TLN’s Finals Preview: Lakers vs. Celtics [Game 4]

Putting Kobe on Rondo? Brilliant (Why didn’t Phil do this earlier?).

Kobe defending Eddie House the same way he defended Rondo? Not so much.

As much as we laud Kobe as a great defender, he does not do screens well. To be fair to Kobe, if the screen involved Garnett then in most instances it was an illegal one… but still.

LD2k posted an article from RedsArmy (a Celtics blog), which claimed that Pierce>Kobe, and I wanted to get my two cents in.

The main claim of the article was that Pierce has similar career numbers to Kobe but shoots a better percentage, and that this was being exemplified in the Finals (this was before Game 2).

It’s certainly an interesting debate. I personally don’t think there’s much merit to the discussion though… Not to take anything away from Pierce (he’s a fantastic talent) but as far as statistical similarities go, Shareef Abdur-Rahim (I know, who?) is a career 18/8 guy but nobody compares him to Gasol even though Gasol is also a 18/8 guy.

“Their Finals numbers look a lot like their career numbers: Pierce is averaging a couple of points less while taking fewer shots and shooting a higher percentage.”

That’s a misleading statement, because while it (was) true for the Finals, it’s not true for their career numbers.

For his career Pierce is averaging 23/6.5/4 on 44.2% shooting, while Kobe is averaging 25/5/4.5 on 45.3% shooting. In the playoffs (as of Game 3), he is averaging 18/4.5/4 on 45% shooting while Kobe is averaging 30/4/5 on 46.3% shooting.

And in case you didn’t get the discrepancy, Pierce is shooting a lower percentage.

On a side note: Lakers fans, please do not troll that blog, as it is not worth your time. :-)

Marquee Matchups -

Point Guard - Derek Fisher vs. Ray Allen: This is actually a good matchup for the Lakers, because Fisher either fights through screens, or he knows how and when to cheat them effectively. I don’t know if we can call it a total success as Allen was the only “Big Three” to go off, but this is a lot better than Kobe watching Allen drain a 3-pointer from the other side of the court

Advantage: Celtics, though not by much.

Shooting Guard - Kobe Bryant vs. Rajon Rondo: Maybe next year Rondo will have a reliable jumper and we won’t be able to double off him (next year we’ll have Bynum and then that’ll be all she wrote). However, until then, Rondo being “guarded” by Kobe is good for us, as not only does it allow Kobe to play free safety, but it creates a cross match on the defensive end which helps us in our transition offense.

Oh, and Rondo is injured too, although that really means nothing if you’re a Celtics player.

Advantage: Lakers.

Small Forward - Vladimir Radmanovic vs. Paul Pierce: Vladdy is boneheaded on defense and airheaded on offense, but yet we struggle with him out of the line-up. It will be imperative that Vladdy limits Paul Pierce from going off early in the game, as any kind of momentum for Pierce could get his “adrenaline” pumping and help him to cope with his “injury” better.

Advantage: Celtics.

Power Forward - Lamar Odom vs. Kendrick Perkins: What does Odom have to do to be effective in Game 4? Beyond developing a jump shot , he should get involved in screen and rolls, pick and rolls, anything that involves him either screening or having a screen placed for him. I can’t believe I haven’t seen more of this in games this season, as Odom slipping a screen should, at least theoretically, leave either Garnett or Perkins stranded on the perimeter, and that’s a good thing! If he were to be screened for, imagine how many less offensive fouls he’d pick up!

Beyond that, he’ll need to play D and “grab all the f-king rebounds” (We miss you, Bynum!).

Advantage: Lakers.

Center - Pau Gasol vs. Kevin Garnett: Garnett is only shooting 35% percent? He’s taking 20 shots a game? Why are we hearing about how great he is then?

Because he rebounds.

Not because he plays great defense, which he does, because Gasol is doing a number on him too (again, 35%). No, Garnett is being heralded for “imposing his will on the game” because he grabs 13 rebounds a night while Gasol is only managing… Well Gasol is averaging 10, but you’d never know it the way we complain about him.

On a side note, Gasol played really, really well in Game 2, I believe that’s the most aggressive we’ve seen him in a Lakers jersey. I don’t know if he was poor in Game 3 because Perkins was guarding him and he couldn’t bang at all with him or not, but it was not a pretty sight. Thankfully, he looked pissed about it, while Garnett seemed almost complacent about his shooting performance.

Advantage: Lakers (I’m going with my gut on this one).

Bench -

Besides Sasha, Farmar had a nice game off the bench, getting a quite 5/4/5 in 20 minutes of action. Luke didn’t turn the ball over and Turiaf played pretty well against Garnett, only picking up 3 fouls in 18 minutes. Ariza still looked a bit rusty but he shot 2-3 from the floor in just under 9 minutes of play.

For Game 4, look for Sasha to be less deadly but for Farmar to step it up against a hobbled Rondo. For either Game 4 or Game 5 I’m hoping for a “Leon Powe” game from Ronny, but I’ll settle for Ariza. Haha!

Advantage: Lakers.

Statistical Predictions -

Alright, I’m going to keep track of statistical predictions for the Post-Season!

Here’s how it works, copy and paste the below and enter your picks instead, Closest prediction wins. Posts will only be accepted before the game starts, in this case 6:00 PM PST.

20+ Points: Kobe & Gasol.

10+ Rebounds: Lamar, Gasol.

2+ Blocks: Turiaf (it’s a foul on the road, but a block at home).

3+ 3-Pointers: Sasha.

Closest To A Triple-Double*: Gasol.

Point Margin: Lakers by 7.

Out On A Limb: Tim Donaghy shows up at the game, winks at all the cameras, and then gets into a fist fight with David Stern.

* a 20/10/6 will be considered closer than a 20/7/7 because player A is only short 4 assists while player B is short 3 rebounds and 3 assists, or 6 stat points in total, as opposed to 4 for plater A.

Game Information -

Radio: KLAC & KWKW.

Television: ABC.

Burning Questions -

Has Kobe dunked the basketball this series? He may have gotten one in Game 1, but I don’t really remember. He had a moment in the first quarter when he was getting ready to on the fast break, but Allen (wisely) fouled him in the act of shooting.

What is up with Kobe and Gasol’s FT%? They combined to make only 14 of 26. Some of Kobe’s free-throws were short too, and he’s usually pretty good at that. Then again, so is Gasol.

A lot of Celtic fans are harping on Kobe’s 1 assist. Did they not see all the hockey assists?

Any solid advice for Lamar on getting out of his finals funk? (As Flight of the Concords sing “other rappers diss me / say my rhymes are sissy / what, what, what, what / be more constructive with your criticism.)

    I thought this was interesting.

Forgive me, as it is completely off topic, but the 1 assist brought this to mind.

Michael Jordan is universally heralded for making his teammates “better”, something Kobe’s detractors say that he can’t do. For example, Celtics fans point to Kobe’s 1 assist as a sign that he’s obviously not moving or passing the ball. However, this could not be further from the truth.

Anybody who has played basketball, or watched it, can tell you that moving the ball leads to assists. Not always for you, but it leads to assists for teammates none the less. If Kobe was as selfish as some haters say he is, and if he really wasn’t passing to teammates, then Boston would have doubled him every time down the floor. However, they realized they couldn’t do that because #24 would willingly share the ball with the open man, and their defense would be scrambling and get burned. So, 1 assist doesn’t make him selfish in the least.

Secondly, a radio show recently claimed that Jordan would never shoot as badly as Kobe did in game 1, and only get to the line 6 times. That’s to say, Jordan has never had a bad shooting performance in the Finals like Kobe in game 1. Well, the stats tell a different story.

In a couple of games against Seattle in the 95-96 Finals Jordan shot 5-19 from the field, had a plethora a turnovers and only a couple of assists. In the same Finals series, he shot 6-19 and got to the line only 5 times.

Take it for what you will, again it is a little off topic, but I thought it correlated to Bryant’s one assist in a way.

Anyway, good pregame. I’ll be watching from Portland tomorrow, GO LAKERS!

Any solid advice for Lamar on getting out of his finals funk?

Lamar needs to be way more agreessive. And i hate to say it but he kinda needs to force the issue like kobe did in game 3, but he has to do it under control. and also he needs to do this for the whole game and not for like a 6 or 7 minute period. And he needs to stay out of foul trouble to keep his confidence up

game 4 is a MUST WIN GAME!!! let’s destroy those celtics like we did to san antonio!

“1. Before the 2000-01 season, Pierce was stabbed 11 times at a Boston nightclub, suffered a collapsed lung and nearly bled to death while staggering to the hospital. Less than two weeks later, he played in Boston’s first exhibition game. If the same thing had happened to Vince Carter, he would still be on the injured list seven years later.

    2. During the 2002-03 season, Pierce got slammed face-first to the floor by Amare Stoudemire, breaking his two front teeth. Thirty minutes later, he was back playing with a mouthpiece. The following day, he underwent emergency dental surgery for seven hours. The day after that, he played against Portland with a mouthpiece and ended up hitting the game-winner.

In my opinion, he’s not only one of the toughest Celtics ever, he’s one of the toughest Boston athletes ever.”

I completely agree with this article, pierce may be the hated one, but he is not a faker…..he is a great talent, possibly the second best celtic to ever play the game. I have much respect for him, despite that I still bleed laker purple and gold. Why is it so hard to give respect where it is due, yet so easy to talk trash? Especially for laker fans. Well, bandwagon fans if you ask me. A true fan knows the game and watches other players besides kobe bryant. Yes we get it, kobe is the greatest ball player of this generation (has a ways to go to even think about passing jordan) but does everyone have to do backflips on his nut sack? Can some respect go out to the other players on the laker squad? Or dare i say, other players on the other teams? Wake up laker fans, kobe is a laker, the lakers are not kobe.

kobe dunked one on an alley-oop from fisher in game 1. :P
and i TOTALLY AGREE! with garnett’s picks! …all of them are illegal! he’s been doing that since the piston series, it’s as if he grabs the defender for a split second, then “conveniently” runs at the same direction. >.<’ someone should raise this with the officials!

have YOU not watched the games? Garnett has disappeared on the offensive end ever since the second half of game 1. the difference between Gasol and KG after game 3 was that Gasol was pissed and KG seemed content to continue shooting jumpers, and that’s why i think Gasol is going to outplay KG in tonights game.

ultimately it’s a gut call, because even as i typed that out my argument seemed a little weak, but i stand by it

Kobe will go crazy and drive it into the basket a lot and grab another 30+ points

Odom and Gasol will have one of their best playoff games because they will learn from their mistakes

Sasha and farmar are going to the backup that will come in to hurt the celtics

Fisher will shoot a little better from the field

the defense of the team will be superb

lakers need to stop ray allen at the 3’s and they also need to keep paul pierce in a bubble and not let him out they gotta contain him and gasol has to do work on garnett other then that watch out for eddie house and his 3’s cuz those piss me off

Is it me or do Lakers fans seem weaker than Boston fans? I remember watching the first two games on a fixed volume (level 12) and it was hella loud. You couldn’t even hear the whistle at times. For Game 3, I used the same level but didnt really feel like Staples is loud enough. Plus, when are the Lakers gona give out free yellow t-shirts out to the fans so that it feels more intimidating here?!?

L.A. have too many passive/rich (especially the “movie stars”) who just sit back and relax. Lakers need a more energetic and vocal crowd to pump them up each game!

    SIMPLE SOLUTION FOR LAMAR:

he just needs to hit the bong before the game and play his smooth high game!!!

  25. Gravatar Icon 25 lalaland

pau will play better in game 4 and i say he has 25 and 12 game because kobe will get him the ball early and often. as for lamar being more aggresive he has been taking a lot of shots this series but foul trouble is messing him up. also rebounding wise who ever is on perkins is a ough match because perkins has 30+ pounds on both pau and lamar and both perkins and garnet are pushing off when rebounding. it seems like everytime they get an offensive rebound and they show the replay they are holding or pushing off and pj brown does the same thing. anyways the rebounding diff is not much the last 2 games and lakers will win tonight bya comfortable margin because the celtics are gonna start wearing down because of their age and all the games they have been playing.

Lamar….just shoot the 15-18 ft jumper and see what happens. You just might make them. Pau…toughen up. Vlad and Luke…call in sick! Maybe we should start Ronny at the PF and slide LO to the SF. Let Mihm back up Pau at the center position…how tough can PJ Brown be to guard. At least Mihm will try to block a shot. What do you say Phil? Win tonight or go fishing!

When comparing players it is not easy. Gasol does things that other players cant do. He made it difficult for Boozer and did an excellent job on Duncan and Garnett’s numbers would be ridiculous if not for Pau.

As far as Kobe and Pierce. The forget that Kobe has played defense on Rondo, Pierce and Gay Allen. Can pierce do that on the defensive end? Hell no!

Read in Hoopshype.com that Celts are favored and that the Lakers barely beat the Celts in Game 3 with PG and Pierce struggling mightily. Thy don’t see Pierce and KG struggling again the way they did and frankly, I don’t either. You can argue that Odom and Gasol struggled as well, but they’ve been off all series long, especially Odom.

That need to change tonight and on for the Lakers to win. Kobe and Sasha can’t beat the Celts themselves. Everyone, including the bench needs to step big time tonight. Vlad, Luke in addition to Odom, Gasol and Fish.

Hopefuly, the Machine keeps chuuggin away because we need his offense of the bench.

Play tough Lakers. 3 more to go baby!

I second the motion. We need Odom from the Utah series, when he took it to Boozer and the heart of the Jazz. We need the Pau who stuffed it in KG’s noggin in Game 2, but we need more of that. Aggressiveness, that’s what it’s gonna take, defense and offense.

A few outside shots and FTs would help too :)

One of my pet peeves about home games is the sixth man and im talking about the crowd. In My Opinion, they need to be Louder and keep being loud throughout the game. They usually dont get into it until the 4th or when the lakers are down and they make a shot to get closer to taking the lead. I mean its the FINALS! The players feed off from their energy and that is what the lakers need.

    Keys To Winning (IMO)
    1. Defense!
    2. Bench Scoring
    3. Gasol and Odom playing better
    4. Ball Movement

    5. Keep Luke Off the Court and use Ariza more lol
    6. Vlad needs to stop trying too hard because they = turnovers or
    bonehead plays

The fact of the matter is, offense gets the glory, but defense wins the game. We won Game 3 on hard-nosed, no-breathing-room-for-you-buddy type of defense. Consequently, the green team only shot 30%+. And when it comes down to it, our offense will beat their defense, as long as we attack attack attack. Kobe will never have a problem with this. However, Mr. LO has been quite unproductive these past 3 games, which worries me. Pau has claimed that he will have a monster game today, hopefully like the one we saw in Game 2’s 1st quarter performance.

Our key to winning today is to have production off the bench on both ends. Farmar, Sasha, Ronny, and the others (PJ has been rotating the starters and bench in ways we haven’t seen all season, which I like) need to step up when the Bostonians seem to let up with their bench. The attacking should never stop on the offensive end. On defense we should be attacking constantly, stepping into the passing lanes, and keeping our hands up. Therefore, we should sit out Smush Walton who appears scared every time he touches the ball. Put Trevor in. Maybe I’m a little biased because I’m a bruin, but heck, I can see Luke’s lackadaisical play in brail.

Last game, we won with heart, and a little help from our friend the Machine. Today, we need to not only beat them, we need to send a statement.

I miss Andrew Bynum’s post up game and offensive put backs. He was just growing up to becoming a young dominant center before he got injured …

Yes our finesse is good, but We need more muscle in the paint.

Pierce is great but he is not close to Bryant. This is probably how Jordan fans feel when we compare him to Jordan.

I really believe the Lakers can win all home games. If that indeed happen, we will win one in Boston and be the champions. But if the Lakers lose one at home, it is pretty much bye, bye.

I expect Gasol and Odom to play with heart tonight. Go lakers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SIMMONS ALSO MENTIONS THIS IN THIS ARTICLE ON ESPN:

Q: How do you tell the difference between a Grizzlies-Lakers game in January and a Celtics-Lakers game in June at the Staples Center?

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/080611

The loud and hyped up/rowdy Lakers fans cant really afford those games really, instead we get toby mcguire and david cook…..sad but true.

Couldn’t agree more. The Lakers are lacking physical players. Of all the series’ the Lakers have played during this playoff run, this is the series where they miss Bynum the most.

Jemele Hill: (6:21 PM ET ) Of course, there is truth to it. Kobe was cussing his teammates out in every huddle. So what? That’s what happens when you want to win, you get frustrated and your team isn’t giving you anything. If the Lakers lose this series, if I were Kobe, I’d run Lamar over in my Astin Martin.

I’ m SENDING THIS WARNING TO ALL SMELL-TICS FANS AND YOUR STANK ORGANIZATION,DON’T LET THIS BE IN THE FAVOR OF THE LAKERS 3-2,WE’LL BE CELEBRATING IN “LOSS-TON”,get it!

Really? Well, I never actually really thought that he was faking, you don’t cry to fake, I mean, I had a bond bruise in my right shin bone and sat out for like 5 minutes and then went right back onto the floor and went on to score like 6-10 points or something. It didn’t mean much whether I’d returned or not as it was just at school at recess, but I still wanted to come back and play just to win. After what you said, I think Pierce should never be called a faker, EVER (especially after what I read about him getting stabbed!)!

    Better luck next year Lakers.

  56. Gravatar Icon 56 Smush Walton

Has there been a worse playoff loss in Laker history?

    Devistating!

  57. Gravatar Icon 57 Big Phil

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK is wrong with you damn Lakers!!!! I’m am so F in PISSED. UNBELIEVABLE!!

This game CLEARLY showed who is the better team and I’m sorry but it’s Boston. The Lakers do NOT deserve the championship after this sorry-a$$ loss. THEY DO NOT DESERVE THE CHAMPIONSHIP. How absolutely pathetic is the showing of the Lakers in the 2nd half. EVERYONE DESERVES THE BLAME INCLUDING KOBE AND PHIL!!! F*CK! Lakers got complacent, out-hustled, out-muscled in the 2nd half…I’m so f in pissed. Everyone including Kobe settled for jumpers. I kept yelling: STOP SHOOTIN THE F’IN JUMPERS! AND VLAD..VLAD SHOULD BE KICKED OFF THE TEAM…WALTON SHOULD NOT BE IN THE NBA. LAKERS GOT SOFT in the 2nd half. F IN TERRIBLE. KOBE has no one to blame but himself with his crappy shot selection.

  58. Gravatar Icon 58 Smush Walton

We weren’t mentally tough. A total meltdown.

  59. Gravatar Icon 59 west213

F UCK U LAKERS!~!!!!!!!!!!!! F UCK FARMAR FOR STEALING FISHERS MINUTES AND F UCKIN ARE LEAD!!!!!F UCK PHIL FOR NOT PLAYING TREVORIN FORTH. F UCK ODOM FOR DISAPPEARING AGAIN. F UCK LAKERS HARDCORE

  60. Gravatar Icon 60 Big Phil

HOW CAN YOU F IN LOSE an 18-point lead going into the 3rd quarter?! PHIL COACHED ABSOLUTELY MISERABLY IN THE 3rd QUARTER. WHY DID U KEEP THE MORON SPACE CADET FOR SO LONG IN THERE! WHERE WERE THE TIMEOUTS to re-establish the OFFENSE and DEFENSE. All we did was shoot jumpers…no rotation, no moving, no passing…just one-on-one outside shots. Lakers dominated the first half because they were more aggressive, moved the ball around, and attacked the basket. WHY DO U KEEP LEAVING GUYS WIDE OPEN ON THE 3 POINT LINE?!!! SHIIIT FUUUUUUCK DAMN U GUYS for BECOMING PUUUUSSIES in the 2nd half.

TIME TO CLEAN OUT THE GARBAGE…WALTON, VLAD, MIHM, FARMAR need to GO…GET ARTEST OR BARON DAVIS….
