UPDATE: Lakers have until Friday afternoon to match Turiaf’s offer; haven’t yet

UPDATE: Time is running out for the Lakers. Will they match Turiaf’s offer? If the rumors are true (Artest) they still need a big if Ronny leaves. Will this change their decisions on that matter? Let’s all stay tuned:

LakersBlog: The clock is ticking…

Less than 48 hours remain before the Lakers either match the four-year, $17 million offer Ronny Turiaf got from the Golden State Warriors or let him walk. Team officials had seven days from when they first received the offer sheet to decide.

The Lakers need to notify Turiaf and/or his agent by Friday afternoon of their intentions, and as of 4 p.m. Wednesday there wasn’t anything to announce.

“No decision yet,” agent Mark Bartelstein said in an email.

“Nothing to report,” said Lakers spokesman John Black.

—————————————-
RealGM
: Ronny Turiaf’s deal is structured in a “slightly frontloaded” manner, according to agent Mark Bartelstein, which will make matching the deal even more problematic for the Lakers.

Assuming Turiaf’s salary for next season is around $5 million, the Lakers would effectively be paying $10 million for a backup who would receive limited playing time behind Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.

Bartelstein said the Lakers have not given him any indication on whether they will match the Warriors’ offer, which includes a player option for the fourth year. Under the rules of the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, the Los Angeles Lakers have seven days (through Thursday, July 17) to match the Warriors’ offer.

—————————————-
RealGM
: The Golden State Warriors have signed restricted free agent forward Ronny Turiaf to an offer sheet, Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin announced today. Per team policy, terms of the offer sheet were not announced.

Under the rules of the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, the Los Angeles Lakers have seven days (through Thursday, July 17) to match the Warriors’ offer.

—————————————-
I honestly don’t see the Lakers matching the offer. If they don’t, Turiaf will be a Warrior - although we here in Los Angeles already knew he was just that. Very fitting. We love you Ronny wherever you end up…

Press Enterprise: Lakers forward-center Ronny Turiaf agreed to a four-year, $17 million offer from the Golden State Warriors, according to two league sources. Turiaf is a restricted free agent. The Lakers have seven days to match the Warriors’ offer.

Also, the Warriors are set to sign Maggette as well. The L.A. Times says Mags contract is worth 50 million

In Maggette, 28, the Warriors acquired a player they have had their eye on for some time. He joins guard Monta Ellis and Stephen Jackson in the Warriors backcourt, making up one of the highest-scoring perimeter trios in the league.

While we’ll all miss the hell out of Ronnie and feel bad every time he rejects a Laker’s shot, I’m super happy for him! He worked super hard for this opportunity and he deserves every penny. :) Congrate Ronnie! We love you!!!

    oh no man, NO..

  13. Gravatar Icon 13 Diehardfan

Wow! I am not worried about the loss of Ronny. If the Lakers match that offer it would be the stupidest mistake since Luke’s contract. As much as I love Turiaf while he WAS a Laker who cares that he is gone. Good luck to him..but we have to try and sign better players.

You will always get cheers at STAPLES Ronny. We know where your heart remains.

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 BigPC

Oh NO! Well for now it’s in the hands of Mitch and the Bball Gods! After getting to the Finals with a major piece missing, maybe Rony would want to stick around to get that Ring! G.S.? Come on! .500 at best!

noooo well that sucks.. thanks ronny for all that u done.. but once u leave for more money that tells me u dont care bout winnin or ur teammates… so thanks and bye… and another player takin money instead of a chance to win the title… and so much for all that crap mitch bout sasha and ronny come first, all that bah blah blah blah…

  22. Gravatar Icon 22 ricky

this sucks. now our depth on the bench just weakend big time with him leaving. i didnt see this coming, ronny was such a good team player and he leaves just like that. im surprised he didnt decide to give it another shot at the title. most young players want to get money first now and by the time they are 30-someting, they struggle to find a team willing to sign them so they can sit on the bench and say they finally won a championship but did close to nothing to earn it. i like ronny, his energy, passion, and blocking shots. however, im now worried that there are no more bigs out there to help us out. our front court is weak now that we have no PF off the bench. dang it!!

Ronny would be stupid not to take this money. He is young and is looking for fin. security and every nba player his age would do the same thing. Welcome to the Real World. I think you need brain surgery.

  26. Gravatar Icon 26 Lakerdude

This will weaken our bench big time, I hope the money is worth than an NBA title, Golden state is a long way off from winning it all espeacially with the loss of Baron of Davis

  27. Gravatar Icon 27 Daryl Imhoff

If the Lakers match the offer for Ronny that money does not affect the MLE money. However, if they sign Kurt Thomas it will count against the MLE. If the Lakers plan to bring in Posey or someone of similar quality they would be better off matching the offer. Anyway you look at it it’s expensive. Either of the two types of money will be into the luxory tax, so for every dollar they spend it will cost 2 dollars.

  28. Gravatar Icon 28 ab4sure

Kurt Thomas gets a rebound every 3minutes(great) and a very good post defender… NOT SOFT… put him next to bynum and you have a great defensive frontline.

  29. Gravatar Icon 29 lakers-r-pimpilicous

get anderson varego and jj redick
almost clones of ronny and sasha

  30. Gravatar Icon 30 LakersFirst

This is a smart move by Golden St. They need a power forward, they now have money and they know the Lakers first want to sign is Sasha before Turiaf.

If the Lakers don’t match this offer (never say never), perhaps they should take a look at Charlie Villanueva. Obviously they would have to trade to get him. He’s set to make $3.4M to $4.6M next season (qualifying offer next season). Villaneuva is a 6′11 power forward and Milwaukee supposedly wants to get rid of him. He’s not as good of a defender as Turiaf (although Turiaf is foul proned), but he might make a nice back up to Pao.

Ironically enough offering Mihm and his expiring $2.6M would be enough (don’t know if Miwaukee would go for it because of Mihm’s injury-plagued last 2 years), but if Milwaukee wants to get rid of him like Villaneuva like they said they did a month ago. Basically if Milwaukee did want to accept Mihm (big IF), they would just be shedding salary (probably trade for Mihm and then buy him out).

Varajao would be a good player to get. The problem with him is that he is more expensive at $5.7M this coming year and over $6 the following year.

Kurt Thomas would be an excellent back up if Turiaf left, however, from what I’ve read he wants to stay in San Antonio.

I don’t think the Lakers can sit around and wait on Sasha to see if he gets more offers. They should make a final offer to him and begin looking for other power forwards in the event that they don’t want to match Turiaf

  31. Gravatar Icon 31 kPoAbUe

wow. golden state look at u. u guys lost Davis now ur getting corey which is worth like 8mill give him 10mll a year. turiaf is ok he deserves 4.5mill. i serously dont care abt him let him go he kinda pisses me off too. At least when we lose these guys Lakers get some veteran experience.

Lasty, the Lakers may want to look at Sean William of NJ (6′11 PF) who is a great shot blocker (no offense, but good shot blocker). He is set to make $1.6M this year but not sure if NJ would want to trade him. NJ is stacked at the PF position with Yi (he played the 4 at times with Milwaukee), Sean Williams and Stromile Swift.

I don’t think the Lakers can sit around and wait on Sasha to see if he gets more offers. They should make a final offer to him and begin looking for other power forwards in the event that they don’t want to match Turiaf.

Ugh, I really did not think this would happen. I don’t blame the guy…but the era of love for Ronny is DONE. He is on another team, no love. Oh, and DCLaker is not gonna be happy to hear that the magic are offering their full MLE for Pietrus.

  40. Gravatar Icon 40 John Barry Sux

Hey all this buy Ronnie hello Kurt Thomas talk is just retarded to me. What most of you fail to realize is that Ronnie is still growing as a basketball player. In other words the Ronnie we see next season will be better than the one we saw this season and so on and so forth. In the same mold that Derek Fisher or an AC Green improved over the years so will Ronnie Turiaf. Plus he is such a glue guy around the locker room, one of Kobes favorite players on the team. THERE IS A REASON GOLDEN STATE IS WILLING TO PAY HIM THAT MUCH! I think the Lakers will match this offer, it doesnt count against their MLE money and they were expecting to have to increase both Sasha and Ronnies contracts anyways. I am disappointed in you Laker fans saying Bye Ronnie (as Mark Jackson would say your better than that).

  41. Gravatar Icon 41 gugy

    It’s all about money, honey.

Hopefully the Lakers will land somebody as good and as energetic to replace him.

  42. Gravatar Icon 42 MT

Well….thanks Ronny for your time in LA. Put yourself in Ronny’s position position, there’s no way that you can turn down this deal at an AVERAGE of $4.25 mill versus LA’s offer at what…about $1 mill to $2 mill? So congrats Ronny and best of luck.

of course he does. he chooses to sign the offer sheet offered by the other team. for instance, he could have signed lets say a 3 year 9 million dollar contract with lets say, boston, instead of the golden state contract if boston was offering such a contract.

or even better he could have accepted whatever the lakers wanted to give him and never signed an offer sheet with anyone else.

not true. thomas could sign on for the veterans minimum or the BAE if he so desired.

Why does everyone say “he rather take the money than a championship”. Put it this way…If you guys worked for a company that payed $15/hr but had the chance to win the company of the year title, or a company that pays $120/hr but will probably not make the playoff for the company of the year. What will you guys do?

I will go for the money because when it’s all said and done I need money to pay loans off, somehow I don’t think showing off a “Company of the year” trophy will delete my balance due.

Ronny worked hard for us and gave it his all every time he stepped on the court. He deserves his increase if not with the lakers then with another team.

    Good Luck Ronny

What you fail to understand is that Golden State is overpaying for Turiaf and the Lakers already have massive contracts such as Kobe, Pau, and Bynum’s future extension.

Kurt Thomas, a proven veteran and solid player, would most likely come at a cheaper price than Turiaf.

Varajao would be a good acqusition but his contract is even more expensive at $5.7M this coming year and over $6 the following year.

Here is something else that I read. The NY Knicks are interested in trading David Lee. David Lee is a simlar type of player as Turiaf and is set to make $1.7M next season. Would the NY be willing to trade him to L.A.? I know it may not sound like much but someone may be willing to take Mihm and his expiring contract ($2.6M) just for the sheer fact of shedding salary. NY, being a team that is way over the luxury cap may find anything to help them shed salary as a plus.

Ironically enough offering Mihm and his expiring $2.6M would be enough (don’t know if Miwaukee would go for it because of Mihm’s injury-plagued last 2 years), but if Milwaukee wants to get rid of Villaneuva like they said they did a month ago, they may do it. If Milwaukee did want to accept Mihm (big IF), they would just be doing so to shed salary (probably trade for Mihm and then buy him out).

Varajao would be a good player to get. The problem with him is that he is more expensive at $5.7M this coming year and over $6 the following year.

Kurt Thomas would be an excellent back up if Turiaf left, however, from what I’ve read he wants to stay in San Antonio.

THOMAS IS RUNS SLOWER THEN MY GRANDPA, AND I THINK HES SHOOTS BETTER THEN HIM NOW

    GET VAREGO
    GET REDICK

IF RONNY WANTS TO LEAVE LAKER LAND, LET HIM WALK SAMETHING WITH SASHA

NY, being a team that is way over the luxury cap may find anything to help them shed salary as a plus.

you are right bout sean williams

THOMAS STILL RUNS SLOWER THEN MY GRANDPA

ugh. I’m gonna miss Ronny’s energy. Great guy, best of luck to him.

Kobe’s going to not like this. He and Ronny are tight buds.
