SacBee: Lakers willing to trade Odom for Artest?

I noticed this from the SacBee blog today. Interesting stuff. Amick claims Artest could be traded very soon as well.

Sacramento Bee: I’ve been told by numerous reliable people that it could happen quickly and that the Kings have already received calls from some of the expected pursuers of the small forward. The Lakers rang with no call back as yet from the Kings, and it appears the pieces in that possible deal have not changed.

The Lakers are willing to offer forward Lamar Odom, but the question is whether they’re willing to take on the contract of forward Kenny Thomas (two seasons, approximately $18 million left).

do it mitch and resign sasha……………. and please dump dj, luke, vladi, chris, and bring back sasha….

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I’d rather do Vlad for Keyon Dooling and JJ Redick than this trade.

I don’t see the trade happening any other way. Kenny Thomas pulled a Luke Walton. He was half way decent until he got his extension. Now that Ronny is gone though it might not be that bad of a trade.

Not after what he did. No thank you!

That’s a good point about Kenny Thomas. Now that Turiaf could leave, the lakers will need a backup power forward.

By giving up LO, the Lakers could acquire the physical perimeter defender that they need and a back up power forward. The big road block would be the fact that Kenny Thomas is set to make $8.5M AFTER next year, which doesn’t the help the Lakers and the luxury tax situation.

They will make the luxury tax back in ticket sales.

I don’t want to hear the woes of luxury tax from them ;)

Now that Sac has signed Ronnie. The Lakers should sign Ronnie and then trade him to SAC for Artest.

This sounds like a decent trade except for the 9 mil going to Kenny Thomas for 2 seasons.. but I would pull the trigger

Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t know you worked for the privately held company, the Los Angeles Lakers. Since you do, you know their financial situation better than all of us.

Let’s face it man, no one here knows the Lakers what the Lakers organization make in a year and no one know here knows their profitability.

If you don’t mind about the luxury tax situation, then I’m sure you’re not concerned with the fact that they are way over the salary cap, which prevents the Lakers from acquiring any major free agents, but I’m sure you won’t mind if the Lakers have a roster of $90M+ like the Knicks with zero flexibility.

9 million for 2 years to KT is a bummer but hey it becomes an expiring deal after this coming season so if Buss is willing to keep shelling out the dough we can perhaps get yet another piece with that expiring deal.:)

…or they’ll just trade him for picks or let him walk. either way, i’d do this deal.

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 kb24bestever

    please mitch dont do it.
its not gonna help us at all

  16. Gravatar Icon 16 xtro

Do it Mitch!!! Defense wins championships!

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 Motown

Artest would be a good addition, but taking back Kenny Thomas would probably be a deal breaker, with bad contracts like Luke and Rad, the Lakers already appear more worried to overpay Turiaf and Sasha, so taking on an obviously overpayed Thomas, something just seems unlikely about that to me

I was being sarcastic of course…

Most people ignore the Salary Cap in trade situations. I don’t claim - nor am I an expert - at the Salary Cap. However, I DO KNOW FOR A FACT Jerry Buss will pay out - over the cap - if it brings us a championship or two…

  28. Gravatar Icon 28 Diehardfan

Taking on another big contract? Why would the lakers do this? The kings would be getting a better rebounder and someone who is younger. In turn we get a great defensive player who has more toughness than Odom. I would say that is an even trade. Especially since they both are expiring contract players.

  29. Gravatar Icon 29 daboss1849

Mitch you will be gm of the year if u can pull this off. Not only can artest dominate at the 3 he could back kobe up and then trevor can play the 3 and then we can let Sasha go also. Do it mitch and do it now!!!

Repeat after me: Say no to Ron Artest.

    At least for now.

Seriously, let’s first see how well the foursome of LO, Kobe, Pau, and Bynum workout before we start shipping ppl out.

  34. Gravatar Icon 34 lakerschamps08

wow idk bout this trade… but we c wat happens. i know boss48 will be mad if this trade happens… lol

  35. Gravatar Icon 35 phill

i hope this trade happens….lamar needs to be traded.

  36. Gravatar Icon 36 BringDFishBack

What does it take for you guys to believe that Odom won’t be traded? Do they actually have to come out and say he won’t? Oh wait, they already did that.

  37. Gravatar Icon 37 Lakerspau24

keep odom espn has proved that odom is a better shooter and he could take it to the rim artest needs at least 15 shots to get his 20 points odom could just shoot 8 and have 20 points ODOM IS STAYING IN L.A.

  38. Gravatar Icon 38 pjt

Would Sac do a trade with the Lakers? To get Artest we would have to sacrifice a Farmar, or a Ariza sort of player, or maybe even Odom, does Sac want Odom? Even if the Lakers would have to take on a 2nd player’s contract, this would be a good trade…

  39. Gravatar Icon 39 RoCa24

The only players that we have to ship out are mihm, mbenga,newble,vlad-rad and maybe luke. Instead we can add artest or josh smith, francisco elson, posey or bring back either mo evans or d-george,these two guys know bout the triangle offense and and knock ot 3 pointers.

  40. Gravatar Icon 40 RoCa24

ESPN has proved that a PF gets more points on less shots BECAUSE HE’S ALWAYS NEAR THE BASKET!!!

Jesus christ people you cannot compare a SF to a PF with stats. It’s moronic.

  45. Gravatar Icon 45 D Lo

    sorry, **proven.

i’d much rather have a guy that brings it every night and is consistent and plays D than a friggin ADD air head with all the talent in the world but only shows it once a week.

  46. Gravatar Icon 46 Dracul

If the Lakers wait another year, they can get Artest for free essentially (meaning they wont have to trade anyone for him). Odom should be kept, the guy is still young and he can still get you 14ppg. If anything, he can come off the bench.

  47. Gravatar Icon 47 yellowpurplefever

That rumor on Josh Smith is Awesome. Mitch do it or the Clippers will. Josh is young and athletic also lefty for a lefty, perfect. Can we throw in V-lady for Childress

whats to think about . . . another SF?

    focus on needs

  52. Gravatar Icon 52 lakerferlife7

wow when the fuk does lo consitantly score 20 points…..and wit artest his defense will cause more turnovers and bad shots which means he can shoot those 6 extra shots to score 20……LAMAR HAS PROVEN HE ISNT SMART ENOUGH FOR THE TRIANGLE BRING IN ARTEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  53. Gravatar Icon 53 lakers625

    KEEP LO…

TRADE WALTON, MIHM, KARL, BHENGA, RAD FOR ARTEST AND THOMAS!!!!!!!!!

  54. Gravatar Icon 54 DCLAKER

They take one of ours….WE TAKE ONE THEIRS,KELENNA AZUBUIKE?!?

  55. Gravatar Icon 55 david

getting artest would be great but not likely but the barnes scenario sound like a good we already have two bruins on our team why not a third

  56. Gravatar Icon 56 lakers4life

lo and sasha for josh smith is the worst trade ever

  57. Gravatar Icon 57 lakers4life
  58. Gravatar Icon 58 Dante

Even though everyone says that we are overloaded at the shooting forward spot, we still need a real shooting forward!!! Lamar is too inconsistant and can’t spread the floor in the triangle because he lacks the three point shot but he a great rebounder. Ariza is an athletic, local guy with a lot of potential but he can’t shoot the three either. Vlad can drain threes but sucks at defense and pretty much everything else. Luke is average on a good day at about everything he does. I think we should trade vlad because he is the worst. Keep Luke and Ariza as backups and try to see how lamar does at the three spot. Who knows, maybe with pau and bynum he succeeds. Just give it one more year and we will have 15 million off the books right there!

I THINK THE LAKERS SHOULD GO HARD AFTER POSEY,IF WE CAN GET HIM,THER WOULD BE NO NEED FOR ARTEST…BESIDES I’M NOT CRAZY ABOUT LOSING ODOM…HE HAS MULTIPLE SKILLS, REBOUNDS LEAD THE BREAK,SLASH, CAN SEE THE FLOOR, HE WORKS WELL WITH PAU IN THE HIGH LO OFFENSE…ARTEST IS BETTER AT DEFENSE AND THAT’S ABOUT IT…I ALSO THINK IF ARTEST GET INTO THAT L.A. LIMELIGHT HE COULD BE TROUBLE, HE LOVES THE ATTENTION AND HE LOVE THE MEDIA…IF HE THINK HE’S THE REASON THAT L.A WINS A TITLE NEXT YEAR, WATCH OUT!
POSEY IS A PROVEN DEFENDER WITHOUT ALL THE HYPE…PROVEN ROLE PLAYER ON 2 TITLE TEAMS.

    GET POSEY…KEEP RONNY…KEEP LAMAR…LATER SASHA

TTheres some many option and ifs thats could happen and the thing is that the biggest move that lakers are gonna make is most likely resigning sasha and turiaf

  61. Gravatar Icon 61 getgasol

We CAN NOT give up Odom yet. Not for anyone. We have to see our big 4 together in action first. If we don’t get it done this year, Artest is a free agent next year and we can get him without sacrificing any players.

If we can get Artest without losing any of our big 4, we can talk.
