The Lakers selected Joe Crawford from the University of Kentucky, with the 58th overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft.
Crawford is 6′4 and 217lbs. As a senior at Kentucky he averaged 17.9 ppg, 2.1 apg, and 3.6 rpg. He also shot 36% from beyond the arc.

Lakers probably will start season with 15 on roster

Can he play defense?
hes good trust me
DAMN BAD DAY BORING ASSS DRAFT I WANTED CDR..BUT UMM HOPEFULLY THIS IZ GOOD
he is a tall guard and that what phil likes
Making up for trading Jcritt. Tall guard. Something Phil loves. Comes from a basketball powerhouse in Kentucky.
So will coby stay with lakers next season ?
agreed very boring and prolly be in the d league though
WHAT A WASTE IN MYLIFE,{Profanity isn't allowed on theLakersNation.com -- Please go back and edit your comment. Thank you.}ES
IF Sun Yue decides to come play this season… is there room on this team for Joe?
Boy can jump go youtube him, he has some crazy hops
Joe Crawford starting PG for the lakers.
thats not him in the 1st pic
THAST A PIX OF PATRICK PATTERSON
BOOOOOO!
Kentucky fan here. You got a good one.. boy can score like mad.. although I guess he’s backing up the best scoring player in the world now, so it’s all relative. That picture isn’t Joe, btw, that’s our starting PF Patrick Patterson. He’ll be a lottery pick next year.
This guy will never see the court good luck in the d league…
I don’t think he’s gonna get any minutes. We all know Phil. He’ll get limited minutes in his rookie year, and play for the D-Fenders most of the time. Maybe we got him so we can have somebody to fall back on if Sasha doesn’t re-sign.
Either way… I can’t wait to see the guy play in the Summer League along with Coby.
When does the Summer League start? Where do the Lakers play?
Interesting pick. Def. has a lot of potential and solid grounds for becoming a pro. I liked what I saw when I did, and unfortunately, I didn’t get to really see much of him to scout for an opinion… but… I really love the idea of a combo guard that already has a “scoring” label attached to him. Answers questions for our future, and secures a future alongside our other prospects.
JOE CRAWFORD SHOULD HAVE BEEN A LOTTERY PICK!! He came out a Mcdonalds all american… he has mad hops and can shoot the trey with the best of them….. Give him and chance and hes gonna shine… his stock went down cuz he played at kentucky and they never have a go to guy… tubby shut him down… if he played somewhere else you would know exactly who he was….
Well, he’s been scouted as an all around solid guy, and athletic. And after 4 years at Kentucky, he’ll probably be more likely to make the team and contribute right away.
What teams did Hill and Dorsey end up going to?
I love that the kid has a great NBA body.
summer pro league is in vegas at the end of july/early august.
LAKERS = nba champs 2009.
his numbers r good but shouldnt we have gotten a big man?
I think hes a very good pick!
He will fight with coby karl and perhaps Sun Yue (if he looks good in the Olympics I would expect Kupchak to try and bring him over) for the last roster spot. I expect the Lakers to only have 14 guaranteed contracts going into the season, that way they can sign a FA if one becomes available.
He is actually similar to Critt, without the quickness but does has a good jumper. He can be a great asset down the line. Lets keep getting better guys

This guy reminds me a little of Baron Davis without the beared.
Just took a look at his ‘game log’ from last season. This guy can really put up some scoring.
Lakers should of traded ffor Joey Dorsy, he’s wht we need at backup center
“Crawford is a tough player who helped the Wildcats squeeze into the NCAA tournament, although he has limited shooting range.”

?
Didnt he shoot 36% from long range last season? How is his range limited?
“I don’t see Crawford ever wearing a Lakers uniform, but at No. 58, what do you expect? ”
Grade: A (b/c we got Gasol for our 28th pick)

36% college 3’s not equivalent to NBA long range
Offensively, he can ALWAYS work on his game.
But I think what people are missing is two things:
- Experience
- Attitude
The dude WANTS the ball, I think he might even have a bit of a killer instinct. Didn’t he drop 38 in one game? I have to check up but I like what I see.
I updated the post with some other tidbits about it. Seems like a SOLID pickup. I’m all smiles.

Jordan is still shopping Gerald Wallace and…….Nuthin’,c’mon Mitch! At least try.
We at LAKERNATION need to know if Vlad is going to be with ’cause if so I probably go an attempt to hang myself multiple times, seeings though that would be more enjoyable than watching this guy in a Laker uniform another year….and PLEASE DON’T GIVE ME THAT CONTRACT CRAP EITHER,LAKERS WENT TO THE FINALS they have money to get Vlad off this team and to another one,PIETRUS,WALLACE AND UDONIS,take your pick.
why do you like Pietrus so much?
lol . . . contract crap = reality
“have money to get vlad off team” - as in buyout? ok, assume hes bought out - his contract still counts against cap, which means u still only have MLE, LLE, and vet min.s to obtain free agents with
so y would LAL buy him out, still have him count against cap, and then pay another player the MLE/LLE/vet min.? Illogical - except for the fact that ur hatred for him is personal - makes no business sense
If you want one of those other players, then just suggest LAL sign one or all to MLE/LLE/vet min.
By the way, players that belong to other teams have to be traded for - last i checked, it takes at least two willing partners, not kool-aid fans.
EHH.. 58TH PICK. EVEN IF HE MAKES THE TEAM, PHIL AINT GONNA PLAY HIM. HE BARELY PLAYED JAVARIS.
Daboss1848,If you had the chance to get…let’s say Mickael Pietrus(if you haven’t seen him,go to YOUTUBE),you can’t sit here and tell me you wouldn’t jump at the chance and get’em,if you say NO…..LIAR,LIAR PANTS ON FIRE,hahahahaha!
WEDON’TNEEDVLAD.com,Mitch,on Monday you gotta get Vlad outta LA…….The Blazers will not be FAKIN’ THIS SEASON!
yes i would - missed point . . .
That’s what I’m talkin”bout,your a good man.
If he can shoot and play some good defense then I think we just need to get his weight up to maybe 235 or 240 so the big boys won’t push him around. I wish him a great year on the best team in the Uh, Western Conference!

i dont think he can get a contract too many guards on the roster.the lakers need a 3 spot.trade odom now!for marion, ron artest, gerald wallace,jr,caron just trade him forget his length we need talent and defense, not a crappy who doesnt made a lay up!
Fantastic5LAL,the reason why I like Pietrus so( and this goes out to ALL LAKERNATION)because he’s everything Vlad and Luke are not….and THAT’S AGGRESSIVE!This guy reminds me so much of ” Big Game “James Worthy that it’s ridiculous.Like I said many times,I’m probably the oldest on this site so when I say this or that guy would be perfect for this team,I KNOW THEY WOULD BE A PERFECT FIT.
Everybody(well, not everybody)wants Artest,Sh%$,I do too but he can’t make up his mind on whether he wants to opt out or not.I say forget’em for now,HELL,at least JO came out last year in August and said “I’d love to be a Laker”,THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKIN”BOUT,Artest wants a hug,C’mon Artie please come to the Lakers,PLEASE,PRETTY PLEASE!REAL LAKERS DON’T BEG NOBODY TO JOIN,EITHER YOU IN OR YOU OUT!
….and that’s the reason, plus,he’s cheaper(around 3,ooo,ooo) and he won’t be a problem at the end of next when it’s to negotiate contract structure…..OH!5LAL,CHECKOUT youtube and type ‘Mickael Pietrus highlight reel ‘07-’08′ AND YOU’LL OVERSTAND WHY!!!
I’m normally optimistic but the more I think about this pick, the less I’m happy about it. In fairness it was a 58th pick.
I don’t think he has any upside. Some ppl say he’s a tall PG or is a combo guard, but I think he’s a small SG if any. I see him as a fred jones type of player which is okay but nothing really special. The only thing I’m curious about is if he’s any good defensively.
He could be our version of Stuckey from Detroit.Tayshaun Prince,Rondo,Kelenna Azubuike are from Kentucky and I think that’s why they decided to get’em.Gotta give’em a shot,I hope he makes the team.
“When the day started I was really nervous,” Crawford said. “Then to go to one of my favorite teams in L.A, I can’t explain it (the feeling).”
Well, Joey since there are only 2 teams in LA, I’m certainly glad we are “one of your favorite teams in LA.” LOL - and this is a four-year guy.
This kid is rated anywhere b/w 80 and 100 on several top 100 college hoop players sites - usually equating with a 0 star. Let’s hope he doesnt waste this tremendous opportunity.
Mitch Kupchak was heard on his cell phone after making the Crawford pick saying “Hey Kobe, tell me how my draft tastes.” The Lakers gave up their first-rounder (pick No. 28 overall) in the infamous Pau Gasol trade. So aside from losing in the finals, he has to be pleased. Joe Crawford, no not the referee, had a standout Orlando draft-camp performance, and could potentially find a spot on the roster.
