UPDATE: Josh Powell signs with Lakers!

It’s now been confirmed. The former Clipper and high energy player is a great replacement for Turiaf in my opinion. How do you guys feel about the newest Laker?

O.C. Register: Lakers spokesman John Black just confirmed that journeyman forward Josh Powell has been signed by the Lakers.

The 6-foot-9 Powell spent the 2007-2008 season with the Clippers, primarily as a backup forward. However, he started extensively late in the season, when starting center Chris Kaman missed 17 of the final 21 games due to an ankle injury.

i dont think hes as good as turiaf =(

  2. Gravatar Icon 2 fabz24lakers

if he plays as good as ronny or better it should pay off!!!

  3. Gravatar Icon 3 LD2k

He is a HIGH energy player.

  4. Gravatar Icon 4 LakersFirst

He is an inexpensive back up power forward/center with some experience. Who did you expect the Lakers to get? Some superstar power forward that is willing to come off the bench?

  5. Gravatar Icon 5 Six45ci

Never herd of him. seen some highlights on youtube, nothing special. looks like a Development league, all star. other than that, cant really say hes a good/decent pick up, he hasnt had enough time on the floor to prove himself. all nba players have some sort of highlights.

  6. Gravatar Icon 6 E-ROC

Josh Powell reminds me of Brandon Bass. I’m glad the Lakers sign him. Now, they should sign Quinton Ross.

Guys trust me Josh Powell is a great back up. He played for the Clippers. I feel in love with him just because of his hard work. You can argue this guy works harder for the rebounds than Turiaf. Hes a great pick up. The only thing he lacks is being a great cheer leader like Roni was. Great sign I’m excited to see the young fella sign with us seriously.

  10. Gravatar Icon 10 andrewho

    Who?

Powell’s the better rebounder, and if its at the minimum, probably the better value… but Turiaf is the better player IMO

Has the potential to surprise an avid fan, but certainly no one to get excited about…

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 DCLAKER

He was good player at N.C.State,sorta like a Chris Wilcox type.

Very good move. Low cost, young player and high energy. This is a better than if the Lakers brought in Kwame Brown, Kurt Thomas or “Tractor” Traylor.

FINALLY! YES YES YES… EVER SINCE I HEARD JOSH POWELL WAS WAIVED BY THE CLIPPERS, I WAS GOING CRAZY TRYING TO GET EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT THIS GUY WOULD BE A GREAT REPLACEMENT TO RONNY TURIAF. HELL YES I WILL MISS RONNY BUT THIS IS A GREAT START. I SEEN HIM PLAY SOME FOR THE CLIPPERS LAST SEASON AND HE DID A VERY SOLID JOB IN ONLY 64 GAMES OR SO. HE HAD SIMILAR NUMBERS TO RONNY AVERAGING 5.5 PPG AND 5.6 RPG. I JUST CAN’T BELIEVE MY WISH CAME TRUE THAT THE LAKERS WOULD GO OUT AND SIGN HIM. MITCH IS MY HERO AGAIN AND I MUST SAY, EVER SINCE HE STOOD PAT IN NOT TRADING BYNUM AND MAKING THE HUGE TRADE FOR GASOL, HE SURE AS HELL GOT SOME HIDDEN EXECUTIVE GM TALENT.

IM SO FREAKING EXCITED NOW. OUR ROSTER IS PRETTY MUCH COMPLETE WITH HIS SIGNING, THE ONLY PROBLEM NOW IS WHICH GUARDS TO KEEP SINCE WE HAVE KARL, CRAWFORD, MITCHELL, AND YUE. LUCKILY ITS A GOOD PROBLEM TO HAVE =)

    JUST IMAGINE OUR ROSTER

    C BYNUM
    F GASOL
    F ODOM
    G BRYANT
    G FISHER

    C MIHM
    F POWELL
    F RADMANOVIC
    F ARIZA
    F WALTON
    G VUJACIC
    G KARL/CRAWFORD/MITCHELL

  34. Gravatar Icon 34 DCLAKER

Corey Bynum, wait ’til we play the 1st game of the season vs. The Blazers…then ask me.

  35. Gravatar Icon 35 Banzai

sweet! if Powell plays really good then that could mean less playing time for Luke!!!!!!!

  36. Gravatar Icon 36 ricky

mitch is making some very nice moves right now, sure they are under-the-radar-type acquisitions but they will help us nonetheless. we are picking up some quality role players and thats what this team needs, solid role players to compliment our new fab 4 of bynum, bryant, gasol, and odom. mitch is hella awesome for signing him, i really wanted him on our roster to replace ronny ever since the clips waived him. =)

we have some serious depth on our roster now with powell helping to replace ronny

C bynun, mihm (mbenga if re-signed??)
    F gasol, powell, radmanovic
    F odom, ariza, walton
    G bryant, vujacic, karl (crawford/mitchell??)
    G fisher, farmar, yue

    nope i dont. :-)

  39. Gravatar Icon 39 Lakers 24 7

Josh is a pretty dope back up, young dude, a lot of energy, not as much enthusiasm and fun as Turiaf, but he’s alright

  40. Gravatar Icon 40 MambaKB24

hes kinda like ronny in the sense that he has lots of energy
but their mindsets are kinda different
ronny wanted to block shots and rebound
powell wants to be physical on the block and post up
in the end tho, great signing
they didnt have to pay top dollar for someone whose gonna play 10-15 minutes a game, and now they dont have to play vlad at the 4 so much (which makes us “less-soft”)
i can see him playing backup minutes in the finals when pau struggles vs kg

  41. Gravatar Icon 41 lakersftw

now get rid of radman, walton, and karl

  42. Gravatar Icon 42 killo15

  43. Gravatar Icon 43 ignard

Let me get this straight, you guys are excited about a dude that got waived by the Clippers?

  44. Gravatar Icon 44 yellowpurplefever

Great Signing. Lets put him in before V-lady or Fluke> we just need Defense and Hustle plays and hard foul/hack anyone opposing teams once in awhile. Remember All ya’ll praising Mitch, don’t two face when things are a bit rocky. GO USA! LETS SPANK SPAIN!! sorry Pau. Apology accepted.

  45. Gravatar Icon 45 fred0s

    Unimpressed.

  46. Gravatar Icon 46 Robert

    josh powell???

  47. Gravatar Icon 47 kbfan24

great addition but to much for a bench player. hard to say but he will be a great replacement filling in for turiaf.

  48. Gravatar Icon 48 Freshh

The excitement basically is built up from
our Major hole we have at backup PF spot.
At least I’m assuming it is.

    Powell is a solid signing.
Did I prefer a vet big man?
    Sure.

    But I’ll take him.
At least we didn’t get Kwame.

  49. Gravatar Icon 49 Adamas

i was hoping for zo but i guess powell isn’t so bad. maybe we can still sign zo. i really don’t trust mihm to last a whole season

now, is there some way to get rid of walton? i would gladly get rid of him for quinton ross. ross has something that bill’s son is seriously lacking, balls

This is the best scouting I have of the guy without showing highlights because I don’t belive in highlights showing how good a player is at all, also, just for a little more interest for you guys, not to say that he’s any better than Turiaf in anything besides rebounding but here are their stats compared to each other:

    Minutes: Powell= 19.2, Turiaf= 18.7
    Points: Powell= 5.5, Turiaf= 6.6
    Rebounds: Powell= 5.2, Turiaf= 3.9
    Blocks: Powell= 0.4, Turiaf= 1.4
    Assists: Powell= 0.7, Turiaf= 1.6
    Steals: Powell= 0.2, Turiaf= 0.4
    Turnovers: Powell= 1.02 Turiaf=0.92
    Field Goal Percentage: Powell= 46%, Turiaf= 47.4
    Free-Throw Percentage: Powell= 72.4%, Turiaf= 75.3%

  76. Gravatar Icon 76 Smush Walton

    That’s a start.

If we are serious about improving for next year these are the three key steps:

    1. GET RID OF WALTON - he is absolutely worthless, a JOKE!

    2. GET RID OF VLAD RAD - he’s got to go!

    3. Get someone worthwhile for Lamar. This will be Lamar’s 5th year as a Laker and 10th as a pro and he’s still figuring out his game! Enough already! He’s not going to be the “next Scottie Pippen”. His outside shot is HORRENDOUS. He is a scarecrow on defense. With his awkward one handed attack with constant charge fouls and goofy falling down shots, his ball handling is a clown show. He had ONE good quarter in the finals. Its time to pull the plug on this guy! The Lakers should try to get something of value while there are still some GMs out there that think he has some value.
