League acknowledges Barry was fouled

If they’re watching the replay, wouldn’t they see that technically Barry traveled first? Oh well, the league claims a foul should’ve been made…

ESPN: The league office on Wednesday reviewed the final play of the San Antonio Spurs’ 93-91 home loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals and acknowledged that a two-shot foul should have been called on Derek Fisher for impeding Brent Barry.

After falling behind by seven points in the final minute, San Antonio sliced the deficit to two and regained possession with 2.1 seconds to play.

Barry then wound up with the ball in the center of the floor on a play called for Manu Ginobili and faked Fisher in the air but struggled to get off a 3-point heave at the buzzer after Fisher came down and bumped Barry.

“With the benefit of instant replay, it appears a foul call should have been made,” league spokesman Tim Frank said Wednesday.

The miss sealed an L.A. victory that moved the Lakers into a commanding 3-1 series lead entering Thursday’s Game 5 at Staples Center.

But the Spurs did not protest the non-call afterward, even though a foul called before the shot would have sent Barry to the line for two free throws and a chance to force overtime.

The non-call nonetheless generated more than the usual scrutiny because the closest referee to the play was Joey Crawford, with whom San Antonio has a contentious recent history.

    oh well we still won!

I don’t have anything wrong with them coming out and saying a foul should have been called, because I agree. However, why do they only come out with that part? Why leave out that Fish’s shot hit the rim the play before and the Lakers should have had a fresh 24?

Oh and why doesn’t this guy get a fine for complaining about the refs? Had anyone on the Spurs said this it would have been an automatic fine.

There are dozens of plays this season similar to Brent Barry’s fate. Refs just don’t call fouls towards the end of games. Just doesn’t happen. I don’t like it but that’s reality.

    I KNEW IT ALL ALONG

I think the league should also acknowledge that there was a missed travel call at the end of the first quarter when Duncan traveled on his way for his slam dunk, thus taking those 2 points away from the Spurs.

I think the league should acknowledge that LO’s block on Tony Park was a clean block and not a goal tend, thus the 2 points given to the Spurs taken back.

And someone already mentioned the fresh 24 shot clock the Lakers should’ve been given with 5.2 seconds left in the game as Fisher’s shot hit the rim, went out of bounds off of Horry, and to the Lakers.

Let’s face it, any Spurs fan who b*tch about the non-call at the end needs to acknowledge the many calls that went their way.

since when do league offcials come out and say this? when it deals with the lakers?

    wtf? !

I totally agree Lakersfirst, also Spurs had Way more calls called for them, Kobe not shooting one freethrow attempt is outrageous. Averaging less than 2 a game is wrong, they get all the calls, we just play better

No sk, they’ve done it before. Remember the Miami / Hawks game? They replayed that game after acknowledging their was a foul error on Shaq. Also, they came out and acknowledged a mistake the refs made with the shot clock in the Orlando / Pistons series. So it only makes sense that they do the same now.

As far as Fisher’s shot, they probably didn’t look at that because it wasn’t brought to their attention. The big play with Barry was magnified because it was the final play of the game, and there was controversy over the contact. It was obvious there was contact, but the refs swallowed their whistles, thus the controversy.

yeah, doesn’t the league have anything else better to do like, enforcing kids to now play 2 years of college ball before entering into the draft? Of course Derek bumped Barry, but a no call was what happened and the league should just shut their pie hole and let it be. If they were going to comment about that then they should definitely make an equally strong statement about Fisher’s shot grazed the rim and then went off of Horry. That would allow the Lakers to imbound the ball and then the Spurs would have to foul probably Kobe and put him on the line for 2. It’s totally irresponsible for them to only make a comment about the Fisher/ Barry no call and not acknowledge the grazing the rim and the reset of the 24 sec clock.

Is this only Tim Frank, or is this truly the league’s hard stand, sh*ting on themselves, promoting this claim, as to cause a controversy about one play after the fact. If so, then to have any sense of credibility, they must do this across the board on all controversial calls. … Especially, when these types of non-calls are prevalent at the end of every quarter, let alone, at the end of the game. … All they are doing, is sh*ting on their own credibility by picking and choosing certain bad calls over others. A bad call is a bad call, all day and all night! … Why didn’t the league come out and sh*t on themselves in the 2006 Finals when replay CLEARLY showed MANY BAD CALLS. … Why? … Because as far as this league is concerned, the disdain towards Mark Cuban was so much stronger than the need for fair play. … So as to come out now and claim this f*cked up talk, only goes to show, how CLEARLY f*cked up the people who run this league, really are.

Well.. I guess it makes up for the No Travel called on Duncan’s Dunk in the 2nd quarter. He dunked from a freethrow line without even dribbling..

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 dub824

fouls on gamewinning/gametying plays have happened many times.. they never called them before.. why call them now

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 KB24MVP

The NBA league office has only come out 2 times this year and said that A foul should have been called Both Having to do with D Fish.. last night against the Spurs and about 2 months ago on the Final play against Golden State Monta Ellis was charged with an offensive foul against Fish and the League Later ruled that it should have been a blocking foul on Fish.. They only rule that the wrong call was made when The Lakers are involved Last night’s game was officiated so much in favor FOR the Spurs that it’s embarrassing for the league

And Brent Barry took 3 steps before he took a dribble that’s TRAVELING
    NO FOUL

  16. Gravatar Icon 16 Mr. Juan / Your Warlock

Yeah, KB24MVP is right! … Brent did do the bunny hop, never establishing a pivot foot, hopping from one foot to another, while Fisher was in the air and before putting the ball on the ground. (3 to 4 steps)… Yes, traveling actually occurred-(maybe 3 or 4 steps)-before anything else did.

If the league is going to come out and say something was not called, then they should also mention the other violations the refs missed throughout the game, consistency please!

I guess it’s a mean to please the SAS fans, after this statement best thing they can do is say at least the league recognized their mistake.

  21. Gravatar Icon 21 gugy

Sure, It was a foul, but also Derek shot touched the rim, so the Lakers should have a new 24 and this would not happen in the first place.

    One bad call deserves another.

    Let’s close this series tonight!

  22. Gravatar Icon 22 HereWeGo

why dont they say that the refs missed the travel on duncan or when derek’s shot hit the rim the play before barrys but it was ruled an air ball. wutever. the lakers won, the spurs lost. stop bittching. kobe takes 29 shots and doesnt get ONE call. ridiculous.

  23. Gravatar Icon 23 vintij

I told you it should have been two shots, the lakers were out of fouls. Either way, the NBA should rewind the tape about 5 seconds before the no call and announce what they see on the fisher shot? How about that?

  24. Gravatar Icon 24 double

Did the league acknowledge Fishers shot hitting the rim??? ESPN always exploits the drama, even after the members involved have moved on. They’re like the US Weekly of sports.

What’s more important is the Spurs acknowledgement of being outplayed in this series. They know they can’t fall on that no-call as THE reason their down 3-1. After all, they did blow a 20 point advantage in game 1 and pretty much lost any leverage to make excuses.

I HAVE ONE THING TO SAY ABOUT THIS NON SENSE ISSUE
” ONE BAD CALL DESERVE ANOTHER “

Once again, the “league office” shows that they are idiots.
