SacBee: Kings might be open to Artest/Williams/Douby for Odom?

A Sac Bee columnist speculates? Or perhaps hints to us that the Kings might be open to Artest + Shelden Williams + Quincy Douby for Lamar Odom. The article is titled “The other Lakers-Kings trade that would work.” Would you do the trade now? Sound off!

Sacramento Bee: This is the potential compromise. Kenny Thomas out, Shelden Williams and Quincy Douby in. No difference to the Kings in lineup impact, big difference to the Lakers in money.

It’s still Ron Artest for Lamar Odom at the bottom line, except the salary-cap ballast has changed and the Lakers, in this version that will undoubtedly be discussed between the teams, if it hasn’t been already, get away from Thomas and his $17.3375 million due the next two seasons. For a team paying the dollar-for-dollar luxury tax, as L.A. is, that’s actually a $34.675-million hit for Thomas. You can see the hesitation.

Williams is on the books for $3.4 million in 2008-09 and Douby for $1.43, along with Artest’s $7.4 to match up under the cap rules to Odom’s $14.15 million. Nearly 5 mil combined for a power forward that never plays and a guard that never plays is a bad thing. But Williams and Douby have guaranteed money next season only while Thomas is down for two more and, specifically, $8.775 million in the second one. That’s the key.

Taking Artest, Williams and Douby, the Lakers are bringing on $12.23 million ($24.46 including the luxury tax) for 2008-09 and nothing after. Total commitment: $24.46 million.

Taking Artest and Thomas, the Lakers are bringing on $16 million ($32 mil) for 2008-09 and $8.775 ($17.55 mil). Total commitment: $49.55.

Obviously a massive difference.

The Lakers Should Do This Trade

by the end of 2008-09 season they will have lots of cap room.

in a heart beat. we get a big in return to replace turiaf and scorer in douby to replace sashe if he leaves. do this mitch.

  4. Gravatar Icon 4 Unstoppable423

man this is a sweet trade but i love havin LO and i would hate to give him up for artest that is crazy n can just leave our team next season as a free agent

  5. Gravatar Icon 5 DCLAKER

KEEP LO! KEEP LO! KEEP LO! Trade Vlad,PLEASE(I DON’T CARE WHAT HIS CONTRACT IS)!

  6. Gravatar Icon 6 The Cougar

that would be almost as a good as kwame and crit for Gasol! id do it in a heartbeat

  7. Gravatar Icon 7 gspence001

this is such a steal for artest..if this article is valid artest might just fall into our lap

  8. Gravatar Icon 8 xtro

do it!! shelden williams will be so happy to play in L.A. he is candace parker’s significant other i believe. pull the trigger mitch!!!

  9. Gravatar Icon 9 e

this would be a great trade

  10. Gravatar Icon 10 Kobe2k9

I’d also do this in a heartbeat, but Rasheed would be nice too, but i need to vent because im kinda getting sick of it so here i go: i dont understand why people like LO, they need to stop listening to what writers and so-called basketball analyst, just watch the video of his games, he’s mentally weak, no jumpshot, ballhandling skills way overrated, a liability in crunch time, remember him airballing a game winning jumpshot, and all this versatility stuff like makes me laugh, Tayshaun Prince is versatile, not LO. LO is what he is now, he’s not going to change, we need a different mindset in our team, no more “SOFTIES”. I understand he’s a nice person, and people might feel sorry for him, but his game doesn’t fit with what we need, and real Laker team fans not LO fans understand that we need to do what’s best for our team,”nobody’s untouchable besides Kobe” and he’s not in our best interest, and I am also getting tired of people suggesting trades or things that will never happen nor can’t like waiving players LUKE AND VLADE, or just trading them two for one good player even though I would love for this to happen in my lifetime, but if you understand basketball and how the NBA works that will never happen ever! Go LAKERS!

wat makes everyone think that lamars not gnna leave at the end of the season??????we all thought that there was no way turiaf would leave..and look what happened…everyone keeps sayin that lamar will take a pay cut….how the fuuck would anybody no that…

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 Short Diezel

please tell me why some people are stuck on keeping lamar? Artest can do EVERYTHING lamar can do and better!

this is as close as we are going to get to a perfect trade for Lamar without giving up too much money and/or players.. we get a quality small forward on both sides of the court, and a decent back-up power forward to take Turiaf’s position…

if it were up to me, Lamar would be packing his bags

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 lakerfan81

What about reboudning? If they Lakers trade Odom, they lose their best rebounder. No guarantee that Bynum comes back strong, and able to play significant minutes. If you trade Odom, that leaves the front court depth as Gasol (who is playing in the Olympics and has been injury prone for the last few season), Bynum (who is 20, coming back from a knee injury, and has only played well in 30 NBA games, Mihm (who hasn’t been able tp play in 2 1/2 seasons) and (Sheldon Williams who couldn’t even get off the bench on a bad Sac team) not exactly the kind of front court depth that intimidates anyone.

  16. Gravatar Icon 16 Kobefan11

    DO IT MITCH!!!

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 BringDFishBack

Ok, there’s quite a few reasons why this will never go down and why it should never. First of all, the Kings would have to be morons. They’re in a rebuilding process and they are going to trade 2 of their best prospects? No, never gonna happen. Second, the Lakers have no use for another young point guard. They are set at that position. When Fish’s contract is up in 2 years, Farmar will be completely ready to fulfill the starting role. Not only that, but they have Sun Yue waiting to come in as soon as they need him, so there is no use in getting Douby. Third, the Lakers will not and should not trade Odom. What happens when Bynum has a set back to start the season? What happens when he is slow coming back? What happens when he can’t play 30-35 minutes right away? Who is going to play power foward? Odom is extremely valuable to this team at this point. He can play PF if needed, which is likely, but can also play SF once Bynum is fully healthy. There’s only a few other guys in the league that can do that, but Odom knows and understands the triangle and all the guys on the team. More importantly, taking such a major component off the team would completely screw up the chemistry and it would have to be completely rebuilt. Don’t do it.

What the hell are you on? Artest can grab 20 boards in a game? He can average 10 rebounds for a season? He can play point well in the triangle? He can play PF and guard guys who are 7-0? Get real. Sorry, but Artest is not a PF. For now, the Lakers need someone who can play both the PF and SF positions and be flexible around how Bynum returns.

I keep hearing this “What about our rebounding?”. I didnt see much rebounding from LO in the finals. he was no factor. he is a nice player, but he is the only piece they can trade to make themselves tougher. plus it looks like they arent gonna resign him. this day of him be trading was coming ever since he got traded here. yea we lose some size but bostons bigs werent that big when you compare perkins and pj to LO and Pau and they pushed the lakers around. they are more physical, big difference between bigger and physical. they even push bynum around in the regular season. artest will add toughness and defense. plus he is a good scorer, strong driver, good outside shooter and makes plays as well with passing.

Ever wonder why all the Artest rumors are coming from the SAC BEE!?!?!?! Because everyone in Sacramento wants this trade to happen. They are a loosing team with a star who has a loosing attitude (as of right now anyway). The Kings FO isn’t stupid. They know with a Bynum, Gasol and Odom front court the Lakers will be the best interior defensive and def and off rebounding team in the league and they will be more than glad to take that away from us. We have a starting lineup of Fisher, Kobe, Odom, Gasol, and Bynum. Tell me how many GM’s would kill for that starting 5? FOR THE LAST TIME, WE DO NOT NEED TO TRADE LO, STOP POSTING THESE TRADE RUMORS FOR SACRAMENTO AND STOP WANTING A TRADE ONLY BECAUSE YOU WANT TO SHOW OFF A NEW JERSEY RATHER THEN CARE FOR WHATS BEST FOR THE TEAM. Hope I put a rest to the rumors for good so we can concentrate on team USA and winning a title with the team we already have. LOL, glad I got that of my chest.

What am I on? I think you should be asking yourself that question..

Lamar will NOT be playing power forward anymore so his boards will be limited.. he will be playing small forward.. think about it unless it hurts you too much..

Lamar can NOT play small forward.. why? cause he has no mid-range jumpshot, can’t drive to the left, can’t drive to the right without causing a charge, inconsistent at the free throw line, mediocre passing skills, he will have to chase guys smaller than him exerting his energy on the offensive end and causing unnecessary fouls which will put him and the team in foul trouble.. his mental state is fragile to say the least..etc. etc..

Artest can play 3 positions if need be (shooting guard, small and power forward).. obviously he is most effective as a small forward but he is capable of playing all of them.. he can play with his back to the basket or straight up.. sweet mid-range jumpshot.. can hit from beyond the arc.. consistent free throw %, HUGE defensive presence which is obviously what we were missing last season.. brings INTENSITY into the game.. is NOT afraid of anyone..he is a threat on boths sides of the court

and even if it takes Bynum a little time to come back, I can guarantee that the Lakers will be a more well rounded and successful team with Artest in the line-up.. I’ll take Kobe/ARTEST/Pau/Bynum before Kobe/Lamar/Pau/Bynum anyday of the week…

  27. Gravatar Icon 27 LakersFirst

Financially for the Lakers, this is the best they are going to get from Sac. The Lakers will only trade LO for expiring contracts, and this one does that. Artest is an unrestricted free agent after next year, but the Lakers will probably want to resign him after next season somehow.

Taking on Kenny Thomas and the $8.5M he is owed in the 09/10 season would hurt the Lakers financial flexibility going in to the 09/10 season. Replacing Thomas with Sheldon Williams and Quincy Douby is better financially because both Willians and Douby are restricted free agents after next year (Williams has qualifying offer of $4.5M after next season and Douby has qualifying offer of $2.1M), so the Lakers could technically not extend the qualifying offers to them and let them walk after next season, thus allowing the Lakers to make a better offer to Artest’ contract extension.

FINALLY SOME INTELILGENT COMMENTS ABOUT LAMAR!
Thank you Kobe2k9 - I couldn’t have said it better myself:

“I dont understand why people like LO, they need to stop listening to what writers and so-called basketball analyst, just watch the video of his games, he’s mentally weak, no jumpshot, ballhandling skills way overrated, a liability in crunch time, remember him airballing a game winning jumpshot, and all this versatility stuff like makes me laugh, Tayshaun Prince is versatile, not LO. LO is what he is now, he’s not going to change, we need a different mindset in our team, no more “SOFTIES”. We have to understand Lamar had been with us now for FOUR YEARS now! Next year is his TENTH season as a pro! He’s been learning and studying, and we’ve been talking about his “potential” and waiting for him to become the star everyone claims he can be, but sorry folks, it ain’t happening! This guy would be a worthwhile reserve at best, but he’s way over paid for what we are getting.

Time to try to get someone who would better fill our needs. Let’s get this done Mitch before this deal dies on the vine.

The more I think about trading Odom, the less I want to do it. I think Pau is pretty soft and I’m not sold on Bynum like the rest of the world is. Bynum had 1 good half of a season and everyone thinks he’s a superstar. Yes, I was very impressed by Bynum at the beginning of the season before the injury but thats all I have seen from the guy. I hope we keep Sasha and trade Farmar.

  34. Gravatar Icon 34 ab4sure

If this is true we know the kings want to move artest and probably really want LO. Kings have shown more of their cards. I think they want to do a trade quickly before the season. They don’t want Artest to be a distraction and therefore make his value go down. Longer we wait the better price we get for Artest. IMO

I’d rather lose a bit on the rebounding side then have a soft player who can only go in one direction and cannot hit a jumpshot. Bynum, 100% or not is going to give us good rebounding as well as Pau. Throw in a big like Williams who used to be a lottery pick if I recall and a quality shooter and scorer like Douby.

Not to mention they all come cheaper then Artest and Thomas or Odom alone. I really think Williams and Douby can add and strengthen our bench even more than last year.

What the hell are you on?
And Lamar can do these things?
Seems to me he played ONE good quarted against the SuckDics.
His defense? - Please, it sucks!
His ability to play “point” - that’s a joke!

    His outside shooting is ATROCIOUS!

Any time he dribbles more than ONCE he is a charge foul waiting to happen or he ends up flinging up a goofy shot as he’s falling to the ground.

His Defense? You mean standing there waving his arms as someone drives right by him? You call that defense?
Good God! He can barely move his feet!

This guy is a RESERVE at best. What on earth do you fools see in this clown? He’s a 10 year pro who’s still struggling to figure out his game! And the amount of money we pay for this guy is beyond reason. If someone is willing to give us a quality player WE MUST DEAL THIS GUY!

WAKE UP PEOPLE! OPEN YOUR EYES!

  54. Gravatar Icon 54 Smush Walton

Sure we want to trade Smush Walton, Vlad Moronovich, and Mihm. Just getting rid of these three would be a HUGE improvement. Unfortunately, not to many teams are interested in picking up these three rags.

Lame-O is our most tradeable piece.

Oh, and I forgot to add above he is not the sharpest knife in the drawer (if you’ve ever heard him interviewed).
And the fact that he was ARRIVING at a night club after midnight the night before they flew back to Boston for game 6 says a lot about his dedication and work ethic.

Smush Walton, thank you so much for pointing out how bad this Odom is. These people who want to keep this clown just don’t know basketball. Let me add a few comments to your article. What makes me so mad at this idiot is he doesn’t even try to block shots. Instead he rather stand there and hold his hands in the air. To me that’s letting your team down not to even try, but I’m starting to see that we are wasting time trying to get these Odom lovers to see this idiot can’t and wont play. For all the people who knows Odom sucks I hope this trade goes through. Keep your fingers crossed.

If Odom somehow miraculously got Turiaf’s aggressiveness and humbled himself to Bynum’s willingness to learn, he’d be good. Same thing with Kwame. Enough said. I play ball and some days I play like crap. Sometimes I tell myself its because I lifted before playing. I’m 6′4″ and am considered pretty tall in the local gyms. All I have to say is when I play some days… and want the ball. I’ve grabbed 6 offensive boards in one possession, gotten steals, put backs, blocks… I was a hustle player. Kwame Brown and Odom have the bodies to be amazing basketball players… they just need discipline and some experience with them breaking habits and finding out that things that they usually don’t do can help. I recently practiced my left handed shot, and using my pivot foot in the post… amazing how open it gets you. As far as Artests… the only thing I can forsee as a potential downfall of the trade is another point guard (hopefully we can get rid of him) and a lineup variability loss. Keep in mind… LO Bynum and Gasol give for some VERY intricate combinations at the 4 and 5. Gasol/Bynum, Odom/Bynum, Odom/Gasol, all leads to getting lots of rest, and having constant quality size in there.

If this is true we know the kings want to move artest and probably really want LO. Kings have shown more of their cards. I think they want to do a trade quickly before the season. They don’t want Artest to be a distraction and therefore make his value go down. Longer we wait the better price we get for Artest. IMO

IM GLAD THEY TOOK OUT THOMAS (16MILL) OUT OF THE PAKAGE AS WELL,BUT I STILL WANA WAIT TILL ARTEST IS A FREE AGENT…

how to get artest with out taking on kenny thomas’s contract!!!

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=549~617~25~849~788~831&teams=23~5~13~5~13~23&te=&cash=

Lakers trade: Lamar Odom, Joe Crawford and Chris Mihm
Lakers get: Artest, JJ Hickson, and Joe Smith

CLE trade: Wally Szczerbiak, JJ Hickson, and Joe Smith
CLE get: Lamar Odom, Joe Crawford, and Kenny thomas

SAC trade: Artest and Kenny Thomas
SAC get: Wally Szczerbiak, Chris Mihm

*** If cleveland is interested in taking on another contract with a a young PG prospect in exchange for one more of their expiring contracts… we can trade V.RAD and farmar for eric snow!

    SIGN KWAME BROWN!!!

    LINE UP:

    D-fish/*(farmar)/Sasha
    kobe/Sasha/Ariza
    Artest/Ariza/Walton
    Gasol/Smith/*(V.rad)/Hickson
    Bynum/Kwame/Smith

    Fisher/ Farmar/ Douby
    Kobe/ Sasha/
    Artest/ Ariza/ Vlad/ Luke
    Gasol/ Williams
    Bynum/ Mihm

it actually doesn’t look that bad.. i think i like it.. if you know bball you can look at all the different line ups.. sliding artest to the 4 if gasol is in foul trouble with kobe to the 3 and farmar at the 2 or sasha at the 2.. with the guys on this team we could actually have a big get in foul trouble and bring in a guard.. doesn’t look bad at all..

by the way.. did anyone realize that douby dropped 32 point on us the final game of the season.. 32!!!..

Why don’t you go shopping and put something sexy on for me…

You do know that Brittany’s name and pic is probably someone else. You probably just hit on a 300lb. hairy guy that lives with his mom…
