Kidd Rebuffed On Extension — Should Lakers go after him?

With the emergence of Jordan Farmar and the consistent shooting of D-Fish, with Critt being sheltered in the background, do you pursue the Nets future hall of famer? Do you go with a Kid or a Kidd?

Star Ledger: As it turns out, Jason Kidd wasn’t plotting an exit strategy at all when he had his rant in Salt Lake City 13 days ago.

In effect, he was trying to form a more lasting union.

The Nets had turned down Kidd’s appeal for a contract extension just days before he made his bleak assertion about the team’s future, according to three people close to the point guard who requested anonymity so as not to damage his relationship with the team.

The 13th-year pro, one of the great players of his generation, makes $19.7 million this season and $21.4 million next year, the final year of his deal, which makes him eligible for a one-year extension for the 2009-10 season — or a two-year extension, if he waits until this summer.

But Kidd would be 36 when that $24 million thank-you gift would kick in, so when agent Jeff Schwartz asked team president Rod Thorn to discuss it, he was told it isn’t in the cards.

We don’t have any use for him…it’d either mean sitting Fish, and trading Farmar for him (and we don’t want to do that or trading Crittenton for him and having 3 point guards on a team that can all play, and have Farmar sit…I dunno if I like it.

That ship has sailed. The Lakers should’ve done it last February when they had the chance. With that said, Kidd is killing this year and he seems to get better and better. I’d cough up Odom and a filler for Kidd.

I’m glad we didn’t give Bynum for Kidd, that would’ve been one of the most stupid trades in history.

  4. Gravatar Icon 4 ICE CREAM MAN

Why is it that when things got bad in the off season, the majority of the laker fans started to crusify Kupchek, screaming from the top of there lungs to trade Bynum for whoever? Now they all say it would of been a stupid trade or the worst trade in history instead of saying “We were wrong and the front office was right about this one”.

Well, I for one will step up and say “Good job Mitch on keeping Bynum”. The more minutes he gets the more he improves. Has anyone checked out his rankings this year. Not GREAT but not bad at all.

All we need are free agents willing to oome over and play with the second youngest team in the NBA but very experienced.

“If you build it they will come”. It’s almost built, now let’s hope they come.

Are you kidding me??? Trade Bynum for Kidd??? The Spurs still would have won the championship and the lakers would have lost Bynum.

Kidd is a great player. But the addition of Fisher and the development of Farmar and the potential of Crit. I think the Lakers is in a good situation on that position now.
We need to get rid of Lamar. We definitely need a second veteran man to help Kobe. Hopefully a really good one.

Last February when the deal was on the table, I would’ve done it. Kidd is a superstar. Not superstars become available that often. He makes the players around him better. So ”yeah,” I would’ve done the trade.

Today that would have been considered a mistake. Would you do that trade today?

LOL, hindsight is 20/20. I wouldn’t trade Bynum for Kidd, but I would trade Odom and fillers for Kidd.

Kidd just gets better with age. Gotta love it!

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 nyla

Are you serious? How is this even a question? haha

If lakers do make a trade for kid they should give up Lmar and Critt, i like farmar and fish but i think if Kid comes that means less time for farmar.

  13. Gravatar Icon 13 jermaine mciver

Going for him means we want to win NOW!! I’m down for the but can Mitch make the right deal? Chris Mihm is coming back really slow and giving up a big to make it work hurts the squard in the long run. I love Kidd’s game but at what cost?

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 E-ROC

If the Lakers trade Odom, Vlad, and Crit or Farmar for Kidd, they should promote Coby Karl, sign Stephane Lasme, and Elton Brown or Larry Turner to round out the roster.

If not none that happens, Odom should start at the 4. Maybe he’ll get his game back. That might be a big MAYBE.

Kidd is at the end of his career. We don’t know when is production will drop off or even when his body breaks down. Just before the season started he had back problems and seeing a chiro. That is a huge risk. Yes is numbers or high but it is a very short future for him and his best days are behind him which makes it a huge risk. Not to mention his huge contract. After next yr. he will be a FA who will get no more than the MLE.

I agree, the funny thing is there are alot of laker fans who would trade Kidd for Bynum today. WTF are they thinking????

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 DoDoBallz

The best team for Kidd is Chicago.Just think about it.
    YOU’LL UNDERSTAND..

  18. Gravatar Icon 18 Santa Cruz

We have to many players that can play point. We should look to invest in a forward that can bring the consistency that Odom cannot.
Odom got out played by Kirelinko the last game. A little Defense from Artest or JO would’ve stopped that swanky soviet.

  19. Gravatar Icon 19 kobe-wan kenobi

we cant afford kidd since his contract is too big…and we need someone at PF or someone like Artest who is a D beast and an all star…
so yeah AB u r right let’s get the kidd as a FA

it is not about his baby
    it is about his attitude
    watch more gamez before talking

  24. Gravatar Icon 24 kobe-wan kenobi

But the fact the kidd was trying to get an extension, you can see he wants still big money!
    probably worried about his divorce.
so we have no chance to get him even as FA
    he wont accept MLE

  25. Gravatar Icon 25 Santa Cruz

Look enilder, you can post all the videos that making LO look like an Allstar. But the fact is: he has never been an Allstar. I like LO, when he’s consistent but he doubts himself to much. We need another leader on this team and he’s supposed to be the 2nd scoring option.

I feel for the guy, he’s still not over his son’s loss but maybe he should dedicate this season TO his son. And play like the Allstar that he can become.

Let’s beat the Magic and here’s to LO getting a Triple-Double!
But if not, then LO will find himself in trading-trouble!

i have to agree with kobe-wan kenobi that video doesn’t mean {Profanity isn't allowed on theLakersNation.com -- Please go back and edit your comment. Thank you.} we never said he can’t perform he just isn’t consistent. if he had better numbers then i would consider.

  27. Gravatar Icon 27 JoeSaz

We have a PG now we have 2 good ones we need to pick up an free agent this summer and we r set 4 a championship, we need a another scorer because kobe is the only one that has shown that he can do that over and over every night

  28. Gravatar Icon 28 enilder

    LO and fillers for Kidd.

    do it mitch!

  30. Gravatar Icon 30 ricky

i think the lakers would love to have jason kidd on the roster and i am sure they are interesting in acquiring his services. however, we already have 3 point guards on this roster and they are all capable of playing consistently. because they are all good players, it would be terrible to have to trade any of them for jason kidd because kidd is already coming towards the end of his career. if the lakers should want to acquire jason kidd, i believe it would be best to sign him as a free agent.

  31. Gravatar Icon 31 kobe-wan kenobi

    ENILDER
i dont know, maybe you were paying too much attention to cheerleaders instead of game…
otherwise you would know, by now, that LO is a great inconsistent player, one day he is dominant, 2 days he does not shows up, 2 days he plays like a regular player..
that is not what we need, we need a solid 2nd star behind kobe, and he is not!!
everyone agrees on that, so i guess you did not watch carefully or u r just his wife trolling this site…

  32. Gravatar Icon 32 leo

we have enuff point guards..trade odom for artest….odom too inconsistent….

Pffthahaha!! You were putting on the sales person act for Kobe but the emo side of you gets the best of you so you fail and go ballistic everytime. Now ya bitter so linger around taking cheap shots whenever ya can.

    Pot. Kettle. Black.

  37. Gravatar Icon 37 LakersFirst (Change) (Close)

The Lakers do not need another point guard. Last year, when we were stuck with Smush and rookie Farmar then yea, I would say we need him. But now with Fisher, Farmar (much improved) Critt (who in my opinion should be moved to the 2), there is not really much need for him. The Lakers need a power forward who can score inside and gather rebounds (Bynum alone is not enough).

Also, whoever made the comment that Chicago needs Kidd brings up a good point. Chicago could use a good floor general (Heinrich is terrible and overpaid).

  38. Gravatar Icon 38 Rpoc

Tell that to them last season. They were in love with Hinrich. Now suddenly he’s trash and he’s playing like trash. Couldn’t stay on the USA team should be an indication for those who keep hyping him as the next big guard. NOW they want to trade him when is value is garbage.

But! Get this, they want an excellent player back for him. Irony.

  39. Gravatar Icon 39 dave p

Flush Lamar. The O-dumb experiment has been a flop. I wish we would have traded Lamar for Kwame. At least when the dust settled we would have one decent player (Butler) instead of the two hopelessly inconsistent underachievers we are stuck with now.
