NBA.com MVP Race: Kobe is doing “his best Tracy McGrady impersonation”

Interesting comment by NBA.com

1. Kobe Bryant, L.A. Lakers | Team Record: 49-22

Who needs Pau Gasol? Bryant has been doing his best Tracy McGrady impersonation lately, leading his team to four wins in five games while the Lakers big man in the middle is sidelined because of injury. On Monday, he once again showed his toughness missing just a minute of play after suffering a cut that required stitches, under his left eye.

Gasol doesn’t progress; might comeback Sunday?

I was hoping to see him play Friday, since a bunch of us from TLN are going to the game. I know, were a selfish bunch. ;-) However, it doesn’t seem likely. Hopefully, he comes back Sunday so they can start that playoff push.

Locker Talk: Pau Gasol did not make enough progress to take the floor at practice Tuesday, Coach Phil Jackson said, possibly pushing Gasol’s return to Sunday at the earliest.

Gasol still has swelling and soreness in his sprained ankle but Jackson stopped short of calling it a setback.

“He didn’t improve between Saturday and today,” Jackson said.

The Lakers had hoped that Gasol could practice Tuesday and be available Friday against Memphis. Asked about that target date, Jackson said, “I’m sure he’d like to be back for Memphis but I don’t know if that’s a possibility.”

The Lakers play Washington on Sunday.

‘Laker Rhapsody’ song

If your either a Los Angeles Lakers or Queens fan you will appreciate a song parody like this. The slideshow itself had be spitting coffee on my computer screen.

Walton’s up-and-down season continues for Lakers

Veteran forward’s play in the last three games has been all over the map, emblematic of his entire season.

L.A. Times: Luke Walton’s yo-yo season continued in a 72-hour slice of basketball.

He couldn’t miss against Seattle last Friday, scoring 17 points on eight-for-11 shooting and adding five rebounds and four assists. Two days later, he had four points and three turnovers against Golden State.

Then on Monday, he was somewhere in between in a rematch with the Warriors — eight points, seven rebounds, three assists.

Coach Phil Jackson could only shrug and smile.

“Well, I welcomed him back as a player after Friday night’s game. I’ll take that back after [Sunday] night’s game,” he said. “He looked like he was back in the fold Friday night, but he really struggled [Sunday] night.”

Why is that?

“His outside shot — right now, they’re just backing off him,” Jackson said. “As a result, he’s trying to get involved in there and it’s tough to do when people just disregard your outside shot. So he has to hit a shot, he has to take a shot, he has to make some shots. . . . If he isn’t, he has to continue to create things for other guys, which he is capable of doing.”

TLN’s Post-Game Report: Lakers vs. Warriors

It kind of sucks to win off a foul like that, but I’ll take it. In an ugly win, the Lakers escape with a 123-119 overtime victory in the bay area. The Lakers tonight, get this, attempted 102 field goals! They shot 45% from the field, hit 12 threes, had 53 boards, 27 assists, but 16 turnovers.

Overall, the offense was inconsistent. Sometimes it was stagnant, other times it had great movement. The key tonight was the defense as the Lakers held the Warriors to only 43% shooting. The Lakers also had 6 players in double figures.

Now, the bests of the night…

Revenge of the Lakers - TONIGHT!

Wanted to post this. I didn’t make it but saw it on someone’s MySpace…

Nelson: Kobe is MVP

Don Nelson was asked about who should be MVP. He gave his vote to Kobe…

LA Times Blog: “He’s my vote for MVP. He’s the best of the best and deserves the award more than, I think, anybody else and I hope he gets it. He’s a marvelous player, makes everybody else better. There isn’t anything that he doesn’t do. He’s a pretty sensational player.

I have enjoyed watching him all these years and I have enjoyed coaching him in one All-Star game when he got MVP.”

TLN’s Post-Game Report: Lakers vs. Warriors

This should have been one of those memorable games for the Lakers. Unfortunately, Stephen Jackson spoiled it. It’s amazing that the Lakers could score 111 points on 41% shooting and 8-27 threes. How did the Lakers jack up more threes than the Warriors? Kobe had 9 alone!

The biggest problem for the Lakers was the fast pace which led to 18 turnovers. The Lakers just didn’t take care of the ball tonight. A positive however was the teams’ free-throw shooting. LA shot 25-29 from the stripe. The team also showed resurgence after erasing a 23 point halftime deficit.

Now, the bests of the night…
