Long before the topic de jour came about, the Lakers Nation has debated the abilities of Kwame Brown amongst themselves. There was once a day when the crowd at Staples chanted “Kwame! Kwame!” Obviously, those days are long gone. Now the Lakers Nation is feuding back and forth about the appropriateness of booing a home player.
In the aftermath of Thursday night’s debacle chastising words came forth from fans in all four corners of the globe, the media pundits, and even from the Lakers themselves. This was to be expected. Contrary to prevailing wisdom, the boos to Kwame were also to be expected.
Let’s begin by stating the obvious. Caron Butler was a fan favorite and was our number two player in the 2005 season. We were a lottery team that year, but Caron’s inspired play made many of us fans feel hopeful. Then, Lakers management traded him for Kwame Brown. Having grown accustomed to shrewd trades by our management staff, many of us fans held out hope that Brown’s abilities would blossom for the Lakers.
When Kwame finally was able to start for the Lakers later that season, he seemed to play inspired and gave the Lakers an athletic boost at the post position that helped the Lakers into an extremely impressive late season run and subsequent 3 to 1 edge over the favored Suns.
However, earlier in the season, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had offered to help Kwame Brown improve as a post player. Not seeing himself as a boring back to the basket type of a player, Kwame politely declined Kareem’s offer. Overlooking his legal trouble, Kwame ended the 2006 playoffs looking like a solid player. The fans were happy, the team was happy, and most importantly, Kwame was happy.
The Lakers had become the talk of the town once again. Though they managed to blow the 3 to 1 game lead over the Suns, most fans and pundits felt the Lakers would play fairly well. The coaching staff, however, heard Kwame profess that he had “never” worked on improving his skills in any off season; never, as in not only that summer, but no other previous summers either.
Though the Lakers were off to a hot start last season, a problem began to arise on the Lakers team. The fans noticed a complacent Smush Parker grow increasingly negative. Smush had regressed. When the team imploded, there wasn’t a lot of positives to discuss. The Lakers had too many players that never worked to improve their game, and Kwame was one of those players.
Fans across the world saw Kwame Brown cashing annual paychecks of over $9 million dollars, but they hardly ever saw a player that cared enough to improve his weaknesses. In the meantime, the former fan favorite, Caron Butler, became an All-Star in Washington. With this, a sour taste began to form in mouths across Lakers Nation.
After all the turmoil of this past off season, we were braced for the worst. Knowing that our only hope was an All-Star caliber season from our post player, we became elated when Andrew Bynum showed us exactly what we were missing. However, once Bynum went down with his injury, the Lakers Nation experienced a bad case of déjà vu.
We all know how last season’s injuries led to our demise. The likes of Smush Parker or Brian Cook were not enough to lift our team from the doldrums and into legitimate contention for something that actually meant something other than a first round embarrassment. Though those two particular players happen to be gone, their impact remains in the fan psyche.
Simply put, if the Lakers themselves cannot win a game, Lakers fans want to see players make strong efforts. Fans want to see players doing all they can to win. This would apply not only to a particular game they happen to be watching, but also to a member of our team. We want a player who will work to improve their shortcomings.
There’s no other way to say it, Kwame Brown has never done this.
Thursday’s game was more than just Thursday’s game. While it certainly had its playoff ramifications on the line since the winner of the game would have a decisive lead for the Western Conference’s top position, the very thing fans were watching closely was how well the team would play with Kwame Brown in the middle. In several games previously, and even before Kwame was injured by a flopping Ben Wallace, Kwame had shown further regression into mediocrity.
If there’s one thing Lakers fans cannot stand, it’s mediocre play stemming from mediocre effort.
If a player repeats the same mistakes for years on end with little care to improve those mistakes, the fans absolutely will turn on that player.
What happened Thursday was the culmination of Kwame Brown’s lackluster efforts as a Lakers player. This includes on the court performances, off the court behavior, and most importantly his lack of diligence to improve.
Conversely, fans appreciate the likes of Jordan Farmar and Andrew Bynum simply because they want to win so badly that they did all they could to improve over this past summer. Most of us look and marvel at the great improvement that can come from one simple off season of hard work. We then look at the several off seasons a player like Kwame has squandered and become outraged.
The boos on Kwame may not have been the best way to boost his performance. However, lacking the ability to interact with Kwame Brown or Lakers management directly, cheers or boos become the very feedback mechanism that’s integral for team success. In other words, when the fans in New York think Isiah Thomas ought to be fired, they boo. When Lakers fans were upset with Magic Johnson for requesting a trade that forced the coach to get fired, the fans booed him. When fans disagreed with Kobe’s off season tirade, they booed him the first chance they got. The crowd’s reaction serves as vital feedback for the players and management. There’s not too many ways to voice an opinion. When fans are upset about players who continually mail it in, they boo. Voicing their opinion is the necessary role of the fans.
On the opposite side of the coin, the players and coaches must create a positive atmosphere that allows everyone to perform at their best. When Kobe, Jordan, and Phil Jackson recently stood up for Kwame and simultaneously put down fans that boo, they were fulfilling their necessary role.
Thus, the fans have performed their obligation to their team: they booed like crazy. The players have performed their obligation to their team: they stood up like crazy.
The question is, will Kwame now use this opportunity?
Reports are now surfacing that Kwame showed up at practice early yesterday to work on his post play with coaching assistant Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
From the sounds of it, fans across the nation ought to rejoice. Instead of bickering about when it’s okay to boo or not, the fans should realize that the boos serve a vital function. That function is not to build up Kwame, rather the function is give Kwame Brown necessary feedback. The feedback was said in plain bold letters: Work on your game, or get off of our team.
From the sounds of it, Kwame Brown heard the message loud and clear.

I think Kwame can be an effective center if he would learn a couple of things; One not to rush his shot and the second thing is to pump fake. A person don’t have to be able to jump that high if he pump fakes. Look at Kevin Mchale he always used the pump fake. That’s why he never got his shot block. Great article. I’ve always believed Kwame has a lot of potential. As for the other article with 200+ comments, most of those were those babies arguing with each other lol. Several of them were also bashing a lot of other Laker-related things than Kwame. Anyway, Kwame knows his ultimatum now. I think he’ll pull through.

I’m glad that Kwame has chosen to work on his game and it shows that he finally, for once, wants to improve. I think we should now not boo him, as long as we hear he’s continuing to work - results won’t be instant. You have to understand that.
I’m not going to come to Kwame’s defense because he has proven to be a player that has not lived up to expectations BUT one thing the author of the article leaves out is that Kwame has a serious ankle injury in the middle of last season that required surgery in the offseason. For those of you who don’t remember, it came on New Years Eve when the Lakers played the 76ers at home. Andre Miller was driving in the lane, shot a floating shot that Kwame blocked, but unfortunately Kwame left foot (I think it was his left foot) came down on Miller’s foot resulting in a nasty ankle injury. To quote Kobe Bryant, “”Defensively is where Kwame really gives us a big charge, because he’s so versatile and quick and can cover a lot of small players.”
Again, earlier this year, Kwame sprained his knee and that same surgically repaired ankle. For those who don’t remember, it was against Chicago, Kobe Bryant was driving into the lane and charged into a flopping Ben Wallace and Wallace came down on Kwame’s left knee and left ankle.
Kwame was never that great to begin with but after that injury he is now performing worse than ever. He’s not mobile, he can’t jump, and he’s not as quick as he used to be. The ankle injuries to Mihm and Brown have been huge setbacks in their careers where neither will ever be the same.

That means the boos got the point across. For all the “your not a true Laker fan if you boo our player,” I mean look there’s nothing worse than when you as a fan want to win more than a player…Kwame needed a wake up call, to let him know that all the Lakers have worked for should not be in vain this season b/c of his lack of effort. Like I’ve said in other comments this was building up…He has had poor outings before, the Laker fans are now spoiled by winning and that’s fine…We’ve lost before…we get upset, we move forward…But it’s one thing to lose as a team it’s another to just not have your game show up, over and over again…We’re all entitled to be forgiven so if Kwame is trying to right his wrongs, let’s have his back…since he has decided to finally “try” and have ours….

Yes, Kwame has had his fair share of injuries. I even mentioned in the article that he suffered one thanks to a flopping Ben Wallace.
His injuries weren’t the issue. He already had a negative lenovo BEFORE he was hit by Wallace. It wasn’t so much this past off season, when he happened to work on his game by averaging 50 in his summer league play: NBA Live on Xbox…. it was more that in all the previous summers, he never once worked on his game, and he had admitted that to the coaching staff at one point.
Still… maybe, just maybe this will be his wake up call. I don’t think the fans expect a miracle from him, they only ask that he cares and that he works to better himself. Because, unless you’re as good as Shaq, we are too fickle about our team to put up with a player that has a very big importance to our team but yet just cashes huge checks and throws fan’s cakes.
Laughter aside, I’m cheering FOR Kwame to go out there and give his best, not only in games but in practice and maybe even more importantly before and after practice!

i was proud of the lakers nation fans for not sugar coating our feelings when we knew that enough was enough. we have patience (3 years for kwame) but, we also have a breaking point.
I will still continue to boo him. He finally shows up to practice early and ask for Kareems help when he is under the microscope. He only now wants to improve because he is embrassed. He only now wants to improve because he got booed. A weekend of extra work will not make-up for 6 previous offseason were he could have improved his game. When the season is over they need to let him go. I hope no other team picks him up, so he can realize the talent and opportunity he wasted.

I agree with mplakers…little league, high school, and college you support the KIDS no matter what. These are PRO athletes, grown a$$ men who get paid millions of dollars to perfect what they do. We have to at our jobs. If we don’t perform we get fired…so should they! That includes management! Mitch, Luke, Vlad, Lamar you’re next! I think basketball contracts should be like football, non-guaranteed. You don’t perform, you get CUT!

Im not surprised at all with Kwame’s play, but Luke Walton has been a big disapointment so far with his career. He has yet to improve on any part of his game, and yet the fans give him a pass by yelling LUUUUUUUUKE whenever he makes a good pass or a three point shot. The Lakers as a team should really look in the mirror and start asking themselves some questions. Like, are we dead in the water just because our 20 year old center went down? Thats just the way it is you win some you lose some, remember when we won trading Vlade for the draft rights to Kobe and even the trade for Kareem so before you start knocking Kwame and the MGT Staff just remember sometimes a new start for an individual such as Kwame might have paid dividends but unfortunately it didnt however with that being said we need Kwame when we play teams such SA or Houston or any team with a powerful inside game cuz at least he plays great post defense.

It’s everybody’s choice, but the best thing we can do is support our players whether they played good and bad cause it’s our team. Everybody has an off nights, it happens to anybody.I think kwame deserves a second chance to prove his worth. But he needs to do it now or never. We cannot afford to loose another game.

It is hard to take anything seriously from you given all the crap you have said in the past and are still saying today. Its so funny when people on this website trip out and get angry when comments are made about trading Bynum. Bynum is the so called future with potential that he might never meet and Kobe is the great one who can lead us to a championship. Kobe is the present and he’s the cornerstone to the Lakers right now. Bynum is a project that is still progressing at a slow pace. You can’t have your player of the future “Bynum” who may never turn out to be what people think he will be to play on the same team when you have your present “Kobe” who can lead the Lakers to a championship. The team would be in dissaray. Are we rebuilding or playing for a championship? We make these trades not for the sake of Kobe, but for the sake of “WINNING NOW” because thats what it’s all about. Make JO a Laker and compete this season!!!
Michael_23 you have made a very valid and excellent point. Why are we trying so desperately to invest in Bynum. Build around Kobe and if he walks in two years, Lebron, Wade, Bosh, and Melo are all available and I’m sure we could lure one of them. Bynum will never take us to the promise land, he’s just another pea in the pod. Why are we hanging onto our young guys with potential which I think is lame when I say we take a chance with JO. If it don’t work, sign Bynum “if” or when he’ll ever be good when he’s a free agent again. Steve Nash proved you can go home again and he had lots of potential to be Jason Kidds prodige when Phoenix drafted him and they still traded him. He has no ill will towards them. It’s like some laker fans on this website, I won’t name any names (AB4SURE) thinks we’ll die if we lose Bynum. Grow some marbles and take a chance with JO you freakin moron. I guess you didn’t get the memo. We can always get him later in free agency again or via trade, it doesn’t mean we lose him forever IDIOT! ab4sure, I think you need to come clean and kiss Jim Buss on the ass. All your arguments center around Bynum and that’s thanks to Buss. He is the reason he is a Laker. Stop running around the blog preaching that Mitch is the godsend for keeping Bynum when it was Jim Buss’ credit that he is here. The fact that Andrew Bynum and Jordan Farmar became this good over one, ONE!, offseason and Kwame doesn’t work at all and declined to learn to play the post from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? No way if the guy was good enough to come out of highschool into the NBA, why wouldn’t you work your hardest to stay. This guy is about two years away from not playing in the NBA.
