Nation Discussion: Bring back “Big Shot” Rob?

This is an interesting topic. Robert Horry recently came out and said some great things about his own career, how he wants to go out and when he wants to retire. Basically, he’s ready to give it another go and wants to contribute more than leaving his career on a playoff ‘DNP’ decision. And with that, Horry is set to become a free agent July 1.

There is no question the miles have added up over the years. In fact, no other player in NBA history has played in more NBA post-season games than Horry. However, Rob is indisputably the definition of clutch and most certainly is more than valued within the city of Angels. While I personally feel it shouldn’t be priority #1 for the Lakers, if potential-FA players like Posey and/or Artest get missed, why not?

Recently, Robert Horry sat down with a Houston reporter and had a few things to say:

“I don’t want to retire, especially after a year like I had last year,” Horry told KRIV-TV in Houston. “I know I could have had a better year. The year started off crazy for me with family issues and then it ended crazy for me getting hurt right at the end of the season.”

“I didn’t get a full season in like I wanted to see if it’s really time for me to retire. My last game I want to walk off the court sweating. My last game so far I walked off the court with a DNP (did not play) and I don’t want it to happen that way.”

“It’s not about breaking the bank,” Horry said. “I just want the minimum. I’ve made enough money. I just like being with the guys and competing and having fun.”

So again, if Horry - and it’s apparent he understands he wants to come back to play, not for money - signs for cheap, why not offer it to the veteran? There are many questions I ask to you, Lakers Nation, such being, does he fill a void the Lakers truly need? Does he have anything left in the tank? Would you, at the end of the day, even want him (you’re sort of crazy if you don’t)?

Robert Horry will always be known for the gritty player and the prototype for the perfect role player. His nickname, “Big Shot Rob,” doesn’t come without perhaps the most illustrious clutch resume in NBA history for a role player. He wants to show the love he has for the game of basketball, now should the Lakers show the love right back? If a cheap signing is agreed upon, why not bring Horry back home?

Lastly, I’ll leave all you Lakers fans with this, a video I cut years ago when Horry left us. Here is my own tribute to a player that will never leave my heart…

i’d take him back, but I wouldn’t make it a priority. if he happens to fall in our lap, I would be happy.

That’s my response right there. IFFFF.

Kobe stayed.. now Fisher’s back.. now Horry’s back.. Lakers reuniting? LOL. Where’s Caron Butler :)?

he’s not big shot rob anymore, his shooting is atrocious and he’s old and will not play any better than vlady so why waste the money

If there is no money involved - he signs for the min., why not?

Hell, Horry would’ve laid out someone from Boston after all their drives. And with the disgusting lack of defense from the Lakers, it pretty much was embarrassing. At least Horry would’ve known to smack someone coming down the lane…

  5. Gravatar Icon 5 LD2k

Also, I’d like to also note there is pretty much a small chance of it happening.

Horry says he’d like to return to the Spurs, where he spent the last five seasons. If that’s not possible, then he would like to head for the Houston Rockets — where he played his first four seasons.

  6. Gravatar Icon 6 Whatsa

Aww wtf.. so he still has to go through two teams..

I don’t understand how you guys could even consider bringin Rob back. Even after the western conference finals. I’ll always respect Dude for takin us places but no more kids. The train has crashed

Right now - Horry or Walton ;)
Especially if we don’t land a Posey or Artest… we sign Horry for the smallest amount of min. Doesn’t sound so bad then huh?

I know what you mean though, he’s definitely lost a lot of his athleticism which is understandable due to games played and age. However, if Spurs and Rockets wouldn’t take him, I sure would (again, NOT as priority #1 though).

If mitch brings horry back he would be a joke again.

That is enough to bring him back to our SOFT LAKERS. We do need a couple more vets.

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 xtro

I think horry s much happier here in l.a. than San Antonio. Bring him back and watch him save the day and win another trophy for us. Thank you Robert Horry!!!

im down to bring him back but only if we dont have to pay much at all. honestly tho i dont see him getting any playing time if he does return.

  19. Gravatar Icon 19 123KID

obviously he needs a sense of scenery change! i wouldnt mind the lakers gettin him back. maybe he can light some fire into gasol and odom by pushing them around during practices. and maybe he can side swipe a few guys in the playoffs like he did to nash and david west.

  20. Gravatar Icon 20 ryguy2303

    he’s too old

  21. Gravatar Icon 21 lakaluva

Dont we already have enough stiffs on this team… Walton and Vlad?

  22. Gravatar Icon 22 Lorenzo

Hes not coming back. He already said hes going to stay in Texas anyway.

  23. Gravatar Icon 23 Sako

i’d like to have him, he’s the veteran we need to help our younger guys, a la Derek Fisher

  24. Gravatar Icon 24 sclakerfan

The guy is over the hill and can’t make the big shots anymore. Did he make one 3 pointer in the Lakers-Spurs series?

  25. Gravatar Icon 25 335i

this report says otherwise. doesn’t look like he’s interested in any other teams besides the spurs and the rockets… http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3464573

HELL NO! he was STONE COLD steve HORRY! i swear it seemed like he was 0-20 3’s in the west finals…

Whenever I think of Horry now, I think of that ugly shot he clanged off the side of the backboard in game 2 of the Western Conference Finals. His best days are behind him.

“I don’t want to retire, especially after a year like I had last year,” Horry told KRIV-TV in Houston.

Actually, Robert, if you had a year like you had last year, then trust me, you need to retire.

he just sucks now, dont get him.

  31. Gravatar Icon 31 LakersFirst

First of all, the guy says he wants to play with San Antonio or Houston (obviously because he lives in Houston).

Secondly, I’m with everyone who says he is old. The guy IS old, he doesn’t have a step anymore, his shooting is pretty bad and the younger guys in the league are going to run around him.

What I would bring him in as is an assistant coach to teach the younger guys what it takes to win a championship.

  32. Gravatar Icon 32 kPoAbUe

yeah and dont forget to bring back fox and shaw! lol i dont now if he wants to come to LA let him let him win his 8th ring he could be used at the post-season. If ur gunna sign him then sign like Artest or some1.

while we are at it, bring back Shaq for minimum as well.

Maybe all the oldies can have a one last shot at a championship together again. Unfortunately, Shaq’s huge ego would probably prevent him from doing so

  38. Gravatar Icon 38 lakerschamps08

well we all should i think for the most part from wat i read from comments respect him for wat he has done…. if horry coulda hit that 3pointer in game 5 of 2003 semis we coulda have 4 in a row and then the possibility of 5 in a row but it did not happen… i would not mind him on the team, better than luke, coby, mbenga…. soooo watever if hes in PURPLE AND GOLD IT CANT HURT US…

PJ has previously criticized KB and vice versa… Diminished ability is the best argument but Horry you can never count out. As far as mental toughness… Horry is near the top. Now “can’t we all get along”.

will look to trade Luke Walton, possibly with Chris Mihm to balance salaries. They re-sign Sasha Vujacic to a $22 million contract over five years. They also keep Ronny Turiaf for three years at $9.5 million. Guess who else returns at a discount? That’s right . . . Kwame Brown. Lamar Odom is on the team opening night, starting at small forward.

In his last finals as a Laker I believe he was 0 for 32!

I wouldn’t say anyone is disprespecting the guy. From what I’ve read no one here has said he never contributed to Laker championships. All we are merely saying is, he’s too old. His career has seen better days.

I’d take Kwame “Birthday Cake” Brown for the minimum to replace Mbenga to fill the line up and to provide a body for Bynum and Gasol during practice, but nothing more.

If Horry would be willing to come back to LA for the minimum, I say, DO IT!

He’s got championship experience, and he’s got experience with Kobe, Phil, Fish, and the triangle. That is priceless.

This def. is not our first priority, it should be last. The dude wants to play in Texas, besides he does not respect Kobe. Only if he is dirt cheap, we’ll take him to play defense, hack Pierce few times and Garnett maybe Rondo too and get off. charges he is the master at it. And not forget he can bang the other old dude dirty Brown. Sorry Mbanga

From what I’m reading, it seems like he wants to retire on a better note. Horry may not have respected the person that Kobe was, but Phil Jackson didn’t either. Kobe has changed over the last few years, for the better.

If he’s willing to play for a minimum salary, I say the Lakers could offer him just a bit more to return to LA. At his age, he’s still a more physical and experienced presence than what the Lakers currently have. When Gasol, Bynum, Odom and/or Turiaf get in foul trouble, Horry would have no problem stepping in to play PF, allowing Gasol or Turiaf to play the Center position. He’s still got his Big Shot Rob/Bob reputation, so either they’ll have to cover him, or they’ll leave him open to add to his big shot legacy.

He realizes as well as we do that he had a bad season last year. It sounds to me like he wants to go out and prove something this year before he retires.

I’d definitely rather have him back than Kwame Brown if that rumor has any validity to it.

Either way you look at it, bringing him back would be more helpful than not. A power forward, coming off the bench, with something to prove, who can shoot is definitely a + for the Lakers. Then you have the promotional value that it has for the NBA as he would add a bit of fuel to the rivalry between the Phoenix Suns and the Lakers.

Like it or not, his not-so-soft style of play may have helped the Lakers win a championship last year. Keep that in mind. Big Shot Rob still has a couple highlights that he’d like to add to his reel.

Well Spoken Spoken. If Healthy Horry could add a dimension much like PJ Brown provided to the Celtics. Vet leadership who knows his role. Horry spaces the floor which would provide more breathing room to operate and his smarts on D and O is on par with the best. To not consider him if he is healthy is really an act of stupidity of laker fans.
