Bynum out another 6 weeks?

There’s a rumor circulating Clublakers.com that our very own Andrew Bynum might be out *gulp* another SIX WEEKS! Plus, this L.A. Times article states that he isn’t even clear to play this season nor be available for the start of the playoff. How can this happen? Sound-off in the comments and tell us what you think.

L.A. Times: Lakers center Andrew Bynum has not been cleared for full practices or to play and is doubtful for the start of the playoffs.

There is no specific date set for his return, the Lakers said today.

Bynum was examined by a knee specialist in New York on Wednesday. “Andrew will continue with his therapy program and workouts with the Lakers’ training staff and will continue to be monitored until he can return to playing status,” Dr. David Altchek said.

Bynum has been out since Jan. 13, and Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said earlier this week he hoped Bynum could begin practicing Saturday, and might play his first game Sunday game against San Antonio.

“There’s a chance,” Jackson said Tuesday. “It would have to be under a situation in which he could practice on Saturday in a way that would convince me to play him on Sunday. Right now, we’re certainly not counting on that. It’s just really a longshot.”

Bynum sustained a bone bruise in his left knee and he briefly dislocated his kneecap in the January game.

The Lakers play their last regular-season game on April 15 and the NBA playoffs begin April 19, although the Lakers first playoff game will probably be on April 20.

That’s horrible news. I know I’m being greedy now and selfish but can’t he gut it out like Pau, Fisher, and Kobe the rest of the season?

Let him play if he can. That’s all I’m gonna say for now.

  5. Gravatar Icon 5 lakerz

i still have hope of him coming back for the playoffs. it never said 6 weeks.

Zen and mindgames. No worries. Baby Bynum’s fine.

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 Frank

he’ll start at the clippers game!!

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 Geloman

Shut him down and include Newble or Bhenga on the playoff roster. Lakers need to move on without him. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll be ready by training camp.

WTF. I just don’t understand what’s wrong with his knee. It won’t stop swelling? The kids been out for about 3 months. He didn’t even need surgery. What is going on?

  21. Gravatar Icon 21 Billy Kupchak

if he is out 6 weeks he should be back by the 3rd round or finals

  25. Gravatar Icon 25 Sako

Bynum out for 6 weeks? It’s just a rumor on a Laker forum. Nothing about it on ESPN.com or Yahoo! Sports. So I declare this “Out for 6 weeks” as BS until it’s proven a fact.

I think the Lakers need to look to trade Bynum this summer. He has a weak body and can’t be counted on to carry a franshise. Trade him for the #1 pick and draft Beasley.

WELL,SO MUCH FOR OUR PLAYOFFS HOPES. pHIL DOESN’T PLAY OUR ONLY OTHER DEFENSIVE WEPONS SINCE BYNUM AND ARIZA ARE OUT. Are defense is so soft its disgusting. Yet we continue not to play Mbenga and Newble, well documented defenders. I’m just gonna look forward the enxt year. i guess there is some relief knowing that we have no shot at a ring this year. Pau makes zero impact on the defensive end.

  33. Gravatar Icon 33 Angelo Vergara

I heard Kurt Rambi on PMS and he said Bynum doesn’t havea ny confidence in his knee and is still mentally not ready. He may not have much impact even if he does make for the playoffs. I say we shelve him for next season and use his roster spot for a defensive minded player like newble or bhenga.

btw, I was just kidding about trading Bynum. But he is a very slow healer. Imagine if he had a torn ACL, he would be out a couple years maybe.

  40. Gravatar Icon 40 Bynum_2008

    MAn WTF??????????

i thought he was gonna come bak in the first round…we need some good trainers…everytime we are in a good postion our players get hurt…

how come other players dont get hurt such as STEVE NASH, CHRIS PAUL, I nevA Seen NASH GETTING HURT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Its always with the LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!

    we need GOOD CONDITIONING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. Gravatar Icon 41 sepehr

He’ll come back before the 2nd round but I dont think he can play good offensively. Defensively though he can clog up the lane and block a couple shots.

Here We GO! You can tell who are the true Laker fans and those who just come out when the Lakers are doing good and the moment something bad happens people start asking for trades and talking about next season. Pretty much giving up! It’s cool to be frustrated by all of these injuries. Believe me! I am too. But never to the point where I want to give up on my team or any of its players.

First of all, the Lakers or not done for the season yet! Lets have some hope everyone. First of all we have to keep in mind that newspapers are part of the media and they will put any headline as long as it sells. Besides, where or who on the article said anything about 6 weeks? Let’s wait until it’s official. Regardless, Mihm is going to be a huge help and most importantly, as we have seen before, with Kobe on the team, anything is possible! Go Lakers!

  48. Gravatar Icon 48 Keep Odom

The following was printed on ESPN.com Today:

“This should not be seen as a setback in any way,” said Dr. David Altcheck, who examined Bynum on Wednesday. “Andrew will continue his therapy program and workouts with the Lakers’ training staff and will continue to be monitored until he can return to playing status.”

No target date has been given for Bynum’s return, though he has been widely expected to miss the team’s final two regular-season games and return sometime during the playoffs.

    GO LAKERS!

  49. Gravatar Icon 49 Ryan.G

Man I hope these rumors are not true. We are most definitely going to need Bynum’s defensive presence if anything for a short amount of minutes in the playoffs. I believe we will get a better look at whats going to happen after Sundays game against the Spurs.

this is bullcrap! ANOTHER 6 weeks?!?!? oh c’mon, I’m sure Bynum’s injury is not THAT bad! I want to see this kid play already! He himself wants to come back badly too, LET THE BIG GUY PLAY SOME BASKETBALL ALREADY!!!

  52. Gravatar Icon 52 gugy

    B I T C H!

    We need Bynum. Lakers D is a S H I T!

    Bring Artest next season!!!!!!!!!!!!

  53. Gravatar Icon 53 DCLAKER

I’ve talked to my Laker colleagues here in DC and we all agree…….NO ARTEST,PLEASE!

Jason Williams(just to help DF and teach JF how to Slash to the rack)

Mickael Pietrus or Jamario Moon(we need some Dunkers and they both play HELLA-DEFENS

It doesn’t have to be THESE players per se but The Lakers could use guys who love going to the rack more,ATTACKERS so that defenses bite and try to double team. We have too many guys shooting and living off of 3 pointers,WE ARE NOT GOLDEN STATE!

  54. Gravatar Icon 54 Lakers2410

…wow…I just don’t want to believe this at all…and I don’t believe it, I really don’t! I’m sticking with my prediction of him being back by playoff time, he’ll get warmed up as we face either the Nuggets or Mavs, then in the 2nd round…well…let’s just say I wonder if the Spurs, Suns and the rest of the other teams including the Celtics have done their prayers…Trust me on this guys, just stay positive, he’ll be back for playoff time.

  55. Gravatar Icon 55 Rinnegato

Either Phil is playing one of the greatest mind games over everybody, or the trainers/doctors working with Bynum AND Ariza are screw-ups…
