Persistent pain likely to delay Gasol’s return

O.C. Register: It has pained Pau Gasol to watch his team the past two games. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to help until the pain subsides in his sprained left ankle.

That might be next week rather than tonight after he tested it Saturday at the team’s practice facility.

“It’s still pretty sore,” Gasol said. “I don’t know. It’s still doubtful. We’ll see how it feels tomorrow. Hopefully it will get better tomorrow. If not, maybe take a couple of days in between and go for Wednesday.”

Gasol will see how it responds today before the Lakers play Washington tonight. Their next game after that is Wednesday against Portland.

Gasol did some half-court work and ran in a straight line, but he still has pain and soreness when he turns and does other basketball moves. The club might be best suited to use the extra two days and target Wednesday for his return.

“I’m trying to get the pain under control and be able to handle it well, because it’s going to be painful for a while,” he said. “I just want to be effective out there. I don’t want to be out there just to be out there.”

    Finally some good news.

  3. Gravatar Icon 3 Michael_23

This happens cause the Lakers have been losing one too many games lately …

If they won the last 2 games they might have hold Pau til Wednesday. But man, if dude wants to play let him play!!!

  4. Gravatar Icon 4 west213

man come back on sunday and play like 20 min, we neeeed you….
    no gasol=another loss

STILL GOT PAIN…MAN UP!! i sprained my ankle and got better within a week…we need sum good conditioning

  7. Gravatar Icon 7 lafanfromindiana

Sit him on Sunday! I want him 100 percent for the playoffs. With our crowd sitting all game and being the worse crowd in the NBA, homecourt doesn’t mean that much. With my experience, an ankle that is not 100 percent is very easy to re-injure and we definetly don’t want that! If Kobe is the MVP over Chris Paul, he should be able to get this win over the Wizards without Gasol.

  8. Gravatar Icon 8 SliqRiq

Your right lafanfromindiana, Ive always said that the LA crowd sucks they give our team no motivation or energy whatsoever, mostly because all the close seats are filled with dam celebrities that act like if they’re watching an opera all the real fans are way at the top.

    These guys better win tomorrow!!!!

  9. Gravatar Icon 9 drake hunter

Gasol are you for real? You freakin sprained your ankle man you didn’t break it. You’ve already been out 8 games which is over two weeks. Thats enough rest time for an ankle sprain. Tape that S H I T up double time and get back on the damn court. We need you! MAN THE F U C K UP!

But he still is a maybe for tomorrow’s game, right?

i agree, Lakers tickets are too expensive for the real rowdy and animated fans-they need more Dodgers fans at Lakers game, i go to about 20-30 Dodgers games a year and those crowds scare away opposingteams fans….Last year i went to see the Lakers play the suns at the end of the season when we were fighting for playoff spot and there were plenty of suns fans there that were louder than the Lakers fans-at Dodgers games that would not be allowed. Sad thing is, mostly all Dodgers fans are Lakers fans as well and when i was at a game last year it was during a Lakers playoff game(the only one we won) they showed the highlights on the jumbo screen and the fans were going nutz!!!!!! LOUDER THAN FANS AT LAKERS GAMES!!!!!

Bynum could be back with Lakers soon

Lakers center Andrew Bynum, who hasn’t played since January, will make the upcoming two-game road trip with the Lakers, although whether he’ll play or not is undetermined.
Center will accompany team on upcoming trip. Gasol probably won’t play Sunday.
By Mike Bresnahan, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
    7:50 PM PDT, March 29, 2008
After gruesome home losses to Charlotte and Memphis, some mildly pleasant news awaited the Lakers on Saturday.

Pau Gasol participated in a brief scrimmage and Andrew Bynum was told by Coach Phil Jackson he would accompany the team on a two-game trip next week, though he wouldn’t necessarily play.

Bynum was doing “really well” in his recovery after working his way through some patellar tendinitis in his injured left knee, Jackson said.

“It’s not really connected to his injury per se. It was just the amount of work that he’s started to be able to do, which is impressive,” Jackson said. “I told him to expect to go on the trip to Sacramento [next Sunday] and Portland [on April 8]. Whether he can play or not, it may not be that time, but he’s going to go through the workouts and practices and the pregame and whatever we have.”

The Lakers have four regular-season games left after that trip.

Gasol, who has sat out eight games because of a sprained left ankle, took part in a five-minute scrimmage at the team’s training facility, but probably won’t play tonight against Washington. He could run straight ahead Saturday without any pain but still had trouble planting and cutting, he said.

“It was a first step,” he said. “It’s still pretty sore. I’m still doubtful. We’ll see how it feels [Sunday].”

The Lakers’ next game after tonight is Wednesday against Portland.

The Lakers (49-24) could definitely use Gasol after showing an inability to control their home court against lesser teams.

Gasol sat on the bench Friday night, chin often planted on his hand, while watching Memphis, his former team, hit the Lakers with another embarrassing loss at Staples Center.

As has been the case the past few months, there were other injury updates to sift through.

Derek Fisher did not practice Saturday because of a partially torn tendon in his right foot but is expected to play against Washington. Lamar Odom missed practice while continuing to recover from an upper-respiratory infection. Also, Trevor Ariza could begin running in about two weeks. He has been out 35 games because of a broken bone in his right foot.

“If the diagnostics show that he’s had healing, he can get where he wants to get to,” Jackson said. “He goes and has [medical] pictures every two weeks and if he’s got a white line in there that shows it’s still not healing, he’s got to wait. The last news we had was he could be on the court running approximately two weeks from now.”

Let’s not forget, lakers could lose 2 or 3 more straight games, and end up being 7th or 8th seed in this conference. Play Pau limited mins and let’s get some easy baskets in the low post. Let’s slaughter the Wizards so that by the 4th we could rest our starters cause they need it.

They’ve been playing hard in the 4th against mediocre teams lately it’s gotta be draining them out.

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 domz

Look’s like the return of Gasol and Bynum is getting near…As my opinion, i want Gasol back against Portaland rather, however, if it would cost us another game..HeLL No!! So I want gasol back in the game, maybe for about 20 min only..The lakers must establish the lead early, like what they done against the Wizards last February, so Pau and other starters would have rest for their injuries..This time, our starters must be more aggresive and should distribute the ball well for points inside..No more too much 3’s please!!!

Just don’t lose hope guyz..and BELIEVE!!!
I hope we’ll have 9-0 in the remaining games..I want Bynum and Pau back before we face the Spurs and Hornets so we can have revenge..

    GOODLUCK LAKERS!!!
    BEAT WASHINGTON!!!

We beat Dallas, utah, and GS without Gasol. No need to panic if we play the right way.

    shaq a laker again
no way, no need for shaq
the lakers need to either trade Vlad or Luke

last year luke was a starter and he did good, but now he doesn’t play well as a bench player.

this year Vlad is a starter and he is playing well but last year he was not a starter and he played poorly

now lets compare luke last year to vlad this year

    Offense

Last year luke was a great passer, was able to penetrate, he was shooting 3s great for a while but he is not consistent from the perimeter, the lakers already have 2 great passers kobe and LO, and an over average passer Pau, so he would be another

this year radmanovic has been doing it from the perimeter, but sasha, fisher, and farmar are also some pretty good 3 ball shooters. Vlad has a slightly under average post game, he could really improve his mid range game.

    Defense

Luke has a better defensive IQ but it seems like radmanovic is even with luke on defense if not better, luke gets more rebounds but radmanovic has the potential of being a better rebounder

    Athleticism
luke is shorter than vlad and has better stamina, however radmanovic is probably quicker. luke really gould lose weight though

overall, it is a hard decision, but the choice has to be made, luke doesn’t seem like he wants to improve his game, he thinks he has reached potential, he thinks he is older than he is, and he spends too much time on life with luke

No need to panic? WTF!…We just lost to two of the worst teams in the league back to back on our own home court and Kobe scored 53 points in one of those games…all I have to say is WOW! At first I thought you were a dumbazz but now I can’t talk s h i t on you anymore because I just realized you were born an idiot and you can’t help it. I apologize for all the horrible comments I ever said you on this website and you can probably pull up every single one to prove me right!

We must get this win 2mrrow we must atleast soltify our spot in da west we got spurs and hornets 1 mo time so 1st place is still n da picture we need the playoff to go through us not San antino or new orleans IT MUST COME THROUGH US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(unlike some people said homecourt doesnt matter well folks it a matter)

  20. Gravatar Icon 20 Lakers2410

…I…I-I just, just don’t know what’ll be our future, yeah, it’s very hard to be a Laker fan in our days, why, just the other day I heard one of my friends who “is” a Laker fan still talk about Kobe’s rape case, I didn’t want to say anything, but I didn’t really think it’d matter saying it. While I’m in the locker room I see some guys talking about Kobe being a ballhog, and I just wanted to turn into something that looks super-scary and intimidating and kill ‘em all! I really hope that Bynum will return with 6 or so games left in the season, and that Gasol will return by tommorrow, but that’s all I can do, is just wait and hope that all of our money we spend on our medical staff/trainers is worth it, that STINKS!

i go to some dodger games too, and the crowd is amazing. and in laker games the crowd could get loud at times but… well umm, you know.

and great news on Pau and Bynum. we will dominate once again.

  22. Gravatar Icon 22 kb24 4life

actually, i think that the people in the crowd is quiet in part because of the announcer, for example, in detroit just to mention chauncey when he makes a basket, the announcer says CHAUNCEY B-B-B-BILLUPS, and everybody goes crazy, here in LA we have the best player in the league and the old man just says KOBEEE BRYANT, thats all, no nicknames, nothing to cheer about… thats my opinion…

  23. Gravatar Icon 23 RD

i agree with kb24 4life. stu lantz is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAMN BORING! no disrespect, cuz he’s been with LA for so many years, but the way he announces is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAMN BORING!!! when your announceing the LAKERS you should be hyped and excited!!!! its the frickin LAKERS!!! i would PAY to announce a laker game!!!! but stu lantz is again… SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAMN BORING!!!!!

Stu Lantz is the color analyst. If you think the TV broadcast is boring perhaps the blame lies with the play by play announcer, which is Joel Meyers.

I would prefer that Spiro Deddes, our radio announcer, took over the TV duties. I think he is a lot more exciting to listen to than Joel.

  25. Gravatar Icon 25 kb24 4life

well, i wasnt refering to stu and joel, i was refering to the guy that speaks in the arena, the one that announces the starting lineups and who scores the baskets , the guy that is live in the staples center,, but also stu…

Little boys panic and then run to their Daddy. I don’t see any panic in kobe or the lakers. I understand you just started hs and being a laker fan is new to you so your really scared now. Don’t worry, the lakers are fine. Remember how we beat Dallas, Utah, GS etc without Pau. You keep worrying over one or two losses.

I know you had some humiliating posts and you still refuse to give credit to Mitch. Perhaps because he went against your advice and didn’t listen to your ranting and raging and alot of crying. I know you refuse to admit your trades were no good. I think your the only one on Lakernation who refuses to credit Kupchak. Perhaps that is what is causing all this angst in you now. I never have been bothered by your commments because I know they come from a panicky little boy. You need to vent. Lakernation allows you too. Temper tantrum are acceptable, but no one listens to them. Sorry!!!

Lawrence Tantar has been with the lakers for a long time. I dont even pay attention to the PA announcers, but does it really matter what they say and how they say it? all i know is when a laker makes a basket i cheer anyways, i dont need the PA announcer to get me into it.
and Lawrence said the reason he doesent go crazy is because he doesent want to sound like an idiot yelling.
