In our last challenge, most members were very eager to get rid of our young players without being concerned about the future of our team. Swapping our young and promising talents for older and more experienced players does not guaranty instant success.
It’s easy to showoff your knowledge with household names like Jermaine O’Neal, Ron Artest, Jason Kidd and C.Webb. It’s easy to build an All-Star team around
Today, Lakers are lost somewhere between their glorious past, disorientated present and uncertain future. They have the best player on the planet and don’t know what to do with him. They have surrounded him with some experienced players like Derek Fisher and Lamar Odom, as well as young talents like Andrew Bynum and Javaris Crittenton. But is that enough to build a future and appease
This challenge is about assembling a contender team to appease Kobe and have a chance to win now, and at the same time, you must add young talents to be contender in future as well. You must follow these rules to participate in this challenge…
- Your proposal has to secure the future of the franchise while appeasing Kobe.
- All trades must comply with NBA and CBA trade regulations
- Support your ideas with facts but please keep it under 60-70 words (4-5 lines)
- Do not spend more than $5-Mil in luxury taxes
- The word “FINAL” must be on top of your final proposal to be reviewed.
- Identify yourself on top of the post, for example: “This is Larry Bird at Pacers”
- Only proposals with a link to a trade machine will be accepted and reviewed. If you’re trading for an unsigned agent, it would be difficult to use the machine, just post names of your outgoing and incoming players.
- This challenge will end on September 8 and the winner will be announced 2 days later.
- You can also suggest keeping the present roster. Just post a comment and tell us why.
- Do not trade Kobe.
You may also counter those offers made by the Lakers by identifying yourself as the owner or GM of the other team on top of your posts.
Competent owners build a team to be contender now while embedding young talents in the roster to be contender in future as well. Thus, we will award the winner with the Certificate of General Manager of the Month, issued by the TheLakersNation, for the month of September.

September GM Challenge Final Result
Many people participated in our last challenge because it was easy just to drop some household names like JO, Artest, J.Kidd and C. Webb into trade machine and post a link with the results.
Don’t get me wrong, I am very grateful for your overwhelming response to our last challenge, and we received some very impressive trade proposals. The winner deserves every bit of the credit received.
But we will always ask for more and we will keep raising the bar; this is a very difficult task and even the most experienced GM’s and owners have difficulties with this mission. It will cost you many trips to references. It takes knowledge, high basketball IQ and ingenuity. And that is the reason we are giving you until September 8th to get the job done.
You have nothing to lose, its’ free and a lot fun, and most importantly it’s educating. Have Fun
We will judge your offers and roster lineup by the following criteria:
1-Securing the future of the team: 3 points
2-Having a contender team on the floor now: 3 points
3-Practicality, is your offer attractive to other team: 2 points
4-Simplicity, number of teams and players involved: 2 Points
Total points available points for each offer: 10 points
Judges on this challenge are:
DBricks
JonInJapan
Rpoc
Cyrus
We may add one more judge later.
soo. . don’t all answer at once now
Am sure people will submit their stuff tomorrow.
ok
here is my scenario
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=&teams=&te=&cash=30:13~13:30
ok, our lineup would look like this
DFish/jordan farmar/javaris crittenton
kobe bryant/mo evans/sasha
luke walton/vladimir radmonivic/ mo evans
lamar odom/ronny turiaf/ brian cook
kwame brown/ andrew bynum/ chris mihm
this means we have two sides
now: we have the best player in the world in kobe bryant, enough to get any team into the playoffs, dfish, and point guard who can make the open shot, and can shut down a point guard on defense, lamar odom, a person who when hot can make a three pointer in rythym, post it up, and deadly when he drives to the basket.
future: heading off the future, andrew bynum, and back to the basket center, who is the a developing center who is learning hook shots, when he masters the sky hook, and does it in a game, every coach in the nba will shoot themselves, ronny turiaf, he is the wild card, he can make the mid range shot, post up, plus has good hands, jordan farmar, this is our kid, he is a classic point guard, with good pass skills, he drives to the basket and gives you a tear drop, and can make the three, mo evans, and athletic beast, who can make the three pointer, do a fall away post shot, and give the athletic play, javaris crittenton, a player with a baron davis body and post up, with the shooting touch of chauncy billups, he is a drive first point guard, who makes the open shot, and has run the triangle before.
as you see, this is a very simple trade, and gives us a good mix of future and now.

as my good friend carlos mencia would say “D D D”
I say we do this trade:
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=981~1031~3002~2421~2753~25~3000&teams=23~30~23~30~13~13~13&te=&cash=30:13
If we do this trade, we get potential point guards in Crittenton & Felton, sky high potential in Bynum, and a multi-talented guy in a energized Turiaf, along with defensive talent in Artest and a 3rd scoring option. Bobcats get a very athletic, able to shoot the 3, can play 1 0n 1 D Mo Evans, a spot up shooter in Vujacic, and cash from the Lakers. While we get Artest & Felton, we have to pay the price by giving up Kwame, Farmar & a 1st round pick. But I still belive this is the “Trade of the Present & Future”!
Hey Mitch (lakers724)
This is PJ.
Your killing me Mitch. I need guards who can run the triangle and you want to trade Farmar and Sasha. That leaves me Fish with the only one with any experience. If Fish’s family needs him for any length of time the Lakers would be in trouble.
By the way, nice tan. I wished you spent as much time working on the Lakers, as you did on your getting a tan this summer.
One more hint,
Marc Gasol and Sun Yue, Lakers’ unsigned draft picks, could be considered as well; they are not signed; so you may sign them or trade the rights to other teams.
Here is some stats on Marc Gasol

Pool of all young talents, signed and unsigned.
I never thought the day would come where the fans would have to play the role of Laker management and the Lakers management would play the role of the fans ( just sitting idle and waiting for the season to start)!!!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you guys see Kobe shut down Barbosa? On a team where everyone is a star, Kobe stands alone as a Superstar !!!
He looks like like the same eager and hungry kid that we saw when he came into the league.
I hope that Dr. Buss has a TV in his mansion and has the opportunity to see what it would feel like if Kobe played for another team.
Im gonna really shake things up!!!
Ok,Lakers send Kobe, Cook, Farmhar, Sasha to the Suns.
The Suns send Marion, Barbosa, Bell, Banks, and that 2008 first round lottery pick that the suns got from Atlanta to the Lakers.
Lakers send Bynum, Kwame, Luke, Vlad, and that 2008 1st round pick they got from Suns.
Now lets analyze this… The lakers would appease Kobe by sending him to a contending team that is more like his style of play. They also include proven shooters in Sasha and Cook who will thrive under Nash, and a good scrappy point guard in Farmhar who will benefit from playing with Nash. The Suns will take this trade in a heartbeat… why… because KOBE IS A MAVS AND SPURS KILLER!!!
The Suns lineup would look like:
Nash/Farmhar
Kobe/Sasha
Grant Hill/James Jones
Diaw/Cook
Amare/fill in the blank
Of course the suns would have to find a back up center since they let Kurt thomas go. Chris Webber would love to play with this suad!!!
The Pacers lineup would look like:
Tinsley/Diener
Grainger/Marquies Daniels/Kareem Rush
Luke Walton/Vlad/Dunleavy
Ike Diogu/Troy Murphy/Jeff Foster
Bynum/Kwame
Plus they will have the 1st round pick that the Suns got from Atlanta, the Lakers got from the Suns, and now to Indiana. The kicker is Kwame’s 9mil. contract is up next year and they have that 1st round lottery pick for next year. They get a center in Bynum who will dominate in the east and and all they gave up was Oneal!!! Bird will break his back to get this deal done!!!
The Lakers lineup will look like:
Fisher/Critt/Banks
Bell/Barbosa
Marion/Mo Evans
Odom/Turiaf
Oneal/Mihm
Our defense will be stiffling!!! You have three point shooters in Fish, Bell, Barbosa, Marion, Critt. Odom can stay in the paint where he likes it. You have Barbosa, Mo, Critt, Turiaf, Mihm coming off the bench, which gives us the best bench in the leaugue by far!!! Oh… did I forget to mention we would have Oneal in the middle giving us 20/10 every night plus block shots and good defense!!! This would make us the favorite to be championship contenders for the next 6 years!!!
The trades were successful on http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/trademachine
but it would allow me to add the Lottery pick and Walton due to his new contract. Once the season starts that would work. Mitch would wake up and fall off his log for this trade.
All three teams improved drastically and the league would benefit greatly from this excitment!!!
Excuse the error when I forgot to say that we were sending our players to the Pacers for Oneal.
Lakaluva,
Are you somehow related to Mitch or Dr. Buss?
Trade Kobe? Really???
your trade sounds very similar to the Shaq trade we had three years ago, which ended up being Shaq for Kwame and Odom.
Asemble a team to appease Kobe and have him confident they can win now! Im preety sure that wouldnt mean sending him to the suns. The goal of this challenge is to give the LAKERS a sufficent make-over to appease Kobe and both make since for the future? Maybe Im wrong but I believe the jist fo the challenge is to make the Lakers better with Kobe as the main piece?
Im gonna really shake things up!!!

wait, you are trading kobe for barbosa here? Marion, Bell, Banks are players that won’t get it done, banks just can’t play, bell just is as well as i know a one dimensional player, and marion, not really good at anything really. that leaves us with barbosa, if you knew anything about basketball, you would know that kobe for those few players, you must literally, I mean literally be crazy, how much crack have you been smoking?
ok this is my deal

Lakers would get yi along as charlie at the pf spot the lakers would do this trade because lakers have yi and charlie how are both youg but good.
Lakers send: shasa and farmer and brown.
bucks send: Yi and simmons and charlie villuevia
Lakers Lineup:
Dfish/java
Kobe/mo evans/coby karl
Lo/bobby simmons/luke walton/cook
Carlie villuevia/Turiaf/rodamvic
bynum/Yi/Mihmm
That your line up which has so much deep to help the lakers win a championship
Milwakee would take this deal because yi doesnt want to play with them so therefore they get kwamebrown a expired contract get a young farmer and the we take on simmons contract and they get shasa a expiring contract.
This in my heart make the lakers good. so say we play are rival suns will have nash on dfish, bell on kobe, marion on Lo/diaw on charlie/amare on yi or bynum We win the matchup because of kobe Lo and charlie. What your guys opion?
jk9999990,
We can’t read the “realGM” link, it comes up as an error, please try to post it again. Thanks
hey cyrus i put it as espn trade machine now
Trading Kobe will disqualify you. The objective is to APPEASE and keep Kobe, not to trade him.
i not trading kobe
jk9999990,
Thanks, you’ve posted a valid proposal. It will be reviewed.
cyrus what you think about my trade?

FINAL
My name is Edmond and im a DIE HARD Laker fan from Simi Valley, CA.
Here’s the best deal which should go down because it appeases kobe, makes us a championship contender and has a nice future star in it. This would work if our GM had atleast half a brain and I feel the teams in the deal would accept it.
3 way trade
Lakers send- Andrew Bynum, Vlad Radmonovic, and Cash to the Pacers
Pacers send- Jermaine O’Neal to the Lakers
Lakers send- Jordan Farmar, Kwame Brown, 08′ 1st rounder to the Bucks
Milwaukee send- Yi Jianlian to the Lakers
Milwaukee send- Bobby Simmons to the Pacers
Therefor:
Lakers Acquire- Yi Jianlian Jermaine O’Neal
Pacers Acquire- Bobby Simmons Andrew Bynum Vlad Radmonovic Cash
Milwaukee Acquire- Jordan Farmar Kwame Brown 08′ 1st rounder

I knew the challenge would pick up on Monday.
hey nugget when do you decide a winner?
“This challenge will end on September 8 and the winner will be announced 2 days later.”
k peeps here we go
#1 http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=1022~3214~981~2748~1031~3002~1016~2421~3206~615&teams=11~13~15~11~11~15~11~11~11~13&te=&cash=15:13
in order for this to work JO needs to demand a trade to LA which he would if kobe would just call his ass, geeze.
#2
sign c webb and sasha pavlovic using the vets minimum and 5 mill of luxury tax. THey’d be drawn to all this new added talent and want to sign.
#3
trade cook for 1st round picks to a bad team such as charlotte or memphis who need good shooters.
Lineup:
fish/critt/etc
kobe/pavlovic
odom/luke
cwebb/yi/etc
JO/mihm/etc
Kobe is happy b/c of JO and veteran leadership in cwebb and we got rid of kwame. AND the future is bright w/ yi, pav, critt, ronny, etc, plus a grip of picks.
future lineup:
critt
idk (no one can replace kobe)
1st round pick
ronny
Yi
mail me the certificate
hey luke idaina not trading jo
yea i kno but if he demands a trade and sits out untill they give it to him theyre bound to do it. thats y i said it depends on him asking to come here for it to work.
oh okay luke
I appreciate your participation but please identify the person made the offer (To), and identify yourself countering the offer (From).Like this sample:

SAMPLE
To:The Lakers GM:LUUUUKE
From:The Pacers GM:jk9999990
You offer is unacceptable, but I could do this for you…..END OF SAMPLE

And don’t just turn down the offer, that is easy. Tell your counter part why you don’t like his offer, Try to negotiate and give them some other options. We would like to see some intelligent discussions rather than just shooting down the offer and disappear. Thanks
I like my deal by far :). Most logical and every team benefits the players that I chose to bring to LA want to be here by far.

hey cryus i wasnt mad at luke i really do like his deal but i just dont think indiana will trade JO
How to calculate the salary of an unsigned player:
For example; Yi Lianjian:
Yi has not been signed as of now and no salary has been determined for Yi. If you’re trading for YI, calculate his salary with $2.75Mil. This is how I calculated that:
5th draft pick; Jeff Green (Seattle)- $3.06Mil
7th draft pick; Corey Brewer (Minnesota)- $2.5Mil
Yi salary, as 6th draft pick, would be the average between 5 and 7 = $2.75 Mil
You can’t use the trade machine for that, just post the the outgoing and incoming players. Thanks
Actually…this is my trade:

So in this trade, Bobcats get a spot up shooter, Lakers 1st round pick in 09 and cash. Kings get a very athletic Mo Evans, young Kwame Brown, and the Lakers 1st round pick in 08. The Lakers get Felton, whom in the future, with the experience of the Triangle, could be a very great facilitator for the Lakers to help Farmar, Bynum & Turiaf in the future. Artest to help them now and get the Lakers to appease Kobe, and Douby to balance out the salaries!

wishful thinking bra; wishful thinking, aye gef em bra?
Hey Cyrus… just one question about the challenge.
Can I send more than 1 proposal, or just 1
Billy Kupchak,
I agree with you, it’s kind of wishful thinking. However, it would be smarter to support your claim with some facts; this is how I would put it:
“Pacers would never accept 4 year contract of Vladimir Radmanovic with $25-Mil remaining and Bobby Simmons 3 years contract at $28-Mil.”
You can add other facts such as player’s stats to your claim as well. Thanks
people just remember to put FINAL on the top once the final day comes otherwise your trade, however amazing, doesn’t qualify
other than that, keep up the good work
Final Draft:
Mr. Buss,
I recently spoke with the owner of Milwaukee and they wanna trade their first round pick Yi Jianlan. They wanna make a blockbuster trade that also includes injury prone Charlie Villanueva and Bobby Simmons. Keep in mind that Charlie V. and Bobby Simmons when healthy are really solid basketball players. I am going to do this trade because it will help us now and also pretty much lock us up in the future. It will also keep your “son” Kobe happy and also have the Staples Center seats filled with the Chinese population because of Yi. Here’s the breakdown
Bucks will get: Kwame Brown and Radmanovic
Kings will get: Bobby Simmons and Jordna Farmar
Lakers will get: Yi Jianlian, Ron Artest, Charlie Villanueva and a filler Quincy Douby.
This will make us a contender for years to come and possibly win a championship.

LA All The Way,
I am sorry being late answering your question. You can post as many proposals as you wish but we will review your last post.
But you can make make several proposals in one post and we will review them as ONE combined proposal.
Does this answer your question?
One tip for everybody,
If you use the ESPN trade machine and select a team, at bottom of the list of the players, there is section called “….Additional Assets” and below that you will see “Unsigned Draft Picks” with a [+] next to it, just click on that [+] and it will show you the unsigned players.

This is PJ. Actually, I don’t count around here. I’m just the coach of the Lakers, not even a judge of the GM challenge. But hey, thanks for leaving me Farmar.
So was I good on my trade PJ (or Fatty, it’s kind of hard to tell which!)?
Fatty,
“I don’t count around here….. not even a judge of the GM challenge.”
You know you’re always welcome to be a judge on any of these challenges and you were the first person I asked to be a judge on this one and you decided to sit this one out. There are not many people around with your BBL IQ and knowledge.
You have raised the basketball IQ on this website with your great articles and smart comments. Please don’t say that again “I don’t count around here.” not even as a joke. You count as a valuable and knowledgeable member of this blog. And we truly count on you my friend.
okay to appease kobe okay first u do jeanie buss u marry her then
be good friends with jimmy and be a suck up to jerry buss then once theres a good vibe around u request to be GM

This deal won’t win, because its complicated and won’t make Lakers a contender for this upcoming season. But it worked on the trade machine. Woot!

Clippers get:
- Antawn Jamison (Need a PF to replace Brand)
- Dan Gadzuric & Jordan Farmar (Keeps the LA Clipper fans happy by seeing UCLA alumni)
- Vladimir Radmonovic (Old Clipper alumni to replace Thomas)
- Sasha Vujacic (young prospect who needs to hit the gym more often)
Wizards get:
- Sam Cassell & Kwame Brown (Equivalent expiring contract value to Jamison. Kwame is Wizard alumnus)
- Brian Cook (Younger, cheaper PF that scores and doesn’t play defense)
Bucks get:
- Tim Thomas (Veteran presence and Bucks alumnus)
- Al Thorton (Not the #6 pick, but better than nothing if Yi doesn’t get signed or traded)
Lakers get:
- Elton Brand (Knows the triangle, blocks, rebounds, scores)
- Yi Jianlian (An unknown. Probably a Chinese version of Brian Cook; wants to only score and not play D. Satisfies Plan D discussions)
- Interesting 2008-2009 season
that trade is sooooo dumb why would washington take kwame back
Plan D is dead. Back to the drawing board.
ATTENTION ALL PARTICIPANTS,
Yi Lianjian signed with the Bucks unexpectedly and the prospect of getting Yi is almost zero, I’m sorry, but those who used Yi as their trade piece should go back and revise their proposals to get better grades. If you leave Yi in your proposal you would lose full 2 points given to “practicality” of the proposed trade, and if you are using a multi-team, multi-player trade to get Yi, it will cost you points in “simplicity ” as well.
You have plenty of time to change your trade, here is the list of 2007 draft to look for other players.
http://www.nba.com/draft2007/board.html
Good Luck and sorry about the inconvenience.

Some of the best NBA players are from Europe: Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker, Pao Gasol and many others.
This is very easy i should win this challenge. It’s as simple as trading LO and Bynum for JO.That will uppease Kobe.Especialy knowing that they got rid of that cry baby Bynum and got value in return i dont know why they did’nt pick up Kid it would have been very interesting to see Kid VS Nash in the playoff’s.Thank’s Mitch you blew it!!!
Cyrus,
Now I’m the one late here!
Thanks for the answer.
I’m still working on my proposal here. The Yi sign with the Bucks broke some of my ideas, but soon I’ll post something to the challenge!
Peace…
Everyone, it’s final I won this challenge!!!
Ship LO and Bynum out for JO NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOWNOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW
Did i say NOW??? before JO is traded to some other team “DO SOMETHIMG AND DO IT NOW”
JERMAIN O’NEAL TO THE LAKERS NOW!!!
MILO,
We got the idea and we appreciate your enthusiasm to get JO. But please stop posting the same thing over and over again. If you want to win, first you have to participate, post a trade machine link and support your proposal with some facts. Than Judges will decide who the winner is. Thanks

Actually…this is my trade:
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=981~1998~1031~2753~25~3000&teams=23~30~23~13~13~13&te=&cash=30:13
This’ll be my final trade proposal for sure!
So we’ll have a roster of this:
Fisher-PG/Felton/Farmar/Vujacic/
Kobe-SG/Mo Evans/Coby Karl/
Artest-SF/Walton/Radman/
Odom-PF/Turiaf/
Mihm-C/Bynum/
cyrus, thank’s for the envitation to participate in the challenge, but the fact of the matter is that i realy dont have the smarts to do so.God know’s i would make a horrible GM.And let me apologize for posting the same thing over and over again im just doing that to vent some of the frustration that i have acumulated over the summer, but i still think that just geting JO would uppease Kobe.

MILO,
I have deep understanding for your frustration. Front office incompetency is destroying this once glamorous ball club. The ownership transition from Jerry Buss, one of the most admired sports franchise owners, to his hypocritical and narcissistic son, Jimmy Buss, is crushing our beloved Lakers.
Jerry West saw this coming and left, he was too proud to be a puppet of Jimmy Buss. After Jerry West departure, Jimmy and his puppet, Mitch Kupchak dismantled the contender and elite Lakers piece by piece and reduced it to what we see today. And what we see is truly frustrating.
Also, do not underestimate yourself, nobody expect you to have the skills of a GM, you’re a fan and for fan you have sufficient knowledge. This challenge is designed to raise the basketball IQ by forcing you to lookup references, check players stats, get to know many young talents.
We are not expecting participants to perform magical trades and save our team. Our intentions are to encourage our members to build knowledge and educate themselves. You’re here because you’re a fan and you enjoy discussing basketball and Lakers and it would be much more fun to talk with knowledge which gives more confidence.
FINAL
Mitch here, I think for some reason my brain just started working. *puts down his cupcake*
Kings decided to cave after I convinced them Artest was a Michael Vick waiting to happen, they traded him to us for young talent and 3 point effectiveness.
I caved in and tossed Bynum With Odom to the Pacers. I threw in Brown because his cake tossing criminal nature I figured would get Artest too riled up to function
right and we need him to atleast try to attempt to act like he is remotely focusing. Also it helped sweeten the deal and the numbers to snag Granger.
They got what they wanted, and we are contenders with potential turning into effectiveness on our horizon. I believe Java will be very very good in the next few
years. Granger is only going to get better and he has a long and bright career infront of him. I think we could use the option to play some run and gun small ball,
and if anyone gets injured or anything gets funky we can always sign our draft pick Marc Gasol and move things around abit. Martin isn’t old..and he doesn’t
suck…at all
(good thing they knew that he was gonna bail on them as soon as his contract expired) Some of that young talent’s contracts are expiring, but
nobody wants to leave a championship team
As much as I hate to see Bynum or Odom go….
The 2007-2008 Roster is looking to start like this…
PG Fisher, Java, Karl
SG Bryant, Martin, Vujacic
SF Artest, Walton, Evans
PF Oneal, Turner, Granger
C Mihm, Turiaf,
Plenty of ways to move things around or adjust later if any freak incidents prevent this exact lineup.
Also I sent Kobe a Christmas Card, and yes I am aware that Fall is not even upon us.
I’m sure in a few years my kids will be wearing Bynum Jerseys…but secretly, under my suite…I wear a Bryant jersey that I just cant seem to find the heart
to take off..unless its 5-8 years from now and getting replaced by a jersey that reads Crittenton…
On a side note, I have been slipping Prozac into Artest’s Cambells Chunky Soup. Don’t tell nobody.
*mind suddenly returns to normal and I sink back into my comfort zone taking my bib and magic rattle with me into the ever present puddle of drool and excrement that
moats its way around my office high chair*

Yeesh I hate jumping into character as Mitch Kuppycake… I always feel dirty afterward.
Shower Time!
