ESPN: Baron Davis to opt out of deal

Now that we can put Ron Artest behind us, let’s start putting all our thoughts in having Baron Davis in Purple & Gold. Whose with me?! Sound-off…

ESPN: Golden State point guard Baron Davis elected to become a free agent Monday night, opting out of the final year of his contract with the Warriors in a surprise move.

Davis had until Monday night to decide whether to turn down his $17.8 million contract for next season, the final year of a six-year deal. The Warriors didn’t expect him to opt out of the deal despite little progress in the parties’ long-term contract negotiation, but club spokesman Raymond Ridder said they received a letter from Davis’ agent, Todd Ramasar, late Monday indicating his intentions.

Davis still could return to Golden State as a free agent, but his opt-out clause was his only bit of leverage in forcing contract talks with the Warriors before next summer. The former All-Star also is now free to negotiate with other clubs, possibly facilitating a sign-and-trade deal with Golden State.

Davis, a 29-year-old veteran, repeatedly has said he intended to return to Golden State, but he might be displeased by Warriors coach Don Nelson’s recent declarations about giving more playing time to Golden State’s young players, even at the expense of a few victories next season. Nelson reiterated his plan Monday at a news conference to introduce draft picks Anthony Randolph and Richard Hendrix.

    Davis/Kobe/Odom/Gasol/Bynum = OMG!

That would be an insane lineup…

I’d love to get him, but I highly doubt he’s gonna take a $12 million pay cut just to play in LA.

Mr. Davis would be quite the asset, but we don’t got the change for a dude of his caliber. I’ve been dreaming of him (and his huge veneers) in a Lakers jersey since he got drafted. Would be sweet.

we have no shot at him. you dont opt out of a 17 mil contract if you dont think you can make more. he is gonna get hooked up close to 19 mil per by some team and gonna go back to his injured ways once he has the big payday and guaranted money. the only guy we have a shot at is pietres and that is if we cant sign sasha.

WE WANT BARON. More Lakers fan will welcome him then Artest and that’s a damn fact. Baron needs to come for his hometown team and his fav when he was a child Bring him home mitch. “If you build it he will come”

  24. Gravatar Icon 24 Tim M.

Apparently Sun Yue is the Magic Johnson of the far east.

  25. Gravatar Icon 25 Edward

Baron is one of the classiest players in the league, and when he plays well can be considered in the top 3 point guards in the league. Hands down we cannot get him. We would have to get rid of our trash (which we can’t), and we’d have a crowded PG position. What most of you guys commenting don’t realize is the immediate and long term future for the lakers looks good right now. Just sit on that, and enjoy the ride. You don’t see SA changing their team, but they manage to win every other year or so. Just be happy, our team could have beaten the Celtics, game 1 = peirce injury (vlad horrible D), game 2 = refs… anything could have happened, game 4 = let go a 24 point lead. Enough said, we had 2 wins, that win any of the three we could have won and it would have forced game 7, or win 2 of the three and we would have the ship. Look for a few FA pickups this offseason, maybe one or two, but those players won’t get much playing time. Unless Odom gets traded I can’t see anything happening, Mitch already unloaded most of our trash, can’t see how he could possibly do it again.

  26. Gravatar Icon 26 Sako

I don’t want to get my hopes up.

  27. Gravatar Icon 27 chase

This would be so cool!!!! Baron Davis would bring toughness. Do you think Baron Davis is going to let guys like KG yell and scream all over the court. I don’t think so.

Remember, he’s buddies with Fish when they played together in Golden State. Maybe D. Fish can bring him in! Not to mention him being from L.A!

  28. Gravatar Icon 28 lakersforlife77

A borderline superstar taking an mle level deal? No way. It’s not going to happen. Even with the LA connections money prevails over everything. It’s a wonderful idea, and a beautiful dream, but that’s just what it is, and not even close to reality. Baron is going to get some ridiculous deal from some mediocre team that he will ultimately accept.

  29. Gravatar Icon 29 Whatsa

Davis is a beast.. I want him but what about Fisher and Farmar? :[

  30. Gravatar Icon 30 Fred A.

If we get B. Davis we would have a great point guard behind Derek Fisher!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Then we should try to do this deal:

Baron could be coming to Los Angeles, but I don’t think it would be the Lakers he would be joining. I think Baron will go the Clippers. The reasonsbeing are:

    A) the Clippers could offer him more money than the Lakers can (Baron opted out of a $17.8M contract, he’s going to want something in that ball park and the Clippers, being under the salary cap, can offer him that)

    B) The Clippers are in NEED of a point guard/leader and Baron wants to be needed. It’s obvious Baron doesn’t like the fact that the Warriors are leaning towards their younger players, hence he doesn’t feel he is needed in Golden St. If Elgin Baylor is a good GM, he’ll try to find a way to team up Brand/Baron/Maggette.

Anything is possible but…the Lakers obtaining Artest was more of a possibility then landing Baron Davis.

  32. Gravatar Icon 32 e

    not happening..we cant afford him

  33. Gravatar Icon 33 SILO

Thats a crap load of Guards.
Kobe, Fisher, Farmar, Sasha, Joe Crawford and Davis?

Only way this works is that, Joe is sent to the D-league.
Sasha backs Kobe. B Diddy starts. Fisher and Farmar back ups.
even then thats alot of guards at PG.
But, lets say JC is something special. Better than Farmar. Than i wouldnt have a problem trading farmar with a package deal with Luke or something like that.

Baron loves LA. Watches the Lakers all the time.
For one thing, if baron teaches JC a killer cross ova. . . . .
    ooooooooooooooo baby.

Baron is gonna start, fish will back up kobe, cuz he is pure shooter. i dont know about farmar he is the odd man out. do not imean do not start vlad rad bring him off the bench. so we shoul look like this nex year

    Baron
    Sasha
    Kobe
    Gasol
    Bynum

    bench mob

    Sue
    Farmar
    Fisher
    Odom
    Ariza
    VLad
    Luke
    turiaf
    JC

DAMN this is it, peo ple are jus gonna hve to play new positions

f##k this! i want to get rid of luke and get some defense! not an ego. what the f##k are we going to do with fisher and farmar if davis is here, ever think of that? we got gasol! dont get greedy you cant have it all.

  41. Gravatar Icon 41 ricky

people, this is all talk. these are just rumors that really have nothing to do with the lakers. baron is too good to opt out of $17.8 million dollar salary to make MLE money, even if its for a title contender like the lakers. if he’s ever coming to LA, it will most likely be the clippers. i don’t see him in purple and gold at all unless there are headlines like “B. DIDDY TO LAKERS” posted everywhere on the internet. but until then, im not going to keep my hopes up.

im just grateful enough that we have kobe, pau, odom, fish, and bynum ready for next season. sure, we can still use some roster changes, but if all is the same and we re-sign sasha and ronny, then im happy.

i still think the lakers should try and get mickael pietrus and since memphis wont re-sign kwame brown, i think we can use him as a backup for bynum. he may be a bad player overall, but he is still another big body who can strengthen the frontcourt, play some defense and get some boards at least. there is not many veteran bigs in the FA market and im still unsure about chris mihm’s overall rehab, so kwame would be a good to take back as a backup.

  42. Gravatar Icon 42 joseph

  46. Gravatar Icon 46 yellowpurplefever

Baron to LA slim & non chance. And again, anything can happen. Yes package Lamar and Vlady for Nelson’s run and gun style with NO defense, fits perfect. Warriors won’t take Fluke too slow, can’t jump and barely dunk at 6′8″. We take Baron and Mike Pietrus. Man, this team is Awsome right? DCLAKER, I always respect my elder

    KOBE/SASH
    BARON/FISH/FAMAR
    ANDREW/BROWN/MIHM
    PAU/RONNY/
    PIETRUS/ARIZA/FLUKE

WOW look at that line up!!

  47. Gravatar Icon 47 Jamie Spears Insider

If he plays for Mid-level exception, go for it! If not, let’s stop dreaming. We already have luxury tax issues (esp. now with Bynum asking for MAX).

  48. Gravatar Icon 48 getgasol

This is completely irrelevant from the laker’s standpoint. There is no way we can afford how much Baron Davis is worth, and even if we could, we are good at point guard and could better spend some money at the forward positions, maybe replacing Radmnovich or Walton.

  49. Gravatar Icon 49 Diehardfan

Realistically speaking, Baron will not get close to the amount of money that he opted out from, from a championship contender. So, either he takes less less less money from a team that has a chance to win a title. That is the scary part. I honestly hope he goes to the Cavs. I would hate to see a team like the Celtics, Phoenix or Spurs get him.

  56. Gravatar Icon 56 lakerfan81

Yeah, Davis will sign with the Lakers for a minimum, then in 2010, James and Wade will both sign with the Lakers for a minimum. Then, a meteor will fall in Kwame Brown’s back yard and give him super powers, but he still won’t be able to save the planet from the invading space ants. So I welcome our future overlords.

  57. Gravatar Icon 57 gugy

Baron is not coming to LA. He wants too much cash.
Mitch probably has orders from Buss not to extrapolate.

Ideally we need to dump Mihn, Luke and Vlad. Three stooges that did not contribute much last few season. If we are able to unload this garbage, then we would have leverage to bring someone like Davis.

    But it ain’t happening.

Huh? Was anything you typed coherent?

Anyways, here is the latest Hoopsworld stuff:

Davis could be facing the prospect of accepting a full Mid Level Exception (~$5.5-6 million) if he’s not careful. Davis is privately open about his affinity for the Los Angeles Lakers but even he would balk at the prospect of signing for a 65% pay cut.

Giving up $17+ million was certainly a gutsy move.
