This is an interesting topic. Robert Horry recently came out and said some great things about his own career, how he wants to go out and when he wants to retire. Basically, he’s ready to give it another go and wants to contribute more than leaving his career on a playoff ‘DNP’ decision. And with that, Horry is set to become a free agent July 1.
There is no question the miles have added up over the years. In fact, no other player in NBA history has played in more NBA post-season games than Horry. However, Rob is indisputably the definition of clutch and most certainly is more than valued within the city of Angels. While I personally feel it shouldn’t be priority #1 for the Lakers, if potential-FA players like Posey and/or Artest get missed, why not?
Recently, Robert Horry sat down with a Houston reporter and had a few things to say:
“I don’t want to retire, especially after a year like I had last year,” Horry told KRIV-TV in Houston. “I know I could have had a better year. The year started off crazy for me with family issues and then it ended crazy for me getting hurt right at the end of the season.”
“I didn’t get a full season in like I wanted to see if it’s really time for me to retire. My last game I want to walk off the court sweating. My last game so far I walked off the court with a DNP (did not play) and I don’t want it to happen that way.”
“It’s not about breaking the bank,” Horry said. “I just want the minimum. I’ve made enough money. I just like being with the guys and competing and having fun.”
So again, if Horry - and it’s apparent he understands he wants to come back to play, not for money - signs for cheap, why not offer it to the veteran? There are many questions I ask to you, Lakers Nation, such being, does he fill a void the Lakers truly need? Does he have anything left in the tank? Would you, at the end of the day, even want him (you’re sort of crazy if you don’t)?
Robert Horry will always be known for the gritty player and the prototype for the perfect role player. His nickname, “Big Shot Rob,” doesn’t come without perhaps the most illustrious clutch resume in NBA history for a role player. He wants to show the love he has for the game of basketball, now should the Lakers show the love right back? If a cheap signing is agreed upon, why not bring Horry back home?

Hell, Horry would’ve laid out someone from Boston after all their drives. And with the disgusting lack of defense from the Lakers, it pretty much was embarrassing. At least Horry would’ve known to smack someone coming down the lane…
Also, I’d like to also note there is pretty much a small chance of it happening.
Horry says he’d like to return to the Spurs, where he spent the last five seasons. If that’s not possible, then he would like to head for the Houston Rockets — where he played his first four seasons.

I know what you mean though, he’s definitely lost a lot of his athleticism which is understandable due to games played and age. However, if Spurs and Rockets wouldn’t take him, I sure would (again, NOT as priority #1 though).

Whenever I think of Horry now, I think of that ugly shot he clanged off the side of the backboard in game 2 of the Western Conference Finals. His best days are behind him.

Secondly, I’m with everyone who says he is old. The guy IS old, he doesn’t have a step anymore, his shooting is pretty bad and the younger guys in the league are going to run around him.
What I would bring him in as is an assistant coach to teach the younger guys what it takes to win a championship.

From what I’m reading, it seems like he wants to retire on a better note. Horry may not have respected the person that Kobe was, but Phil Jackson didn’t either. Kobe has changed over the last few years, for the better.
If he’s willing to play for a minimum salary, I say the Lakers could offer him just a bit more to return to LA. At his age, he’s still a more physical and experienced presence than what the Lakers currently have. When Gasol, Bynum, Odom and/or Turiaf get in foul trouble, Horry would have no problem stepping in to play PF, allowing Gasol or Turiaf to play the Center position. He’s still got his Big Shot Rob/Bob reputation, so either they’ll have to cover him, or they’ll leave him open to add to his big shot legacy.
He realizes as well as we do that he had a bad season last year. It sounds to me like he wants to go out and prove something this year before he retires.
I’d definitely rather have him back than Kwame Brown if that rumor has any validity to it.
Either way you look at it, bringing him back would be more helpful than not. A power forward, coming off the bench, with something to prove, who can shoot is definitely a + for the Lakers. Then you have the promotional value that it has for the NBA as he would add a bit of fuel to the rivalry between the Phoenix Suns and the Lakers.
Like it or not, his not-so-soft style of play may have helped the Lakers win a championship last year. Keep that in mind. Big Shot Rob still has a couple highlights that he’d like to add to his reel.

Well Spoken Spoken. If Healthy Horry could add a dimension much like PJ Brown provided to the Celtics. Vet leadership who knows his role. Horry spaces the floor which would provide more breathing room to operate and his smarts on D and O is on par with the best. To not consider him if he is healthy is really an act of stupidity of laker fans.
