Fatty: Sorry, I’m late with the take. It was Fatty’s 31st anniversary last night. Which leaves me only a few minutes this AM to put together the preview.
If this was last year.
Last year the Lakers would get us all excited by competing well with some of the best, then only to stink up the place, in losing to lousy teams. Had to be the most frustrated thing to watch, don’t you think? New Orleans is not lousy, but they’re not the Suns or Utah either.
This is the game that may show us how much we have improved from last year to this year. Can we get up for the game? Will this squad display the workman like attitude missing from the previous season?
As Lakers Fans, we don’t ask for much. We are extremely easy to please. We are like the little kid who’s happy with a cardboard box to play with, that doesn’t need the expensive toys. All we want and ask from our Lakers is to play hard, hustle, and spice it up with a few dunks, a few blocks, and a few great passes. We’ll take the occasional loss, as long as we have the effort.
I think this time we will see the new and improved Lakers. And why the new found optimism? Look no further than Derek Fisher. He’s not the Lakers captain. He’s more like the Lakers Foreman or lead man. A tough union guy, who doesn’t come to play, he comes to work. He gets his satisfaction not from scoring, but from the satisfaction of a job well done. Fish won’t let his crew goof off. He’s there to win.

New Orleans - Our good friend Byron Scott leads his team into LA. Pretty much the same team as last year, except they are healthy and 3 - 0. They were the Big Easy last year. The not so easy this year.

Chris Paul vs. The Smushless Lakers
Tyson Chandler vs. Andrew Bynum: Who schools who? Hornets lack depth at the center position. They can’t afford fouls. Chandler the kid from Domingez goes against the kid from the Staples.
David West vs. Ronny: West is a premier forward in the NBA. Ronny gets another test. I say he passes it.
Who’s Hot? For the Hornets, nobody.
Who’s Not? Peja was 1-10. West missed his first 8 shots against Denver. Yet, they still managed to win at Denver. And why? Byron had them coming to work and playing some scrappy D.

I think the Key will be rebounding. If Turiaf, Bynum and Kwame can dominate the glass like they did against the jazz than this should be a win. Also some defense on CP3 would help.
Great preview. I do believe what Fisher is to this team equates to us reaching that next level. Kobe has someone to let be the floor general. Kobe is playing - in my opinion - some of the best ball of his career because of Fisher’s presence alone. He can lead by example and let Fisher crack the whip on these guys… the Lakers looks extremely disciplined this year! That being said, like you said, we need to take control of the “scrub” teams, although the Hornets don’t fall in that category, they aren’t up there with the Jazz or Suns either.

Fatty do you ever predict a Laker loss? This game will be a perfect test for our team. If you remember the start of last season they played with the same energy and fire for the first two games, one of which was a nice beatdown of the suns. Then Kobe came back and the energy only came and went until injuries hit and it was all downhill. Can they continue to bring the defensive intensity tonight and in the next few weeks as they transition Lamar back into the lineup? I believe they can.

How many games did we lose last year to weaker teams? A lot. With the tough West, these type of games take on even more. 50 plus wins for the Lakers means nothing except that we are a contender. Seeding, I don’t feel means much either. Ask PHX and Dallas how far the seeding got them?

a lot of fans here have a lot of confidence in their team which is a good thing. at the same time, we’re very realistic and i think LA can take down the Hornets. Fatty, its your job to get us excited about the game? What a great job, how much does that pay per hour? I agree with what you had to say about winning to teams that are considered less than elite. However if we got home court advantage in round 1 of the playoffs (number 4 seed) that would be a significant step for the Lakers this season. That would mean they played with consistency for the better half of a 82 game season which would be a major accomplishment considering the drama that has been swirling around the team the past 6 months. PHX and Dallas had championship expectations last year so anything less is a disappointment. We need to be realistic and set different goals for this team. But you are right it does come down ultimately to what goes down in the playoffs, dont discount the regular season though, they do play it for a reason.
I’m hoping they’d win. It just sucks betting against your own team. Either way, you’ll lose.
