Kobe on MNF tonight

mnf.jpgThe following was posted on Kobe Bryant’s official website, KB24.com:

Check the halftime segment of tonight’s Monday Night Football matchup between the Broncos and Chargers to find an interview with Kobe. Mike Tirico will be asking the questions, and LeBron will also be in the interview. Should be fun…

Jackson: Kobe will not be traded

Coach indicates deal is unlikely because Lakers wouldn’t get anything close to equal value, ‘like giving up a diamond for some garnets.’

L.A. Times: The trade deadline is almost two months away, but Coach Phil Jackson doesn’t see Kobe Bryant going anywhere, the strongest such statement by a Lakers official that their top player will still be theirs at season’s end.

“There just [aren't] any comparable situations,” Jackson said. “It’s like giving up a diamond for some garnets, whatever, I don’t know.”

The trade deadline is Feb. 21.

Jackson also chuckled at Bryant’s revelation Saturday to reporters that the Knicks were one of the teams on his destination list during the off-season.

“He was just being kind,” Jackson said. “That wasn’t a serious issue.”

Down the road, however, Jackson acknowledged that Bryant could terminate his contract after next season, which would leave two years and $47.8 million on the table but would make him a free agent.

“His contract has an option,” Jackson said. “There’s an actual situation that evolves for him.”

Kwamba might be back for Christmas

Daily News: The medical news was good for Kwame Brown on Friday.

Coach Phil Jackson said Brown might be ready to practice Monday for the first time since suffering sprains of his left knee and ankle in the Lakers’ victory Nov. 18 against the Chicago Bulls.

If Brown’s practice goes well, then he might be able to play Tuesday against the Phoenix Suns at Staples Center.

“We’re hoping he’s going to practice,” Jackson said. “He had a good workout (Friday) and there’s a glimmer of hope that he’ll be able to practice on Monday.

“We need another big guy to help us out. Phoenix is not the team that you’re hoping to have a big guy back for, but it still helps. He may be able to play after one practice, depending on his reaction to the practice itself.”

D-Fish Better Than Expected

PE: It was assumed, and correctly so, when the Lakers acquired Derek Fisher, that his leadership would be immeasurable.

It was assumed, and correctly so, when Fisher came back to the Lakers for a second go-round, that he would be a major upgrade over the moody Smush Parker at point guard.

Fisher has been a voice of reason, a leader and a calming influence for the young Lakers. He also has been very productive on the court, which has been somewhat overlooked because of all the other qualities Fisher has brought.

Fisher says he heard all the talk of the intangibles he would bring and agreed, but expected a lot more of himself.

“I wanted to be able to put the work in this summer,” he said. “Even with our tough schedule as a family, I still wanted to find ways to really train at a high level and come back and help this team.”

When Fisher departed the Lakers after the 2004 season, his offensive role immediately expanded. Taking more shots, he surpassed his previous highs as a Laker, averaging 11.9 points for Golden State the next season and a career-best 13.3 points in 2005-06. He also established a new high in assists that season.

This season Fisher has emerged as the Lakers’ third-leading scorer, averaging 12.1 points on a career-best 49.5 percent shooting. He’s shooting 36.2 percent from three-point range and a career-high 90.6 percent from the free-throw line.

Lakers recall Coby Karl from D-Fenders

Great. Now, we can see that Kobe & Coby backcourt that we’ve all wanted to watch.

Lakers.com: The Los Angeles Lakers have recalled guard Coby Karl from the NBA Development League’s Los Angeles D-Fenders, it was announced today. Karl, who became the 11th NBA player assigned to a D-League affiliate this season on November 28, played 10 games (10 starts) with the D-Fenders, averaging 18.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 38.5 minutes while shooting .435 from three-point range and .492 from the field.

In two games with the Lakers this season, Karl, an undrafted rookie out of Boise State, has posted two points, one rebound and two assists in four total minutes.

TLN’s Post-Game Report: Lakers vs. Knicks

wherekobehappens.jpgIf you missed this game, you missed an entertaining one. I would have guessed the Lakers to come out sluggish with the 9 am start local time. However, it was the other way around. The Lakers game out hot and blew the game open with a 25 point lead in the third. Boo’s came in regularly and a “fire Isiah” chant could be heard through the arena. Then the Lakers bench came in and everything went wrong. The Knicks backcourt went off on the Lakers. The night was saved by Kobe’s near triple double and Farmar’s game winning steal with 5 seconds left.

My frustration with this game is pretty simple. How do you have 9 less turnovers than the Knicks and only win by 5? And how do you shoot 26 three-point shots against one of the worst interior defensive teams in the league? Was the Curry/Randolph (combined 0.7 bpg) duo that intimidating that we needed to hoist 26 threes? Usually the team that rebounds better wins, but that wasn’t the case tonight as the Lakers got outrebounded by 14 mostly due to David Lee’s 13 off the bench. But anyways, a win is a win right? And the Lakers are 7 games over .500 going into Christmas. A successful trip I would say. Now, the bests of the morning:

Kobe is youngest to score 20,000 points as Lakers win

ESPN: Kobe Bryant scored 39 points, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to reach 20,000, and the Los Angeles Lakers held off the New York Knicks 95-90 Sunday.

Bryant added 11 rebounds and eight assists in his first game at Madison Square Garden in nearly two years. His 3-pointer in the opening minute of the third quarter allowed him to reach the milestone at 29 years, 122 days.

Before him, only Wilt Chamberlain (29, 134) and Michael Jordan (29, 326) had gotten there before turning 30.

Bryant’s last basket came in the final minute after the Knicks had trimmed a 25-point deficit to one. The victory capped a 3-1 road trip for the Lakers, who headed home to host Phoenix on Christmas Day.

Jamal Crawford scored 31 points for the Knicks, who were again without Stephon Marbury and have lost two straight and eight of 10. David Lee had 12 points and 13 rebounds, and Nate Robinson scored 16 points.

Despite a sometimes sloppy effort that included no assists in the second quarter, the Knicks were spared the usual wrath of their fans, who instead seemed content to cheer Bryant and Andrew Bynum, a New Jersey product.

In fact, fans cheered when Bryant had to get off the bench to return to the game early in the fourth quarter after the Knicks closed within single digits. Sasha Vujacic then made a 3-pointer and Jordan Farmar knocked down a jumper, seemingly putting Los Angeles back in control at 80-68 with 9:45 to play.
