TwinCities: Ainge - No Garnett deal yet

Another report on Ainge not confirming the deal and going against the AP report that this is indeed a “done deal” being agreed upon…

aingehasaplan.jpgTwinCities: Boston Celtics executive Danny Ainge refuted a report Monday afternoon that his team had reached an agreement in principal to acquire Timberwolves all-star Kevin Garnett.

The Associated Press, citing an unnamed Boston official, reported that the Celtics who could be traded to the Wolves are Al Jefferson, Sebastian Telfair, Gerald Green and Theo Ratliff in addition to at least one future draft pick. But Ainge said no deal is in place.

“They can speculate all they want,” Ainge told the Pioneer Press.

The Boston Globe also cited an unnamed Celtics official in reporting that a deal was in place. The Wolves would receive Jefferson, Green, Ratliff, Telfair, Ryan Gomes and two future first-round picks, according to the Globe.

The trade might not be officially announced tonight because of the number of contracts involved and some necessary reworking of Garnett’s contract, the Globe reported.

Ainge did say earlier in the day that he is pursuing Garnett. And Garnett is more open to a trade than he’s been in the past, his agent said.

Report: Ainge will not confirm Garnett deal

Well now there is a report Ainge will not confirm the deal as being “done,” as the numerous AP media outlets report…

Yahoo Sports: It was reported earlier Monday that the Celtics would send forward Al Jefferson, swingman Gerald Green, point guard Sebastian Telfair, the expiring contract of center Theo Ratliff and at least one future first-round pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves for one of the league’s biggest superstars.

But Ainge would not confirm the deal.

“(The reports) can speculate all they want,” he said to the newspaper. “I can confirm we are talking, sure. We’re in discussions with (Garnett).”

While I still feel that KG will be eventually headed to the Celtics, I found this part interesting:

“I’m sure we’re one of a few teams that are in discussions with the Timberwolves,” Ainge said.

Lakers sign Coby Karl

The Lakers DID made a move today… Coby, not Kevin…

InsideSocal.com: While the Boston Celtics appear on the verge of acquiring Kevin Garnett for a package headlined by Al Jefferson — it seems that Garnett has changed his mind about playing in Boston…we don’t know superstars who changes their mind frequently, do we? — the Lakers announced the signing of…Coby Karl.

It’s something that has been in the works for quite some time. Karl, a 6-foot-5 guard, played on the Lakers’ summer league team and average 12.2 points. He had a solid career at Boise State and you might remember that Karl had cancerous lymph nodes removed from this throat this year.

ESPN: All the KG math that’s fit to print

This is a great article from ESPN’s Mark Stein. He goes into the details on the salary cap issues involved in making a trade work for KG. Also mentioned in the article, is the salary cap guru and our own dear friend, Larry Coon; who helped Stein with the aspects on the salary cap in his article!

ESPN: As we inch closer to a real, live Kevin Garnett trade, you will hear and read more about the trade bonus in Garnett’s contract — more commonly known as a trade kicker — and how it has impact on Minnesota’s forthcoming deal with Boston.

The following four-step breakdown dissects the trade-kicker specifics involved here and some of the other math variables tied to this megadeal.

But first some background: A good deal of this knowledge comes from ESPN.com capologist/Trade Machine maestro Nick Silva and our dear friend Larry Coon. Professor Coon not only has a handy knack for distilling salary-cap complexities into understandable English while running one of the best Web sites known to man — his NBA Salary Cap FAQ — but also is a former student and teacher at the prestigious Titan Tech … which is more commonly known as Cal State Fullerton.

Kevin Garnett to Boston - “DONE DEAL?”

KG to Boston. ‘Nuff said. Has the “pipe” has officially broken?

burst-pipe.jpgStar Tribune: Kevin Garnett’s long tenure with the Timberwolves appears to be over.

The Boston Celtics were close to completing a deal for the Timberwolves’ All-Star forward this afternoon. The Associated Press quoted an unnamed Celtics official saying a deal was imminent, but not yet complete. The AP also said a conference call announcing the deal might come later today.

Garnett is due $23 million next season and would get a 15 percent raise if he is traded, so both sides would have to work to match contracts. Garnett has been with the Wolves for 12 seasons, the longest current span that one NBA player has with his team.

The trade is likely to send forward Al Jefferson, swingman Gerald Green, point guard Sebastian Telfair, center Theo Ratliff and at least one high draft pick to Minnesota

—–

The Herald also reported the Celtics and Garnett, 31, have reached an agreement in principle on a contract extension. It appears Garnett is willing to forego the opt-out in his current deal for next summer and cast his lot with Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and the Celtics.

Ticketless

Eric Pincus of Hoopsworld writes on the current situation of the Lakers and not - at least as of now - landing Kevin Garnett; the player hailed by all Lakers fans as their savior…

HOOPSWORLD.COM: The big news of the day is heated conversations between the Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics and Andy Miller (agent for Kevin Garnett). Obviously Laker fans would be disappointed if Garnett is traded to Boston, but it appears that may be a strong possibility.

The Los Angeles Lakers have always held a small candle but had already accepted they were an unlikely destination for Garnett.

Perhaps they look at Plan B again (Jermaine O’Neal), though they still appear unwilling to move Andrew Bynum with Lamar Odom to the Indiana Pacers for the expensive and injury prone O’Neal.

While the Lakers can afford to shop players like Kwame Brown and Jordan Farmar, that may not be enough to land an impact player.

A wild rumor that the Orlando Magic would be interested in Brown, willing to send Hedo Turkoglu (and Farmar from the Lakers) to the Sacramento Kings with Artest and Keith Bogans coming to the Lakers has been declared “unfounded” by a source close to one of the teams.

It’s certainly an interesting idea but at this point remains unrealistic.

Another rumor making the paces is that the Lakers are one of the teams chasing Juan Carlos Navarro whose draft rights are still owned by the Washington Wizards. While it’s possible to come up with a trade scenario that might appeal to the Wizards, there’s the matter of how much money the Lakers can pay Navarro.

Celtics agree to acquire Garnett for four players, draft pick

Their is an AP article floating around claiming this trade has been agreed upon. Also, a press conference could be scheduled today to announce it. Sounds like it is just about official. Kevin Garnett to Boston.

CBS Sportsline: Kevin Garnett is leaving Minnesota after the Boston Celtics agreed to acquire the All-Star forward in a multiplayer trade with the Timberwolves, a Celtics official told the Associated Press on Monday.

Among the players who could be headed to Minnesota are forward Al Jefferson, guard Sebastian Telfair, swingman Gerald Green and center Theo Ratliff, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been completed. The official also said the Timberwolves would get at least one draft choice.

The teams still had some things to clarify with the players’ contracts, but the official said that would not keep the Celtics from acquiring Garnett, although there could be a change in the players ticketed for the Timberwolves.

There was a chance that a conference call announcing the trade would be held Monday, the official said.
