ESPN: Gilbert Arenas lived up to his word and opted out of the final year of his contract, the Washington Wizards said Monday.
The move had been long expected. Arenas has repeatedly said he would forgo the final year of his six-year, $65 million deal so that he could re-sign with the team for an even larger amount.
Arenas can begin negotiating with any team on July 1. While he has expressed a desire to remain with the Wizards, he has also said he won’t return unless the team also re-signs Antawn Jamison, who is also set to become a free agent.
Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld has said he wants to re-sign both Arenas and Jamison.
Arenas, a three-time All-Star, missed most of last season after two operations on his left knee. He has averaged 22.8 points,

Hah! The most the Lakers have to offer is the MLE, there’s no way Arenas would take that kind of money when he’s looking to get a max deal in his prime. Love Gil, but that is not even remotely a possibility.

I think that the Lakers would be worse (hard to imagine that now) because Agent Zero lusts to score and we already have Kobe, Pau, Odom and soon to be Bynum. Naw…maybe sign him and trade him to another team for a reasonable group of players. Farmar and Fish are all we need to run the point and Agent Zero would need to learn the triangle and thats one of the hardest offences to run.

If Arenas wants to win and would take less money, then there is an opportunity that he could become a laker. Other wise, we don’t need him.

Our three biggest improvements this past year was getting rid of Smush Parker, Kwame Brown and Brian Cook.
I’m looking for similar huge improvents after this season when we get rid of Smush Walton and Vlad. (And if pothead Lame-ar doesn’t wake up I’d give him the boot too.) After seeing the total lack of aggressiveness in the finals I’ve seen the light. We should sign ARTEST.

There is no way in H E L L that we can afford to extend Bynums contract, vujachic contrac, pay kobe 29 million, odom 15 million, gasol 14 million, radman 5 million, luke 4 million, and still have enough cap room to pay arenas his expected asking price of 20 million. You people are retarded. And no, we can not trade for him without giving up gasol, or odom and a role player. So stop dreaming, we have our team, no significant changes will be made for the next 5 years other than extending contracts.
