The Lakers Nation wish John Wooden a speedy recovery!

We here at TheLakersNation.com wish Mr. Wooden a speedy recovery. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Get well!

ESPN: John Wooden’s daughter says the former UCLA basketball coach broke his left wrist and collarbone in a fall.

Daughter Nan Muehlhausen said Friday that the 97-year-old Wooden fell in his condo Thursday night. She said family members visited him at a hospital Friday.

“Dad’s spirits are good,” Muehlhausen said in a statement. “He is up and joking around with the family. He will probably be in the hospital for a couple of more days before he goes home.”

Wooden has a hairline fracture in his wrist and a fractured collarbone.

“The entire UCLA community wishes coach Wooden a speedy recovery,” said UCLA head coach Ben Howland, who is in Tucson for Sunday’s game against Arizona. “We are glad that his injuries are not more serious, and we look forward to seeing him when we return to Los Angeles.”

Kobe: ‘We the best! It’s our championship! Our season!’

Damn straight Kobe. Go prove ‘em wrong MVP (About 1:10 into the video)

Lakers Video: “We the best! Know that, don’t think it, know it! Its our turn! It’s our championship! Our season! Lets go out here and make a statement! Its our turn now! Let’s go! What time is it? Game time!”

Kobe nears “technical” limit

This is scary; it carries over in to the post-season…

Kobe Bryant picked up three technical fouls in a two-game stretch this week, pushing him to a season total of 11, five away from being automatically suspended by the league for one game.

“He’s close to the limit . . . so he’s going to have to be careful,” Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said.

So, anyone think he won’t get 5 more?

The Birth of “The Machine”

themechine.jpg

It is the 2004 NBA Draft live from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Players such as Dwight Howard, Emeka Okafor, Ben Gordon, Andre Iguodala, and Luke Jackson have all been taken in the lottery, and thus went up to take their picture with the Commissioner David Stern. All the players that were scheduled to be there had already heard their name called.

Now the Lakers are on the clock, and draft little known (at least by most Lakers fans) Sasha Vujacic, a 6’7 guard out of Slovenia. Unexpectedly, and without an invitation, Sasha is in the building and proceeds to put on his purple and gold Lakers hat, and go up for his picture with the Commissioner. Lakers fans were left pondering how would this young man pan out. Now in his 4th season, “The Machine” has emerged.

TLN’s Post-Game Report: Lakers vs. Heat

lalmia.jpg

A sweep of the Heat give the Lakers their first 10 game winning streak in quite some time. In fact, I think the way the Lakers are playing right now as a team is one of the best I have ever seen. The Lakers are easily 10 deep when healthy and showed it tonight. The Lakers cruised to a 106-88 victory over the heat tonight.

As a team, they grabbed 55 total rebounds, mostly because Miami was held to only 38% FG shooting. The Lakers had four different players get double figure rebounds tonight, led by Ronny with 12. The Lakers shot 48% from the field, 40% from three, and 82% from the stripe. The best part was the Lakers defense. They had 8 steals, 12 blocks, and held Wade to only 6-17 shooting. As a team the Lakers had 28 assists and were moving the ball well. It seemed as if every Laker was touching the ball tonight.

Now, the bests of the night…

Play of Lakers’ second unit is first-rate

L.A. Times: The Lakers are on top of the Western Conference.

Their reserves might be there too.

Be it Sasha Vujacic’s three-point accuracy, Jordan Farmar’s push-the-pace persona or Ronny Turiaf’s liveliness around the basket, the Lakers have received continual contributions from their second unit.

Is it the best in the West?

“Well, we’d like to think it was,” Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said.

Like the conference race, it’s a close call.

San Antonio has a scoring machine in Manu Ginobili and hardy center-forward Kurt Thomas.

Phoenix has versatile Boris Diaw and whiz-quick Leandro Barbosa coming off the bench.

Dallas has veteran scorers in Jason Terry, who was a reserve for much of the season, and Jerry Stackhouse.

Cap’s Blog: Speaks on Drew’s Status

Kareem speaks out on questions on Lakers, Bynum. When asked about Bynum’s progress, the G.O.A.T. had this to say…

VideoBlog: Question: What is the status of Andrew Bynum’s rehabilitation?

Kareem: I’ve had several questions about Andrew Bynum and his progress and his rehabilitation. Andrew is coming along just fine. We don’t know how long it’s going to take, but he’s going to take whatever time it needs to get completely well and then I expect him to be back with the Lakers and dominating the paint. That’s what I trained him for and I’m so happy to see him doing well at that. Thanks for your questions. I’m sure Andrew appreciates your interest.

Ariza medical update

Ariza injury news…

Daily News: Jackson said he expects Trevor Ariza to return to the practice court in April. He declined to say whether he believed Ariza could be a key contributor off the bench. Ariza has been sidelined for more than a month by a fractured right foot.

“I can’t guess on that,” Jackson said. “We’re really hopeful he will (be productive when he returns). With Trevor, his injury is such that when he does come back it probably will be just a matter of days before coming back full bore. When he comes back, and we anticipate it should be in April, he should be able to get back in rhythm.”

The Great Space Coaster!

Here’s a little “ditty” from 1981’s kid show I’m sure some of you will remember…

“It’s the Great Space Coaster. Get on board.
On the Great Space Coaster. We’ll explore.

A comet ride of fantasy
To a place where dreams are fast and free
With new friends and new things to see
We’ll spin you through the galaxy

On the Great Space Coaster. Oh-oh-oh.
On the Great Space Coaster. Off we go.

NBA Finals Leap Year Theory

NBA Dailytake: The 2008 Lakers are well on their way to the NBA finals. That is if you believe in the “Phil Jackson/Lakers Leap Year Theory.” Either a Phil Jackson coached team or a Lakers team has made the NBA finals every leap year from 1980-present.

1988: Lakers win the NBA Championship (4-3)
1992: Phil’s Bulls win the NBA Championship (4-2)

2000: Phil’s Lakers win the NBA Championship (4-2)
2004: Phil’s Lakers lose in the NBA Finals (1-4)
2008: ?

The Lakers are the current favorites to win it, but now you also have this added tidbit to keep yourself busy with. It may be a good time to start placing your bets…
