Stein believes Lakers will pursue Artest

Mark Stein of ESPN believes the Lakers will pursue Artest…

ESPN: Q: So are the Lakers really going to pursue Ron Artest as part of that rebound?

A: I believe so. Let’s face it. The Lakers are suddenly answering to a “soft” label and have undeniable defensive and toughness issues on the perimeter that Pierce repeatedly exploited. Factor in Jackson’s proven ability to handle personalities like Artest, Artest’s friendship with Bryant and the Lakers’ known interest in acquiring him before Gasol’s arrival and the Sacramento swingman becomes a natural target.

If we get him, it would be as a free agent. There is no way in hell Sacramento would trade him to us.

Didn’t his same article say that he got an email from Artest that he absolutely will not accept the MLE?

  8. Gravatar Icon 8 goodfella

    Get Artest

  9. Gravatar Icon 9 xxv112002

Yeah, there was an email from Artest saying he wants to stay until his final contract expires so he can look for a better offer than the MLE. So I guess that means even when we trade for Artest, as soon as his contract expires he will look for a larger contract and that also means the Lakers will be waaay over the cap space. Really hard to balance contracts of multiple star players on one team.

Also I think Artest will also explore the Texas teams most prefferably San Antonio Spurs. After the loss, Spurs were rumored to seek for a forward to help Tim Duncan (since Robert Horry is about to retire). So if the Spurs acquire Artest, that means were screwed! Oh, and Artest wants to play for a contender as he stated last year.

So I guess it all comes down to 3 teams. Lakers (if they’re creative enough to acquire him), Maverics (trade Josh Howard), or Spurs.

Artest followed up our Tuesday interview with an e-mail Thursday in which he said: “Even if I was to opt out, which probably won’t happen, I will never accept a mid-level exception. So people trying to figure out possibilities should get that out of their heads.”

Get real on Artest… He is a high risk player… therefore the lakers should give very little for him… and it looks like he wants to be paid about 10 million a yr. This guy has so many problems that I wouldn’t put hope in him.

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 pr0mega

The last thing we need is a bad ego on this team to muck up all that we built last year. The locker room is super tight and things are smooth. Artest is a hit or miss kind of guy, I wouldnt want to take a chance and spend a ton of money on that guy.

All of them would be good as long as we get the ship.

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 lakerfan81

Not a good idea. Artest is blackhole on offense. He doesn’t run any offense, takes bad shots, has propensity to dribble too much. Yes he can be a good defender but he has never bought into any kind of offensive system and I don’t see him starting too just because hes playing for the Lakers. The triangle is a bad fit for him. And I don’t buy the idea that Kobe and Phil can make him a team player.

I don’t think its a good idea. I think the Lakers should at least see how the team plays with a fully healthy line up. Fans are over reacting because of how the Lakers lost (personally I just think they met a better team, and by the time they got to game 5 they were exhausted both physically and mentally).

forget artest, forget rj, forget getting another star player, this team is fine as it is, we haven’t even seen the three giants play together yet, lets hold off on the panicking at least until they step on the court together. or with bynum off the bench, whatever, the point is we haven’t seen this roster at its full potential so everyone needs to calm down and think.

there is no doubt that the lakers have an interest in him, but to me there is like a slim to none chance that we would land him. i mean everyone in the entire nba would have to be drunk for the lakers to sign him. we dont have the money and even if we offered him somethin, i wouldnt be surprised if other teams would offer him something better.

there is so much talk about ron artest coming to the lakers. sure, its simple enough, all he has to do is opt out of his current contract and sign with the lakers for much less salary but it does come with a much better chance of winning a championship. i dont know what he is gonna do but im sure the lakers will pursue artest because the coaching staff, kobe, and odom are very fond of his talents especially on the defensive end.

if we were able to add artest to the roster and keep vujacic and turiaf, we would have a complete team. also, we can definitely use some more size up front in terms of another veteran PF and another shooter/ballhandler/defender.

the rumors of odom for jefferson is out there, but i would rather keep odom and see what he can do along with pau and a healthy returning bynum. “BIG” front court hands down! thats literally a “BIG 3″ plus a guy named kobe “MVP” bryant haha.

    BOTTOM LINE:

    1. re-sign vujacic/turiaf
    2. acquire veteran PF, SG or PG
    3. TRY to acquire artest, which im sure the lakers will do regardless, his presence would be HUGE for us
    4. keep the same team as best possible, team is good enough, just need the following tweaks mentioned above

  26. Gravatar Icon 26 Fantastic5LAL

RJ and 2nd rd pick (DJ White, Joey Dorsey, or Kyle Weaver)

    Resign Sasha

    Resign Turiaf

    DeMarcus Nelson with 58 pick

If Artest doesn’t opt out, and assuming that the Lakers won’t trade Odom, is there anyone else the Lakers could deal to get Artest? Don’t say Walton or Vlade because no way Sacramento takes any of these guys.

similar to odom’s stats…but seriously you guys look at stats too much…maybe marion got those stats because of the horrible defense his teams played? odom is a REBOUNDER type player…and we NEED someone like him…so i say KEEP LAMAR!

  34. Gravatar Icon 34 chantha

I think we should get a player who can play defend. Lamor and Paul can;t play defend and are soft. Bynum play defend that good. If they play in the final next year again the boston they will loose again and I am a laker fan. Fisher too old. What do you think they have what it take to be a championship, get real man. Did you watch the whole series against boston, and that somehow they will win it all next year. your dreaming. They have to get someone who can play defend. They don’t have that except for Kobe.

Ps Don’t fall in love with nice player, fall in love with someone who can block shot, play defend, and give it all every game. They don’t have that right now. What say you.

I say if ron really wants to play for us, he’ll surely opt out and cut his salary. Otherwise, that means he’s really a guy who wants money, nothing less, nothing more. So, if we cant get this guy, there are so many SFs in the league who plays defense as well..There are guys like Shane Battier (is his surname spelled correctly?), Tauyshaun prince, Kelena Azubukie, Mikael Pietrus, and many more.

Just dont give too much expectation for this guy, but im not telling you to believe that we’ll get him. In fact, id be one of the people who will jump like i was out of my head when we get him.

All the lakers need now is to:

    a. Resign sasha and ronny.
    b. Get rid of Chris Mihm, Vlad or/and Luke (in particular order)
    c. Get another veteran PF. (should be defensive minded)
    d. Improve the overall team defense especially against three pointers and for the big guys, learn to rebound and block.

    GOODLUCK LAKERS!!!
    BEAT EVERYONE!!!

  41. Gravatar Icon 41 FontanaLakerFan

Artest would be a great pick-up, yet I feel if we cannot get him, Odom would be great off the bench. I would start Ariza in the SF spot and have Odom come of the bench. Maybe Radman would play better off the bench and if we pick up a great mid-level player, he can help off the bench as well.
