Remember the 2000 Lakers team won 67 games, 2 less than the franchise record. Wilt and West may have won 33 straight, but Kobe, Shaq, and Rice won a respectable 30 of 31 games.

yes it might be. but you have to look back at the start of the century and see the Lakers' roster.
they had:
O' Neal - self explanatory
Bryant - DUH
Rice - All Star MVP just 3 years back (from 2000)
Harper - Defense, Championship experience, some offense
AC Green - truth is, i am iron man
Horry - Horry
Fish - Fish
George - has the best seat in Staples, oh wait, is he a player?
Salley - uhhmmm, let me see, dunno, a ring maybe.
Shaw - Former 3 point record holder
Lue - Iverson's rug.
Knight - tall
Celestand - who?
Fox - Fox
Jacobson - another who.

The 2001 Lakers didn't win 69 games, they won 56 wins, one less than this years team. They were the best of the Shaq/Kobe era though and a 15-1 playoff record is ridiculous. If it wasn't for the 2 week layoff they would have been 15-0.

This current team is deeper, and has better chemistry than the shaq/kobe teams. They also played in a much more competitive western conference than the shaq/kobe teams. Kobe is also better and so are our role players. If we had Gasol the entire season we would have won 65+ games. I would pick this team to win in a 7 games series over the shaq/kobe ones.

whether this team will be better than the Shaq era team will depend on 3 factors:

1: Bynum being able to play and maintain the level of consistency he showed earlier this year

2: Bynum being able to coexist in the front court with Gasol

3: Lamar being able to adapt to SF position when Bynum comes back and Gasol moving to PF

4: Kobe being able to stay in his prime.

I think the most important factor for Lakers is start searching for a viable successor to Kobe at the SG position because once Kobe retires (or declines), we become pretty weak in our backcourt. Maybe we can use try to make a run for Lebron to succeed Kobe?

I've been saying that for a while now. I think the current Lakers are better than the Shaq era Lakers. It will take time and titles to prove that but I already think so. And when you add Bynum back to the formula, the team is only stronger still.
