Lakers contact Garbajosa, Gasol has talked, wants him on Lakers!

This is interesting news. According to spanish newspaper MARCA, Jorge Garbajosa (ex-Toronto Raptors, PF) has an offer from the Lakers. However, the biggest piece of info is the talk of moving Odom or Radmanovic. If true, the Lakers are looking to make a big trade involving Rad, Odom or both:

  • UPDATE: Pau: “I would like to take Garbajosa in Los Angeles.” Jorge is a great player, he reads the game like few others and is one of those players who makes any team better. We would be well able to count on a player like him. ”
  • UPDATE: Garbajosa’s agents have been contacted by the Lakers, he is almost completely recovered from his injury and that he would be the replacement for Turiaf. Asked what he thought about the Lakers’ interest, Jorge said: “I’m flattered. The Lakers are one of those teams that any player would want to play for and the fact that Pau is there is a further incentive.”
  • Garbajosa said this about becoming a Laker: Surely Pau has put a good word for me. I have no problem wearing gold”
  • Garbajosa had a nasty ankle injury in which the Raptors terminated his contract for.
  • According to this newspaper, Garbajosa will be signed in order to replace Lamar Odom or Vlade Radmanovic (that will be traded)?
  • Garbajosa is a big PF perhaps to replace Turiaf. He’s big, can play defense and hit the 3-ball.
  • No other information about salaries or whatsoever. Marca also says San Antonio is interested too.
  • He will be joining Pau in the Olympics, they know eachothers games quite well.

Seems like there is definite interest on both sides! Let’s get it done! He’d be a secure backup for Turiaf (assuming we lose him to free agency).

The biggest piece of news is the trade speculation involving Odom/Vlad.

  2. LD2k says:

He averaged 8.5 points and 5 boards, in 67 games, averaging 28 minutes,in 2006, made first team all rookie. then had the injury in March 2007. Again, if signed to the minimum, for one year, being assured that he’s 100% healthy, decent replacement for Turiaf.

  3. lakaluva says:

WOW!!! Another soft Euro added to a soft team… with a bum ankle to boot!!! Good job Mitch, I hope this is the deceptive piece to a much bigger trade:(

  4. ek says:

Translated in Spanish it only says Odom OR Vlade are only “rumored” to be traded…and if so for who? “Jorge would be the spare part of Lamar Odom or Radmanovic, surrounded in rumors of crossings”.

  5. LAKing says:

Wow, the Lakers are seriously making a push for Ron Artest. I really hope to see Ron Artest in a Lakers uniform.

That’s exactly what I was going to say lakers are going for artest and maybe they will try to use vlad instead of odom in a trade for artest. But that won’t work we aint dealing with Memphis. It will take odom and lakers willing to take back kenny thomas

  7. Miguel says:

Garbajosa is amazing 7-8th player for the lakers.

  8. davit says:

this wont happpin for sure kobe went let it happin he knows lamar has to stay for a contending team mabe vlady ONLY but if not then just leave it alone secure sasha and ronny get bynum and go for a championship they dont aboustly NEED this guy

  9. Whatsa says:

    YES, TRADE VLAD.

  10. gugy says:

    Trade Vlad and Luke, PLEASE!!!!!!

  11. ricky says:

at this time, its still a rumor, but if it has any truth behind it i think that its just a small move within a huge plan that mitch is trying to make happen in order to get artest. this is finally getting a bit more exciting now. i really do think the lakers are going to push for artest.

    Yes, it makes things interesting.

  13. daboss1848 says:

a different translation of same newspaper:
José Luis Martínez y Nacho Duque report that Garbajosa would have to negotiate his contract as a free agent. He may be a spare part with Lamar Odom or Vladimir Radmanovic, but both are surrounded with trade rumors. San Antonio also has shown interest in Garbajosa.

Lo and Vlad surrounded by rumors is far different from the implication above . . . this is just a signing

We have 10 guys on roster – need 5 more . . . we can get 5 rooks or gamble on some vets who can play – thats what this is, a gamble on an injured vet.

Are u racist or somewhat? I´m sure u are one of that racist guys who only want USA players in the NBA u.u

I´m telling you, guys. Marca isn´t a trusted source of information, it usually invents some news (the majority involving Real Madrid). They confirmed one month ago Calderon was going to the Knicks and Marc Gasol was going to Real Madrid and you see where are they playing.

  15. FOXXY says:

WHY WOULD WE GIVE UP LAMAR FOR A PLAYER WITH A BUM ANKLE???????????? DOESNT MAKE SENSE AT ALL!!!!!

Kobe will not interfere with Mitch he even said that in the exit interview’s and I’m pretty damn sure Kobe will choose artest over odom any damn day of the week hell any day of the year

  18. Whatsa says:

[Comment ID #44732 Will Be Quoted Here]

Wait, I don’t get how this is a move to get Artest o_o

  19. Vanessa says:

the translation is wrong. they are not trading LO or Vlad for him, just that there’ve been rumors of an LO and Vlade w/ X team.

  20. DCLAKER says:

HELL NO!Mitch..wha..I can’t believe this?!?Yes he’s a good shooter but he’s just like Vlad(We all seen him vs Orlando).I swear, this the ONLY time when I can’t stand Mitch ’cause he doesn’t see the WRITING ON THE WALL and that’s gettin’ some “FLAVOR” on this team, remember what happened last summer?

I am SICK of this international BUTT KISSIN’when we have qualified AMERICANS who can do the job,Gasol is ALL we need(I prefer Spaniards and Argentinians,Dirk N. is waaaaaay softer than Gasol).

I don’t think alot us remember the story of Phil and Kukoc when,to make a long story short, took Toni to THE HOOD OF SOUTHSIDE CHITOWN(My Father raise in Chi-Town,BIG UPS)and told him go and get in…well,3 championship later.

TIME TO GO BACK TO THE HOOD(THAT’S WHY BOSTON KICKED OUR $$$,period)!! And yes,Caucasians live in the hood too, they are BROTHERS ALSO(KURT RAMBIS)!!!

  21. lakaluva says:

That´s the racist quote I want to quote. Sorry for the mistake, LAKing ^^U

So! Euro players are soft! He has a bad ankle! Those are facts!

  22. lakerfan81 says:

Garbajosa is more likely to replace Turiaf.

I love the idea of Garbajosa. The type of guy anyone would want on your team. Does whatever is needed to win, hits a shot (and he can stretch out to the 3) fights for a big rebounds, fight for loose balls, will get physical if its needed.

The only concern is health, but we will get to see how is health is in the Olympics.

  23. LD2k says:

[Comment ID #44739 Will Be Quoted Here]
They wouldn’t trade for HIM, but the article sort of makes you think that the Lakers have a master plan of what they want to do.

  24. LD2k says:

    From HoopsHype’s player profile:

“More than decent three-point shooter… High basketball IQ… Good defender… Can play both forward spots… Brings a lot of intangibles… Won’s score much in the paint… Not very athletic.”

  25. STF2010 says:

    F U C K THE LAKERS NATION!!!

  26. shakobe says:

hi guys this is what i found out http://www.marca.com/edicion/marca/balo … 44924.html
    and the translation is this

Jorge Garbajosa has the open doors to initiate a second adventure in the NBA. It would enter again in the best League of the world stepping a red carpet, as that of Hollywood. Exactly the team that more fence remains of the mecca of the movies is the one that more interest has shown for him. The newspaper MARK advances that the Lakers of its friend Pau Gasol have done him to arrive an offering and the wing-center values it as deserves.

  27. John Barry Sux says:

See if this move means we are going to get him for cheap because of his buyout situation and get rid of Vlad than it is not a good move but a GREAT MOVE. But you cant have him Vlad and Luke on the same team. You just cant. How many soft whitees can one team have haha. From what im hearing its not that Jorge cant play , its a disagreement between management and him about playing in the Olympics on his healing leg. This move and possibly the signing of a Posey type player and we are golden. I also think i like the artest for Odom swap as long as we dont take on any bad contracts from the kings. I dont think the lakers will trade odom until they have seen the frontline of Pau, Bynum, and Odom in action. Look for a mid season trade if it doesnt click thought.

  28. LD2k says:

[Comment ID #44747 Will Be Quoted Here]
? Watch the language, and why (bleep) us?

  29. Whatsa says:

Well guys.. it’s a good move because of the money Radman’s making from us, he has a very expensive contract despite how mediocre he is. If we trade him for Garbajosa.. we’ll get a back-up power foward that can be a decent replacement for Turiaf.

  30. lskerfan567 says:

[Comment ID #44732 Will Be Quoted Here]

IF WE TRADE FOR ARTEST OR LEEP LO, I THINK IF ETHIER ONE BECOMES A LAKER THEY WOULD GET INJURED AND ARIZA WOULD EMERGE AS THE STARTING FORWARD, HE WILL BE THE NEXT ARTEST, THEN WE HAVE TO FOCUS SIGNING ARIZA TO AN EXTENSION

  31. John Barry Sux says:

Not a racist quote, just the truth and EVERYBODY KNOW IT but too scared to say it,THEY ARE SOFT(How many Ga-soft jokes have I heard to my face and on this site and HE’S NOT SOFT)!

Where was this guy’s defense vs Orlando when Bosh called the WHOLE TEAM OUT!

Try to make the Lakers an international team if you want but they WILL NEVER GET THAT ‘CHIP and that’s with Kobe on the team.We all seen what happened when CARON BUTLER left.

  35. kobynumm24 says:

this news made me sick. another damn euro is the last thing we need. especially for frickin lamar. god. if they need somebody to back up turiaf. sign kurt thomas. GET ARTEST

  36. Armogeddon says:

lakersfan81 is bang on with respect to Garbojosa’s game. I’m from Toronto and watched many Raptor games with Garbo in the rotation and he’s a banger, one of the toughest Euro players you’ll find. He could teach some toughness to Vlad & Walton and he would be an excellent replacement for Ronny T.
He brought a blue collar style to Toronto and has plenty of high pressure game experiences from international play. The main reason why Toronto cut him was for the offseason decision to play for his country while recovering from his knee injury…a lot of politics and insurance money was invovled – it alo cleared cap to resign Calderon.
If it goes down, heck of a pickup for the Lakers!

  37. gus26 says:

omg!!!.. it says that he would be the back up (replacement on the floor).. to either lamar or vlad.. who have been mentioned in trade rumors

  38. DCLAKER says:

THE ONLY GUY YOU TRADE LO FOR IS SHAWN MARION,TAYSHAUN PRINCE,RICHARD JEFFERSON AND….drumroll….CARON (I’m gettin’ teary eyed)BUTLER!

    Where’s Billy(Kupchak)when you need’em?!

  39. Armogeddon says:

P.S. DCLAKER and kobynumm24 – you dudes need to wake up, San Antonio basically won the title with Euros on their team!

  41. PeanutButterSpread says:

I still advocate testing out Lamar/Pau/Bynum/Kobe combo before trading Lamar away. If the trade involves Luke and Vlad on the other hand … I’m fine with that.

  42. Freshh says:

    Trading Vlad Sounds Good
And LO If It’s for Who I Think it Is[Marion/Artest]

    But
    I need you to elaborate</b

  43. kobe124 says:

Forget Vlad or Odom!!!!!!! TRADE LUKE WALTON, SHIP HIS ASSSSSS OUT!

  44. LakersFirst says:

The guy is a free agent, Toronto terminated his contract, so the Lakers don’t have to make any trades for him. The Lakers can probably sign him cheap (perhaps the $1.9M biannually exception, that is they still have it) – Cheaper than Turaif’s $4M to $5M per year.

If a trade for this guy were to happen, LO couldn’t be involved unless the Toronto were to sign him to like a $10M deal and then trade him to the Lakers for LO (i.e. sign and trade to make salaries match), but the Lakers won’t give Garbojsa a $10M contract (unless the FO is really smoking something).

  45. LakersFirst says:

    You are guys are fools

Yea, tell that to San Antonio where their big 3 is Tim Duncan (from the Virgin Islands), Manu Ginobili (from Argentina) and Tony Parker (from France). Funny how none of them are American.

How many titles do the Spurs have in the past decade? – oh yea, 4!

  46. DCLAKER says:

That’s San Antonio,THIS IS THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS,do the history.Boston got Bill Russell 11(titles),once LA got Wilt the curse was lifted,TRUTH IS TRUTH.

I’m probably the oldest on the site seein’s though I been a fan(atic)since ‘81(I just told my age,OOPS)so I KNOW who would fit ’cause I still remember how exciting it was when James Worhty got and Byron Scott, boy we need Jerry(THE REAL REASON WE GOT PAU)West,he KNEW what to do(3-peat).

  47. xtro says:

not all european players are soft. garabajosa can be a grat fit for l.a. he’s a world basketball champion. do it.

  48. lakerfan81 says:

Have any of the people complaining about Garbajosa being soft ever watched him play? Really? He is a very scrappy player, a good defender, he’s not afraid to play physical when its needed. He is the type of player that just goes out there and does what is needed. He is probably on eof the toughest European players there are. If he’s healthy and the Lakers can sign to replace ronny (since it seems like he is going to play for GS next season) it would be a great pick up.

  49. e says:

im confused on how it would all work if mitch is actually going after artest…however, if what im thinking is correct, i would not be willing to let go of lamar for him, vlad rad? in a heart beat, im sick of his apathetical defense and inconsistent three

  50. DCLAKER says:

For LO,HELL NO!Did anybody see him in the Orlado series, please answer this question?

GET MARION AND HASLEM for LO and Vlad(or Luke),THERE’S YOUR NEW DYNASTY!!!

  51. Mitch Kupchak says:

Garbojosa is going to be a great pickup. For all of you guys that don’t know him, does not know the type of blue collar style basketball he brings to the table. He is one of the scrappiest defenders I have seen in the league, and just because he’s Euro makes him an automatic “softy”?

Looks can be deceiving guys. If we do sign him, give him a chance. You might be pleasantly surprised. And he is nothing like Vlad!!!!

He is a WAAAAAAYY BETTER DEFENDER PLUS HE ISN’T AFRAID TO BANG BODIES!!!

He would be an AMAZING pickup if we DO GET HIM!

    DO IT MITCCHHH!!

  52. T-Dub says:

I think Parker is the ONLY European on the Spurs Championship teams (Duncan= Virgin Islands, Manu= South America), and he happens to be one of the best point guards in the league! We have very mediocre Europeans on the Lakers. Only Pau can even start on another NBA team.

[Comment ID #44771 Will Be Quoted Here]

lakersfirst like making (excuse my language) bich fights, he does this all the time, and what san antionio did doesnt matter cause do we have tony parker, do we have manu ginobli, and the virgin islands is u.s territory

  56. Majic "Big" Johnson says:

Relax Laker Nation, the front office is not going to trade Odom for Garbojosa. Rather Vlad for Garbojosa as a replacement for Ronny.

Even Ronny is a Frenchman so what is everyone crying about?

  58. Fantastic5LAL says:

Garbajosa the type of player you want on your team, plays good d, stretches the floor, can play 3 or 4, can guard the 3 or 4, goes to work

only thing i worry about is his ankle

JAMES POSEY, GARBAJOSA, FARMAR, SASHA, ARIZA

  59. BigThree2K9 says:

[Comment ID #44770 Will Be Quoted Here]

Even if Toronto was able to sign Garbajosa to a $10 million contract(they can’t cause their over the cap & terminated his last contract) hypothetically the numbers wouldn’t work to do a sign & trade for LO unless the Raps threw in some other players. Garbajosa’s trade value would only be 50%($5 million in this case) of the first-year salary in his new contract since he got a raise greater than 20%. Come on SwallowsFirst you forgot about the Base Year Compensation!!!

  60. LakersFirst says:

[Comment ID #44772 Will Be Quoted Here]

What do Bill Russell and Wilt have to do with today? Bill Russell won his titles in the 60’s when the NBA was comprised of no more than 14 teams (it was mainly 8 to 9 teams but in the 1968-68 season it went up to 14 teams). Not to take away from his greatness, but the game today is a lot different than the 60’s.

Why you bring up Bill Russell and Wilt to defend your ignorant statement about how we need “to go back to the hood” is completely irrelevant. I think that’s your A.D.D. kicking in.

You mention you’ve been a fan since 1981, well old wise one, you’re just about my age.

Guys, the game has changed. It is no longer a game played in the “hood”. International players are now on par with NBA players. Haven’t you noticed when the USA plays other countries that those other countries now give us competition?

Lastly, how come you keep saying Pau Gasol was brought to L.A. because of Jerry West. Jerry West himself said he had nothing to do with the Pau Gasol deal.

  61. LakersFirst says:

[Comment ID #44796 Will Be Quoted Here]

My point is you guys make such ignorant statements as “we need to go back to the hood” to get players, when the fact of the matter is INTERNATIONAL players have caught up and are now competing with the players with the hood. As of a matter of fact, of the last 5 players to win the MVP, (Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, and Steve Nash), 2 are non-American (Dirk – German, Nash – Canadian, I don’t think either of these two guys were running around the “hood”). Furthermore, Kobe is also European influenced as he grew up in Italy and his dad played in Italy.

If you can’t except the fact that international players are getting better and better, then you’re a f’n idiot.

  62. LakersFirst says:

You’re never happy with the Laker team, which is why I have always said, you are NOT a Laker fan. First you b*tchabout Mitch not trading Bynum, then you b*tched about the rest of the team, and now you’re b*tching about our international players.

Why you are here, when all you do is complain about the Lakers, is beyond me.

  63. I WOULD NOT TRADE LAMAR ODOM BUT I WILL TRADE RADMONOVICH OR WALTON FOR JORGE!!!!!!!!!!

Why is Lamar even in the discussion? Trade Vlad!

  65. DCLAKER says:

Lakerfirst, did you see Boston in the finals? Please say yes.Well to put it plain and simple…THE HOOD won.

I don’t want you think I don’t respect the international players, I do but do the math,THE POORER THE COUNTRY(or city, state) YOU PLAY IN THE MORE INSPIRED AND PASSIONATE YOU PLAY.I live in DC and this city just like LA,CHITOWN,ALL 5 BOROUGHS OF NY,TEXAS,ANYWHERE IN THE SOUTH,etc.,is flooded with crime, murder, prostitution drugs, you know the deal and just seems people rise to the occassion more.As opposed to spoon fed spoiled little rich kids who can’t live without a laptop or they’ll blow their brains out.

There’s no way I’d trade Odom for Artest unless Artest signs an extension before hand, and even then, we could do better.

Only thing the Lakers need is a SF that can play defense AND shoot 3’s. I think I’m finally ready to jump on the Pietrus bandwagon, I watched his video’s on youtube and researched him and he does seem like he’d be a perfect fit for what we need, IF he can be productive as a starter.

If I’m GM doing the exit interview, I’d have told Odom to do nothing this summer except work on defense and 3pt shooting, and Ariza strength training and 3pt shooting. If those two guys could devlop decent shots from behind the ark we wouldn’t even be having these trade discussions.

This statement you just wrote makes absolutely no sense. Please provide a quote where I said that I don’t want no “hood rats” or “ghetto mo fo’s” on the team???? I would like to know where I said this. You’re ignorance is even evident as you are now putting words in my mouth.

I can tell you don’t have the ability to properly communicate, so this conversation is going nowhere.

hey awaker85! where have you been? do u even pay attention to the nba at all?!!!

PIETRUS IS HEADED TO ORLANDO! IT’S A DONE DEAL. BEFORE YOU TYPE SOMETHING, PLEASE MAKE SUURE YOU GOT YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!

Let’s just focus on what what’s on hand now.

Garbajosa will be a great ADDITION if we are able to sign him. He is a proven “scrappy” player who is not afraid to bang bodies and dive for loose balls. A worthy competitor each night which is what we need on our squad.

  96. DCLAKER says:

OH HOW I LOVE TO START CONTROVERSY,here’s some more,Boston won with who?

Lakers won 3 straight with who?

Yes(droopy voice),San Antonio won some ‘Chips with international players but THEY WERE FROM WHERE?

The world is a Ghetto(some places have it worst than others).

you like Matt Barnes, Azubukie, and Gelebele over Garbojosa?

we dont need any of those type of players.

i also think you went to a Golden State game and sat close to there bench and shared deep conversations with all of them cause you seem to favor Warrior players to come to LA..lol jk

  107. kb4sure says:

okay lets keep lamar try bynun/gasol/odom trio get garbajosa give pau some boyfriend to be inspired and works hard on defence.but I hope that rad and luke will not be on our team trade them to a college team if possible.what about sasha he has no offer yet from other team means his not likely.even me I choose karl over him same shooter but more athletic.if we trade odom only for matrx.heard about josh smith is he free agent?

For these racists who are saying only USA players know how to play basketball:
-Winner of World Cup 2002: USA? No, Serbia!
-Winner Olympic Games 2004: USA? No, Argentina!
-Winner of World Cup 2006: USA? No, Spain!

  109. Dante says:

all i see in this is a straight up replacement for vlad. he is a better defensive player, same size and can drain the three. I will take him over vlad any day!

  110. Rpoc says:

This is the replacement for Turiaf? A shooting big man who suffered a nasty ankle sprain and soon to be 31?

    The frak!

  111. DCLAKER says:

Fantastic5lal,did you see I had Michael Gelabale(a good young talent to go with Bynum),Carl Landry….and as for the Warriors, they always play us tough and certain players just know when to shine and…THEY TOOK RONNY AND AS A LAKER..I WANT VENGENCE!

[Comment ID #44720 Will Be Quoted Here]

I hope they do that…but really, that’s just saying that Artest really stinks at basketball…I mean, the trade can only be with Odom, saying that because we won’t trade anyone else besides Odom and Radmanovic (mihm=bird contract plus he’s pretty darn good when he’s healthy, Luke is a very intellegent player in b-ball IQ and in the Triangle and can pass very well), so that’s why they want to only trade Odom and Radmanovic, but I think we really shouldn’t trade Odom for Artest, let alone Odom at all, I think we should try to keep our team in tact, and maybe dump Mihm and Radman, but overall, we shouldn’t do any trade and I “HIGHLY” doubt that we’ll sign anyone except for our draft pick, Sasha and maybe Garbajosa.

  116. LD2k says:

    New article with Gasol’s thoughts:

Pau: “I would like to take Garbajosa in Los Angeles”

The news put forward by Marcos on the interest of Los Angeles Lakers by Jorge Garbajosa, not taken by surprise by a Pau Gasol, who already knew Garbajosa for the interest he had shown his team for Sheet: “We have spoken clearly and I’d like to have in Los Angeles playing with us, but it’s a decision that does not depend on me. ”

Pau does not have many problems to justify why you’d like to have at his side: “The first thing is because my friend and a person who appreciate, but above all because it would help greatly to the team. Jorge is a great player, he reads the game like few others and is one of those players who makes any team better. We would be well able to count on a player like him. ”

The quality of Garbajosa, in his view, is unquestionable: “He has shown before that injury can play good on any NBA team.” Pau no cree that his injury will pass bill to his game: “It’s demonstrating that it is recovered, and every day will get more rhythm, which is perhaps what is missing take a little longer, but it goes over. Hopefully has no problem to play at the level we know. “

  117. DCLAKER says:

No trading LO unless it’s The Matrix(Shawn Marion),at he said he’d love to play LA…I think I’m to propose this to Billy’s father…and throw in Vlad for Haslett.

If Lamar is to traded(though I think they’ll keep’em) SM makes more since.Jorge is good but having The Matrix gives us the edge and makes faster, celtics can’t handle speed to well, plus they’re gettin’ older and where gettin’ BETTER!

  118. lskerfan567 says:

I DISAGREE WITH YOU, WE SHOULD TRADE FOR TAYSHAUN PRINCE, BUT WE BOTH AGREE THAT LO SHOULDNT BE TRADE FOR ARTEST

  119. DCLAKER says:

Agree, plus,Prince is the other guy I was thinkin’ about and this is what I was tryin to say about Jorge,LO shouldn’t be traded for him because of the injury and plus he’s NOT the facilitator that LO is but Prince and Marion would be perfect.

  120. lskerfan567 says:

ISNT JORJE A FREE AGENT, and ur rihgt on it, that who we need the matrix or prince, and i bet you anything Mitch was talkin to dumars yesterday

we wouldnt trade LO for Garbajosa.

    Garbajosa is a free agent.

  122. DCLAKER says:

I’m confused because the ARTICLE said LO or Vlad for Jorge…not me,read the article.

…Plus,Fantastic, you love when I comment so can have some type of rebuttal, man, I KNOW Y’ALL LOVE DC IN THIS !@#$&!And y’all know as much as we NEED DEFENSE(Jorge and Artest),we NEED FINISHERS,DUNKERS AND SLASHERS(Prince,Marion,Barnes, etc.),especially some who can jump over someones head when shots are missed.

  123. lskerfan567 says:
