Lakers sign Ira for rest of season

To be expected…

L.A. Times: Defense-minded forward Ira Newble was signed for the rest of the season for about $110,000. Newble, 33, who has two points in four minutes of game action with the Lakers, is eligible for the playoffs. The Lakers picked Newble up after Seattle waived him in February.

I hope he gets some playing time this time around

i heard someone on lakers line a few games back say that we have too many offensive minded players. i think that’s also true of our coaches, or at least phil jackson. the main reason ira hasn’t been playing is because he’s not yet comfortable in the offense. if i’m not mistaken, we got him for defense. i just don’t understand how he can’t find more than 4 minutes in 10 games, especially when defense has been our weakest element. defense is at least 50% of the game. just wanted to put that out there…i still love our team and would not trade phil jackson for anyone.

    Try playing em now.

I think I like this, another defensive stopper. But I wonder if that means Ariza will be out longer? We need help and we need it soon!

  5. Basher says:

Maybe he can actually get some playing time. He could be an asset to the team if we utilize his strength (defense on the perimeter).

  6. kb24 4life says:

i hope he gets more PT…

  7. Phant0M says:

    ok
if we have him we should PLAY HIM

  9. Keep Odom says:

If Phil felt that putting Ira in would benefit the team i’m sure he would do it. But, the main reason why he does not put him in is because of his lack of understanding of the triangle offense. Its not like he play defense and check back out every time they are on offense. So it just seems that he is a good defensive player but a liability on offense. So, as long as he gets a better understanding of the offense during practices I dont see Phil putting him in unless it’s a blowout. Besides this just seems that Ariza might not be back until late in the playoffs and that Ira will defenitely get to play a lot more in the playoffs.

Ira will be used against the top teams like San Antonio.

  11. daboss1848 says:

Statement from PJ was that Ira was best player in practice prior to game with WAS. This begs the question – y didnt he play.

Perhaps in PJ’s world, PT is not earned during practices. . .

We had two blowout losses against inferior squads, yet there was no time for Ira?

  12. FOXXY says:

COME ON PHIL…LET IRA PLAY….WE CERTAINL NEED HIM ON DEFENSE!!!!

  19. Lakers 24 7 says:

A series in the playoffs takes about 2 weeks, which gives Ariza plenty of time to recover, and maybe Newble will get some playing time, I expect him to guard Travis Outlaw tommorow against portland
