Lakers contact Garbajosa, Gasol has talked, wants him on Lakers!

This is interesting news. According to spanish newspaper MARCA, Jorge Garbajosa (ex-Toronto Raptors, PF) has an offer from the Lakers. However, the biggest piece of info is the talk of moving Odom or Radmanovic. If true, the Lakers are looking to make a big trade involving Rad, Odom or both:

  • UPDATE: Pau: “I would like to take Garbajosa in Los Angeles.” Jorge is a great player, he reads the game like few others and is one of those players who makes any team better. We would be well able to count on a player like him. ”
  • UPDATE: Garbajosa’s agents have been contacted by the Lakers, he is almost completely recovered from his injury and that he would be the replacement for Turiaf. Asked what he thought about the Lakers’ interest, Jorge said: “I’m flattered. The Lakers are one of those teams that any player would want to play for and the fact that Pau is there is a further incentive.”
  • Garbajosa said this about becoming a Laker: Surely Pau has put a good word for me. I have no problem wearing gold”
  • Garbajosa had a nasty ankle injury in which the Raptors terminated his contract for.
  • According to this newspaper, Garbajosa will be signed in order to replace Lamar Odom or Vlade Radmanovic (that will be traded)?
  • Garbajosa is a big PF perhaps to replace Turiaf. He’s big, can play defense and hit the 3-ball.
  • No other information about salaries or whatsoever. Marca also says San Antonio is interested too.
  • He will be joining Pau in the Olympics, they know eachothers games quite well.

Seems like there is definite interest on both sides! Let’s get it done! He’d be a secure backup for Turiaf (assuming we lose him to free agency).

The biggest piece of news is the trade speculation involving Odom/Vlad.

  2. 2 LD2k

He averaged 8.5 points and 5 boards, in 67 games, averaging 28 minutes,in 2006, made first team all rookie. then had the injury in March 2007. Again, if signed to the minimum, for one year, being assured that he’s 100% healthy, decent replacement for Turiaf.

  3. 3 lakaluva

WOW!!! Another soft Euro added to a soft team… with a bum ankle to boot!!! Good job Mitch, I hope this is the deceptive piece to a much bigger trade:(

  4. 4 ek

Translated in Spanish it only says Odom OR Vlade are only “rumored” to be traded…and if so for who? “Jorge would be the spare part of Lamar Odom or Radmanovic, surrounded in rumors of crossings”.

That’s exactly what I was going to say lakers are going for artest and maybe they will try to use vlad instead of odom in a trade for artest. But that won’t work we aint dealing with Memphis. It will take odom and lakers willing to take back kenny thomas

Garbajosa is amazing 7-8th player for the lakers.

this wont happpin for sure kobe went let it happin he knows lamar has to stay for a contending team mabe vlady ONLY but if not then just leave it alone secure sasha and ronny get bynum and go for a championship they dont aboustly NEED this guy

at this time, its still a rumor, but if it has any truth behind it i think that its just a small move within a huge plan that mitch is trying to make happen in order to get artest. this is finally getting a bit more exciting now. i really do think the lakers are going to push for artest.

a different translation of same newspaper:
José Luis Martínez y Nacho Duque report that Garbajosa would have to negotiate his contract as a free agent. He may be a spare part with Lamar Odom or Vladimir Radmanovic, but both are surrounded with trade rumors. San Antonio also has shown interest in Garbajosa.

Lo and Vlad surrounded by rumors is far different from the implication above . . . this is just a signing

We have 10 guys on roster – need 5 more . . . we can get 5 rooks or gamble on some vets who can play – thats what this is, a gamble on an injured vet.

I´m telling you, guys. Marca isn´t a trusted source of information, it usually invents some news (the majority involving Real Madrid). They confirmed one month ago Calderon was going to the Knicks and Marc Gasol was going to Real Madrid and you see where are they playing.

Garbajosa is more likely to replace Turiaf.

I love the idea of Garbajosa. The type of guy anyone would want on your team. Does whatever is needed to win, hits a shot (and he can stretch out to the 3) fights for a big rebounds, fight for loose balls, will get physical if its needed.

The only concern is health, but we will get to see how is health is in the Olympics.

hi guys this is what i found out http://www.marca.com/edicion/marca/balo … 44924.html
    and the translation is this

Jorge Garbajosa has the open doors to initiate a second adventure in the NBA. It would enter again in the best League of the world stepping a red carpet, as that of Hollywood. Exactly the team that more fence remains of the mecca of the movies is the one that more interest has shown for him. The newspaper MARK advances that the Lakers of its friend Pau Gasol have done him to arrive an offering and the wing-center values it as deserves.

  27. 27 John Barry Sux

See if this move means we are going to get him for cheap because of his buyout situation and get rid of Vlad than it is not a good move but a GREAT MOVE. But you cant have him Vlad and Luke on the same team. You just cant. How many soft whitees can one team have haha. From what im hearing its not that Jorge cant play , its a disagreement between management and him about playing in the Olympics on his healing leg. This move and possibly the signing of a Posey type player and we are golden. I also think i like the artest for Odom swap as long as we dont take on any bad contracts from the kings. I dont think the lakers will trade odom until they have seen the frontline of Pau, Bynum, and Odom in action. Look for a mid season trade if it doesnt click thought.

  36. 36 Armogeddon

lakersfan81 is bang on with respect to Garbojosa’s game. I’m from Toronto and watched many Raptor games with Garbo in the rotation and he’s a banger, one of the toughest Euro players you’ll find. He could teach some toughness to Vlad & Walton and he would be an excellent replacement for Ronny T.
He brought a blue collar style to Toronto and has plenty of high pressure game experiences from international play. The main reason why Toronto cut him was for the offseason decision to play for his country while recovering from his knee injury…a lot of politics and insurance money was invovled – it alo cleared cap to resign Calderon.
If it goes down, heck of a pickup for the Lakers!

The guy is a free agent, Toronto terminated his contract, so the Lakers don’t have to make any trades for him. The Lakers can probably sign him cheap (perhaps the $1.9M biannually exception, that is they still have it) – Cheaper than Turaif’s $4M to $5M per year.

If a trade for this guy were to happen, LO couldn’t be involved unless the Toronto were to sign him to like a $10M deal and then trade him to the Lakers for LO (i.e. sign and trade to make salaries match), but the Lakers won’t give Garbojsa a $10M contract (unless the FO is really smoking something).

  48. 48 lakerfan81

Have any of the people complaining about Garbajosa being soft ever watched him play? Really? He is a very scrappy player, a good defender, he’s not afraid to play physical when its needed. He is the type of player that just goes out there and does what is needed. He is probably on eof the toughest European players there are. If he’s healthy and the Lakers can sign to replace ronny (since it seems like he is going to play for GS next season) it would be a great pick up.

Looks can be deceiving guys. If we do sign him, give him a chance. You might be pleasantly surprised. And he is nothing like Vlad!!!!

What do Bill Russell and Wilt have to do with today? Bill Russell won his titles in the 60’s when the NBA was comprised of no more than 14 teams (it was mainly 8 to 9 teams but in the 1968-68 season it went up to 14 teams). Not to take away from his greatness, but the game today is a lot different than the 60’s.

Why you bring up Bill Russell and Wilt to defend your ignorant statement about how we need “to go back to the hood” is completely irrelevant. I think that’s your A.D.D. kicking in.

You mention you’ve been a fan since 1981, well old wise one, you’re just about my age.

Guys, the game has changed. It is no longer a game played in the “hood”. International players are now on par with NBA players. Haven’t you noticed when the USA plays other countries that those other countries now give us competition?

Lastly, how come you keep saying Pau Gasol was brought to L.A. because of Jerry West. Jerry West himself said he had nothing to do with the Pau Gasol deal.

There’s no way I’d trade Odom for Artest unless Artest signs an extension before hand, and even then, we could do better.

Only thing the Lakers need is a SF that can play defense AND shoot 3’s. I think I’m finally ready to jump on the Pietrus bandwagon, I watched his video’s on youtube and researched him and he does seem like he’d be a perfect fit for what we need, IF he can be productive as a starter.

If I’m GM doing the exit interview, I’d have told Odom to do nothing this summer except work on defense and 3pt shooting, and Ariza strength training and 3pt shooting. If those two guys could devlop decent shots from behind the ark we wouldn’t even be having these trade discussions.

If I offended anybody (how about everbody,YOU DU#$%$#!!)I apologize the last thing would want to offend when the main subject is LAKERS…but you have to admit …AT LEAST IT KEEPS THE BORING FACTOR DOWN JUUUUUUST A NOTCH..at least ’til Oct.

you like Matt Barnes, Azubukie, and Gelebele over Garbojosa?

we dont need any of those type of players.

i also think you went to a Golden State game and sat close to there bench and shared deep conversations with all of them cause you seem to favor Warrior players to come to LA..lol jk

  108. 108 kb4sure

okay lets keep lamar try bynun/gasol/odom trio get garbajosa give pau some boyfriend to be inspired and works hard on defence.but I hope that rad and luke will not be on our team trade them to a college team if possible.what about sasha he has no offer yet from other team means his not likely.even me I choose karl over him same shooter but more athletic.if we trade odom only for matrx.heard about josh smith is he free agent?

For these racists who are saying only USA players know how to play basketball:
-Winner of World Cup 2002: USA? No, Serbia!
-Winner Olympic Games 2004: USA? No, Argentina!
-Winner of World Cup 2006: USA? No, Spain!

  110. 110 Dante

all i see in this is a straight up replacement for vlad. he is a better defensive player, same size and can drain the three. I will take him over vlad any day!

  111. 111 Rpoc

This is the replacement for Turiaf? A shooting big man who suffered a nasty ankle sprain and soon to be 31?

    The frak!

  112. 112 DCLAKER

Fantastic5lal,did you see I had Michael Gelabale(a good young talent to go with Bynum),Carl Landry….and as for the Warriors, they always play us tough and certain players just know when to shine and…THEY TOOK RONNY AND AS A LAKER..I WANT VENGENCE!

Wow, the Lakers are seriously making a push for Ron Artest. I really hope to see Ron Artest in a Lakers uniform.

That’s exactly what I was going to say lakers are going for artest and maybe they will try to use vlad instead of odom in a trade for artest. But that won’t work we aint dealing with Memphis. It will take odom and lakers willing to take back kenny thomas

I hope they do that…but really, that’s just saying that Artest really stinks at basketball…I mean, the trade can only be with Odom, saying that because we won’t trade anyone else besides Odom and Radmanovic (mihm=bird contract plus he’s pretty darn good when he’s healthy, Luke is a very intellegent player in b-ball IQ and in the Triangle and can pass very well), so that’s why they want to only trade Odom and Radmanovic, but I think we really shouldn’t trade Odom for Artest, let alone Odom at all, I think we should try to keep our team in tact, and maybe dump Mihm and Radman, but overall, we shouldn’t do any trade and I “HIGHLY” doubt that we’ll sign anyone except for our draft pick, Sasha and maybe Garbajosa.

    New article with Gasol’s thoughts:

Pau: “I would like to take Garbajosa in Los Angeles”

The news put forward by Marcos on the interest of Los Angeles Lakers by Jorge Garbajosa, not taken by surprise by a Pau Gasol, who already knew Garbajosa for the interest he had shown his team for Sheet: “We have spoken clearly and I’d like to have in Los Angeles playing with us, but it’s a decision that does not depend on me. ”

Pau does not have many problems to justify why you’d like to have at his side: “The first thing is because my friend and a person who appreciate, but above all because it would help greatly to the team. Jorge is a great player, he reads the game like few others and is one of those players who makes any team better. We would be well able to count on a player like him. ”

The quality of Garbajosa, in his view, is unquestionable: “He has shown before that injury can play good on any NBA team.” Pau no cree that his injury will pass bill to his game: “It’s demonstrating that it is recovered, and every day will get more rhythm, which is perhaps what is missing take a little longer, but it goes over. Hopefully has no problem to play at the level we know. “

No trading LO unless it’s The Matrix(Shawn Marion),at he said he’d love to play LA…I think I’m to propose this to Billy’s father…and throw in Vlad for Haslett.

If Lamar is to traded(though I think they’ll keep’em) SM makes more since.Jorge is good but having The Matrix gives us the edge and makes faster, celtics can’t handle speed to well, plus they’re gettin’ older and where gettin’ BETTER!

I DISAGREE WITH YOU, WE SHOULD TRADE FOR TAYSHAUN PRINCE, BUT WE BOTH AGREE THAT LO SHOULDNT BE TRADE FOR ARTEST

  120. 120 DCLAKER

Agree, plus,Prince is the other guy I was thinkin’ about and this is what I was tryin to say about Jorge,LO shouldn’t be traded for him because of the injury and plus he’s NOT the facilitator that LO is but Prince and Marion would be perfect.

  121. 121 lskerfan567

ISNT JORJE A FREE AGENT, and ur rihgt on it, that who we need the matrix or prince, and i bet you anything Mitch was talkin to dumars yesterday

…Plus,Fantastic, you love when I comment so can have some type of rebuttal, man, I KNOW Y’ALL LOVE DC IN THIS !@#$&!And y’all know as much as we NEED DEFENSE(Jorge and Artest),we NEED FINISHERS,DUNKERS AND SLASHERS(Prince,Marion,Barnes, etc.),especially some who can jump over someones head when shots are missed.

No Matt Barnes even the Warriors let him go. Remember that foul he did on Ronny, I never forget that, just like Bell did to Kobe. I’d love Marion or Tayshawn. Its not likely to happen. Just keep on wishing
