NBA franchises must concern themselves with regards to the element of economics in the NBA, simply because they have to. There are rules in place to follow and if you-(meaning the franchise)-are not wise you will get stuck in a limbo state of being, such like the fine example LakersFirst made in his post.... With regards to Bynum’s value... Man, it's up there... Show me a team that will absolutely not deal their superstar for Bynum straight up... I believe there is only one at this time, and I think everyone knows who that one would be.

The problem isn't Bynum's contract - its the albatross deals of Fluke Walton (5 mil) and Vlad Radmanoglitch (6 mil)

Those guys suck up salary AND 2 slots, when you can someone pretty good for 11 million. The signing of Glitch to space the floor wasn't a bad idea judging from his previous production, but the dude completely gives up on EVERYTHING if his 3 pointer isnt falling.

Ariza added a surprising 3 point shot, which is very welcome news. At this rate he can replace Glitch in the lineup, but after seeing how well he's playing with Farmar in the 2nd unit, Phil will probably keep him where he's at.

I don't know if we can keep Farmar, Ariza AND Odom, it just depends if they're after money or other things. Farmar and Ariza are from UCLA so they're pretty content in LA.

Yea, lets be like the NY Knicks who have the freaking highest payroll and can't get any quality players and yet go nowhere.

What many people fail to realize when they say "don't count the Lakers money, they have the money", is that by having such a high payroll, the team essentially gets stuck and can't improve the team with new talent (i.e. NY Knicks). I for one as a Laker fan do not want the Lakers to be stuck with a high payroll that restricts the Lakers from improving and getting talent (not necessarily superstars, TALENT!). But hey, if you want to be like the NY Knicks, then more power to you, but I'm glad that Mitch is the GM, even though many people bashed him for years.

I wouldn't worry about the salary cap, luxury tax, Kobe paycuts or whatever. The Lakers will never have cap space to sign a superstar anyway as long as Kobe is here...he is our superstar. They can always add a player with the mid-level (6mil). Look, stop counting the Busses money. They have it...the Lakers are very profitable even if they have to pay luxury tax. Some of you guys act like its your money. I'm more concerned about guys getting money (Fluke) that could be going to better players.

Too much too soon. He hasn't proven anything yet...let alone play an entire season. Why bid against yourself? No one else would have offered him that at seasons end unless he averaged 25pts and 12 rebs...then Mitch still could have matched. I just hope we don't see a Fluke Walton Contract all over again...because of injury or whatever.

And don't worry about cap space for later years, since bad contracts will gradually wind down, with the Lakers being hooked on those particular contracts for lesser years, and therefore, can be traded away much easier.

Also, the first year is only about 8.6 mil more than what he was already guaranteed to receive, for the year 2009/10.

Actually, the first year Drew will earn only 12.4 mil with a gradual pay raise thereafter; 14 mil in the 2nd year, 15 mil in the 3rd year, and 16 mil in the 4th year, if the Lakers exercise their team option.
