Nation Discussion: Get Maggette, give up Sasha & Ronny?
It is well known that Maggette tested the free agency waters and is reported to be targeted by two championship caliber teams in the Boston Celtics and the San Antonio Spurs. However, do and could the Lakers have a shot at landing Maggette? According to ESPN, they believe we’d have to give up Sasha & Ronny in order to sign Mags…
It’s believed that Maggette, without an offer from a team with cap room, favors San Antonio if he has to sign a contract starting at the midlevel. But he has also drawn similar interest from a variety of enticing contenders — Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Orlando, New Orleans and Utah are the known suitors — and the Lakers would be a dangerous suitor if they wanted to get involved given Maggette’s close relationship with Kobe Bryant. The Lakers, though, would have to abandon any interest in resigning Sasha Vujacic and Ronny Turiaf to sign Maggette, and the team still favors retaining those two key reserves
Interestingly enough, Bryant & Maggette share the same agent in Rob Pelinka. And I truely believe there is no way Pelinka and Maggette wouldn’t go Lakers, without hesitation, if there is equal money on the table. However, would it be losing both key reserves in Sasha and Turiaf over? You get a talent upgrade for sure and more flexibility… but ultimately, do you get what you need without creating another problem in terms of personnel? Sound off!

Maggette is a proven commodity! He can play! Take him over Sasha and Turiaf, Luke and Vladrad ANYDAY!…They haven’t proven anything and I’m not convinced they will. Maggette is definately worth more than all those guys COMBINED!

I,personally,wouldn’t do it.My moto is nalue for value,meaning,lose Sasha get JJ Redick(shooter for shooter,not sayin’ they’ll lose sasha to Magic)lose Ronny get Pietrus(put LO back at PG/PF)or Posey.
I don’t think the Lakers would need to sacrifice BOTH Sasha and Ronny. In all honesty, if the Lakers were to somehow acquire Maggette, I think they would only lose Sasha, because it seems like Sasha would be more expensive to keep than Ronny. Ronny is probably looking at a $3M to $4M per year deal.
However, one thing that has not been mentioned is the fact that on the Lakers, Maggette would not start as the starters would be Fish/Kobe/Bynum/LO/Pao. Maggette would most likely back up Kobe, which would be a stellar backup. But…does Maggette want to come off the bench (this is a problem with him and the Boston Suckadics- Maggette would not start there either)?
San Antonio on the other hand, would most likely start Maggette.

Unfortunately, other teams are not so dumb to take on such garbage players.
Lakers need toughness…D…. Chemistry… good locker room guy, experience. Maggette doesn’t seem the right fit. Boston and San Antonio would be better fits for him there becuz their D is already established. Lakers need guys like Kurt Thomas, PJ Brown, Posey, tough minded Defensive guys who add character and experience to the team. Don’t fall in love with glamour guys. They might greatly disappoint you. Glamour guys don’t have toughness. They want to be seen and worshipped. Sounds like our presidential election with our Messiah the Obama.

i was going to say the same thing… i think ronny is a player that we all love… if we get maggette we can let go sasha because with mags, we would be getting shooting, which is what sasha gives us, plus in mags we get a complete player, not just shooting….
but i dont think it will happen,, so keep the machine and ronny,, and sign posey…

TOO MANY SMALL FORWARDS ON THE TEAM AS IT IS.
if this report is correct wouldn’t it mean that we can only sign ronny and sasha and no one else.. in other words we are not using the MLE on posey or mags.. we are going to use it on our own free agents.. i say we just sign our own free agents and try to trade luke or vlad for anything..

maggette is more reliable than sasha because sahsa is always on and off and he doesnt deserve the mle

i think that if we did sign mags.. he would only start at sf.. when kobe sits he would slide to the sg position.. and when kobe comes off the bench its usually to replace odom anyway so kobe would then play sf.. i think mags is athlethic enough to at least play descent d.. guarentee he doesn’t just let ray allen drive past him in the final minutes of a finals game..

i say we should go after him if for no other reason than to prevent the celdics or the spurs from getting him. i think hes worth losing sasha and ronny even tho it pains me to say that b/c i love them so much no homo. i also think it would be possible to get maggette and keep ronny which would be fine with me. if we end up just keeping sasha and ronny tho i wouldnt be sad at all its a win win for us.

its strange that in the more recent decade, no exeptional free agent has ever been willing to sign with the lakers. the only 2 big names that we ever signed as free agents were malone and payton, unfortunately they were already at the end of their careers. but its always the other teams that get good, quality players. guys like posey, bowen, lewis, turkoglu, stojackovic etc.. the lakers have always gotten their talent mainly through draft/trades. i miss having guys like fox, horry, fisher (albeit he is back), and shaw who were awesome role players. we need players like them.
i hope we do get maggette or posey but also try to retain at least either sasha and ronny as well because they add so much character and depth to our team. but when it comes down to it, sasha and ronny are the top guys i would want back.
DO IT ! sasha and ronny are very replaceable !!! especially for a ring ! mag gives us another big body to pluge up the middlr and a great player to give kobe time to rest . he creats shots and gets to the foul line ! sasha is a shooter and will never be anything else AND ronny , yes he gives us that spark off the bench but hes a missing puzzle type player let them both go and get posey and mag!

In a perfect world this would be a stellar move but you just answered my follow up question. No team would want to take our garbage just as much we wouldn’t wanna take theirs. Let’s face it, we’re stuck with Luke and Vlad for a few more years so we might as well use these extra bodies. I know Mags has been eager to start for a long time so I think San Antonio would be at the top of his list. They would still have Manu coming off the bench which Pops likes him that way and they’re still a championship contender which Mags likes so…it’s a match made in heaven for both parties.
Just think about if we were able to sign maggette and then trade lo for artest and kenny thomas why the hell do you need ronny and sasha

that sounds like a great line-up but we lose one great thing that we got last year.. experience.. (as a unit, together) as much as i love looking for new news everyday.. i think the best approach would be to wait and see.. i really feel that the smartest move would be to resign ronny and get posey.. i love the machine.. put if its between him and posey.. i take posey.. ronny is the type of player you can’t replace him.. we need him on the team..

Can’t wait until Wednesday. We will see a clearer picture of who’s going where and who will be avail. Maggette is a very nice addition over Sash anytime. But losing Ronny is a tough one. I love the guy’s attitude and energy. Again, we need another miracle trade to rid of Fluke and V-lady then Lakers will rule NBA 3-5 yrs!!

Tough call. I think it would be a big mistake to mess with the chemistry and history the team has built. Ronny and Sasha’s losses would eviscerate the bench mob and you’d lose two fan favorites. I will say though that the other day Joe McDonnel (AM570) made a great point about Corey “Xzibit” Maggette: He gets to the free throw line so much that it puts the other team’s guys in foul trouble, forcing them to adjust. I also think that helps stop the other team’s momentum and keep us in the game, i.e. prevent blowouts from forming. Still, I would hate to lose two guys, especially one big. I just don’t think there’s anyway Ronny goes, fans love his spirit and he will take less money to show loyalty to the franchise that stood by him during his health concerns. I’m super in for Kurt Thomas. Haha, and for a second I thought I was gonna see a DCLaker post without the words “Pietrus” in it.
HELL NO. I don’t want some shoot first 5th option player over 2 role players. This guy will screw up any championship team.

sure sasha and ronnie are great, i’d love to keep them… but having maggette play a role > what sasha and ronnie brings to the team.
worried about team chemistry? indeed it is important… But it’s not like the lakers would become a dysfunctional team. team chemistry will be good, if not great. With Maggette’s friendship with kobe, and his relationship with LO, how can anything go wrong?
you now have either LO or CM at the three.
depending what team you play, you can adjust and start either, and have the other come off the bench.
either player is capable as a role player in the starting unit, and they both can be a leader for the bench. hell, both players would probably be in the running for 6th man of the year

We need Ronny to back up Gasol and incase Mihm or Bynum are hurt; we can replace Sasha. Plus, Sasha would want more money and maybe even MLE. I say sign Posey and keep Ronny. Leave everything else the same and we win the title. I don’t know what potential Coby Karl has, but we have an option to bring him back for about 750k. If Posey is gone sign Mag for Mid level, we can always trade him later….Go Lakers.

Honestly you can get both. Pay off Mihm’s real small contract. Try and trade walton and radmanovic, and you can let sasha go. Shooters like him are a dime a dozen, half his shots are open. However, hussle players like Ronny are a must have. The bottleneck here is that we have two small forwards that could be good that aren’t, and they have long contracts.
JJ Redick > Sasha. Posey > Maggette for what we need. Either way we get what we need in a SF, but we are paying two players for nothing (Walton and Radmanovic). If we get Maggette, he starts at SF, and Ariza comes off the Bench, and Bynum is backup center. Fudge his agent for asking for the max, he can stay on the bench until he’s humble enough to know his place. Most important thing is to buy out Mihm’s contract freeing up a roster spot, the only thing that’s conflictual is the SFs that we have. All of them are injured, Ariza physically, Walton and Radmanovic mentally.

1.Kevin Durant needs a good decent center in Mhim and some that can dish the ball around pretty good in Walton.
2.The Kings are recieveing 2 great 3 point shooters in Radmon and Karl, with a amazing promising point guard in Sun Yee.
3. And we are getting the finisher in Wilcox and a All-Star in Artest.

Maggette can create some offense when Kobe is out, but the Lakers need someone like Sasha to break down zone defenses. Maggette is an ok 3 point shooter, not great. With Sasha, the only others capable of making the three are Farmar, Fisher, and Vlade and these guys are not on Sasha’s level. If they can get Maggette AND Sasha, then it’s worth it, but if not, I wouldn’t go for it. With Odom who can play the 4, Turiaf is expendable.

Your an idiot to think this is a bad move. sasha is a confident shooter, ill give him that, but at times he is a burden because of his confidence to shoot 10 shots a game while making only 1. he has alot of 1 for 10, 2, for 9 type games so he definitely is not as good as maggete. Ronny would be the one I would not give up. He brings energy and fun to the bench. So ultimitely this is a good deal, but it will ruin what they had going with ronny being the lovable big guy, and sasha being the self proclaimed machine.
I was thinkin’(’bout time)if mitch can talk to LO about shedding some of that 13 mil.just to free up some space to get some quality players.

Why is everyone so high on JJ Redick? I’ll give you he’s a good shooter, possibly even better than Sasha in creating his shot and popping quickly BUT I don’t think he has it in him to give 100% on defense. I’ll give that to Sasha, he’s a limited defender but he doesn’t give up on D. Anyway, just like a lot of people were talking crap about Mitch, I think at least either Vladdy or Luke will step up next year. I think it will be Luke. Vladdy just needs to play well enough to be tradeable. Just a straight swap more someone else’s “meh” player.

Ariza is able to play SG and SF, and Radmanovic has played PF before with us and other teams, Mbenga might be staying and “could” play in front of Mihm as he is injured a ton and is also not as physical and strong as Mbenga, but hey, you never know, what do you guys think of this signing of Posey and lineup I concocked, to me this lineup sounds very good to me!
We have to get Posey but VLAD HAS TO GO and I’d rather take my chances with JJ Redick,trust me,when guys come to LA THEY PLAY 10 TIMES BETTER,ASK ARIZA(and JJ and Ariza are real good friends and had good chemistry when they played in Orlando and both had minimum playing time)!
