened already. Think about it, on draft day at the end of june they got an old allen for fifth pick (stupid move btw), which says they want to win now in the weak east, and they know allen just isnt enough. Instantly having allen they would simultaneously pitched for KG with al jeff as bait, so they could win now. If this was true this trade wouldve have gone down already, no ones trading players they just drafted so theres no reason to wait so long, just Al jeff fillers and picks. Mchale/Taylor already know ALL there options since post draft day, nothing new has come up, and its up to them to pull the trigger. In this case if this was what they thought was the best they wouldve done the trade already weeks ago.
But seeing as theyre waiting to trade KG, the only real logical thing that seems to be going on is KG to the Lakers because they want Crit and we cant trade him till Aug 3 and thats why theres no KG trade yet. Atleast thats just what I think.

  51. Gravatar Icon 51 DeepFrost

Guys, I look at it like this. If we get KG we would lose Bynum and Odom and probably Critt. Yes we would be exciting to watch, but still not a title contender. We’re here to win titles not be the Sacramento Kings of the early decade. I say we focus our attention on getting Ron Artest and next year, when KG’s contract expires and he opts out we pick him up. That way we would keep Odom Bynum and Critt, be set for championships in the present, and still have our long term investments (Bynum, Critt, farmar)I’m confident everything will fall in place.

    Keep the faith.

  62. Gravatar Icon 62 fatty

Why now and not on draft day?

    Its the same deal.

Because of a change of heart on KG.

Why would KG change his mind. He wanted to be in a warm climate, a contender, etc…?

Its being reported, Boston is now willing to give KG an extention of 125 mil for 5 years. That’s a total of 175 mil over 7 years!!!! 25 mil a year avg. He will be 38 when the contract is over.

Didn’t Ainge learn anything from the Shaq/Miami contract?

So in the end, its all about “show me the money”!!!! And KG’s desire to have lots of it.

Next post: The trade pieces and why this is not a good deal for either team.

  63. Gravatar Icon 63 mikedeezy2k8

why a change of heart? cuz the celtics now have ray allen, ray allen plus paul peirce and kg, looks more appealing than what he has on the t wolves.

  64. Gravatar Icon 64 lafanfromindiana

According to FoxSports website this morning….KG to Boston is going to be a finalized deal within the next 48 hrs.

If Mchale ends up getting fired or leaves the Wolves….How bad would it look if he got a job working along with Ainge in Boston after this trade is done? Thats ALMOST as bad as the ref scandal.

  65. Gravatar Icon 65 fatty

Sota’s take on the proposed deal. Not as solid as Fox’s take.

    http://www.twincities.com/allheadlines/ci_6499218?nclick_check=1

As Mitch said, “the deal is not done until the deal is done”

We still have some hope. But I must admit, its becoming very little.

  66. Gravatar Icon 66 Justin M.

I hope this is true. If it is, I’m glad this whole KG mess is finally done. Now we can concentrate on becoming a championship team again. Like some of you said already if we get JO without loosing Odom then its going to be the Celtics and Lakers in the Finals and the rivalry will be born again. Lakers will have the upper hand of course, after all, we do have the best player on the planet, but it will be a must see NBA finals and we will all “witness” what NBA finals are suppose to be like. I’m happy for KG to. If he’s in Boston he has a 95% chance of making the Finals and if the Lakers get JO without loosing Odom then we have a 95% chance of making the Finals.

  67. Gravatar Icon 67 nba analyst

Come on now….you have to admit that the Celtics are offering a lot better package for KG than the Lakers have alledgedly offered. The Ratliff expiring contract is absolutely huge and you get a guy like Jefferson, who is underrated. Compare that to the alleged Laker offer of Odom (who is who he is at this point in his career and isn’t going to get any better) and a risk like Bynum (while the Buss family loves him, it appears the rest of the league isn’t nearly as high on him).

Still, while the Celtics are offering the better package, I still don’t do the deal if I am in the Wolves’ shoes. It seems so light for a guy like Garnett. If this deal goes down, there has to be more to it than Jefferson and Ratliff….

  68. Gravatar Icon 68 fatty

What the bloggers from Boston are saying.

Our team and future are gutted.

Why are they saying this? They are getting KG, Allen, and Pierce, right?

    1. KG’s salary burden. 175 mil for 7 years. How can they afford to build a team around him.

    2. There future was traded away. Al Jefferson, there best prospect and Rondo gone. Plus picks.

    3. Allen is iffy. Coming off knee surgery and 32. Not a good combo. They lost Wally and West, plus a #5 to get him.

    4. Pierce is coming off surgery and is 30.

    5. 3 of them will cost 60 mil/year. This team will go way over cap and be locked into these three for years.

    6. Who will play defense? ALL of there defenders are gone. Looks like only KG can play D now.

    7. Some are saying Ainge is brilliant. Many are saying, the team is ruined with no hope of ever recovering.

They know there team better than me. They are happy to get KG, but feel this was not a good deal and an act of desperation by Ainge. The team has been gutted, locked in for years to excessive salaries, with no way to improve. “Be careful for what you wish for” applies here and is a warning to us to not make a move out of desperation. Make a move, but at least be smart about it.

  69. Gravatar Icon 69 fatty

    Shaq vs KG

Shaq to Miami. Say’s, I will take less, extend my contract for 20 mil x 5 years, so we can build a contender.

KG to Boston. No way, I won’t play for you. Then says later, give me more money, an extention for 25 mil x 5 years and I will play.

With Kg, its all about money. Boston will not be a contender, even in the weak east. And be cash strapped to build one, because of KG’s greed.

  70. Gravatar Icon 70 nba analyst

Fatty….great take…..”Be careful of what you wish for”. On a blog that has its share of people who scream to “do something” just for the sake of doing something to placate Kobe, the deal you don’t make might be the best deal of all.

My advice to the suits with the Lakers is this. Stand up to your superstar. He needs to realize that the world does not revolve around him (hard to do since they have fed this culture, but at some point, it has to end). If Kobe threatens to opt out. tell him to go ahead and advise him that there will be no sign and trade deals. There won’t be many teams able to sign him to a mega deal he would otherwise deserve due to salary cap provisions. Call his bluff.

The rubber has to hit the road this season on Bynum. It has be determined whether he is a budding superstar or not.

That’s more than enough to become a 1st-3rd seed in the west. Let’s go for JO and Webber and thats it. If we don’t get either of them we’ll still a be solid 4th or 5th seed team.

  73. Gravatar Icon 73 fatty

    NBA analyst

    Kobe can opt out, but….

for all the reasons you said he won’t. The teams that can afford him will all be losers and the good ones can only offer MLE deals.

By that time, the Lakers will have improved. Maybe some of our guys will have a breakout year, and we will be better than anticipated. Our FO is not the best, but we are improving, players are maturing, and with a few less injuries, we might surprise some people in the playoffs.

One more rant. Dr Buss is not stupid. He is a fan like us and enjoys a winning team as much as we do. His desire, and he has proven it many times is to build contending teams. The Shaq fiasco derailed us for a while. Last years injuries hurt and slowed our growth. Kobe just needs to show a little patience, let the plan grow, and let it come to fruition. He will find it much more satisfying in the end to know he was part of a an earlier contender, and then rebuilt another contending team.

  74. Gravatar Icon 74 fatty

    From realgm.com

“There are serious discussions in place,” said Miller this morning.

When asked about the option as well as Garnett’s willingness to play in Boston, Miller added: “Part of the discussion that is taking place is addressing those issues as well as others to see if the destination makes sense for all parties. Everything is part of the overall picture as to how to bring this to a conclusion or go in a different direction.”

It doesn’t look good, but as Mitch says “the deal is not done, until the deal is done”

According to Boston, they won’t make the deal unless KG agrees to an extention. The trade in principle is done, but it all hinges on this. Will KG agree? That is not decided according to agent Miller. Interestingly, he opens the door for others to come in play. Ainge said the same thing this AM. “Its between us a few others.” The important thing is, “sota” is going to move KG somewhere, if Boston can’t come to terms with KG.

Boston has won the first round. Obviously, KG is close to accepting Boston’s extention offer, according to Miller. It looks like Boston gave KG a blank check to fill out with KG’s terms. Is it still enough to land KG?

  75. Gravatar Icon 75 lakerfan81

I don’t understand this deal. Can Boston trade 4 players for 1 and still have the league minimum of 13 contracts?

If they traded, Ratliff, Green, Telfair, Jefferson ( picks) for Garnett that only leaves then 10 players under contract and a total salary just over the luxury tax. So they would still have to sign 3 more players and basically be paying twice for them because of the luxury tax.

Besides that they would have 54.4M tied up in 3 contracts this year. that goes up to 59.5M next year. If KG signs an extension worth the same amount as he is making now then in 2009/2010 they would have 62.6M in 3 contracts. Thats a lot of money for 3 player who will be 33, 35 and 34. Better hope the owners have a really deep pocket book. And you better hope none of those aging players get injured. 32 is a common age for shooters to start deteriorating so they also better hope Allen does
