BREAKING NEWS: Bynum suffers sprained right knee, MRI results coming Monday evening

Update #3: Andrew Bynum had an MRI on his right knee on Sunday but the Lakers don’t expect to know the results until Monday evening. However, there were some Memphis doctor’s that believe it’s nothing too “serious.”

O.C.Register: Pau Gasol, who obviously knows people here with his former team, said he spoke with the Memphis Grizzlies’ team doctors who examined Bynum, and they believed Bynum might have averted major damage and “it’s probably nothing too serious.”

“They seem pretty optimistic,” Gasol told me … with his fingers crossed.

After the game, Bynum said that the injury feels better than last year, “I can walk, I don’t need the crutch, it’s just there to keep pressure off of it.” And how does he feel? “I’m definitely feeling optimistic. I can’t wait to return. Supposedly, it isn’t bad as last year, and I shouldn’t miss that much time.” Good news, we say. Get well, Bynumite.

Here is a video of the incident…

TLN’s Game Preview: Lakers @ Grizzlies

grizzpre

The Lakers are in Memphis tonight for the second game of the road trip to take on the Grizzlies. The road trip started off on a good foot with a win, as the Lakers dropped a season-high 132 points on the Timberwolves.

The Lakers defense needs to improve as evidenced by the 117 points allowed which were entirely too many points to surrender to the T-Wolves. This will be round two with the Grizzlies this season, the Lakers beat them 105-96 on 12/22/08.

TLN’s Post-Game Report: Lakers @ Timberwolves

wolvespost132

kobeWe needed a rebound game to get over and forget that ugly double-overtime loss to the Bobcats Tuesday night and what we got was a relatively easy win over the Timberwolves this evening.

The game remained fairly close throughout the first-half. We struggled to make the game more than a single digit lead for any length of time because of the poor passes we were making that kept resulting in turnovers.

However, things quickly changed after halftime. Led by Kobe we were able to break open the lead in the third quarter and the game was never even close after that.

The Wolves didn’t have an answer for Bynum, who continues to play excellent ball. They weren’t able to keep us off the glass either. We out rebounded them by 10, including getting 19 offensive rebounds.

Andrew Bynum’s OFFICIAL nickname: Bynumite!

Lakers Examiner: After a two-week long process that involved a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, you have decided that Andrew Bynum’s OFFICIAL nickname is… Bynumite.

I couldn’t be happier with the nickname (though my vote went to Mountain Drew). This is exactly what I was looking for when I started the contest, so I thank those of you that suggested names and voted.

The voting results were as follows…

  1. Bynumite, 40.86%
  2. Mountain Drew, 21.09%
  3. A-Bomb, 19.03%
  4. Bynusaur, 11.06%
  5. The Brute, 7.96%

As you can see, it was more of a landslide than I expected, but with close to 700 votes we got a pretty good sense of what people were thinking.

TLN’s Game Preview: Lakers @ Timberwolves

The Lakers are in Minnesota to face the Timberwolves tonight as the team embarks on a 11-day six game road trip.

The Lakers defense needs to improve and with every loss this issue continues to arise.

The double-overtime loss to the Bobcats was very disappointing but more alarming to me was that with the team up by three points, Kobe had questionably fouled out; Lamar Odom felt the need to double-team a player and leave an open three point shooter. Also alarming was the concussion suffered by Trevor Ariza.

Pau Gasol to be named NBA All-Star reserve

Congrats, Pau! You freakin’ deserved it. Next year, Andrew Bynum. Seriously.

L.A. Times: Lakers forward Pau Gasol was selected to the Western Conference All-Stars as a reserve, The Times has learned from a source who was not authorized to announce it. Gasol was voted onto the team by NBA coaches. An official announcement will come today on TNT at 4:30 p.m.

Gasol, 28, is averaging 17.3 points, nine rebounds and 3.4 assists a game.

He has struggled in some games — including a forgetful 10-point effort Tuesday against Charlotte in which he was benched to start the second overtime — but he has come up big in the headline-grabbing games.

Gasol had 20 points and five assists in the Lakers’ Christmas Day victory over the Celtics, including numerous key baskets late in the fourth quarter. Then he had 22 points and 12 rebounds in the Lakers’ victory last week over Cleveland, making 11 of 13 shots.

Gasol was acquired last February from the Memphis Grizzlies, for whom he was an All-Star in 2006.

The All-Star Game will be played Feb. 15 in Phoenix.

Bynum will not face suspension

mistakeESPN: Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum’s foul on Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace in Tuesday night’s game has been upgraded from a Flagrant-1 to the more serious Flagrant-2 violation, the Lakers learned from the NBA on Thursday.

Wallace suffered a cracked rib and partially collapsed lung as a result of the collision. He left Staples Center on a stretcher and was taken to Centinela Hospital. Bynum told the Los Angeles Daily News on Thursday he called Wallace’s cell phone and left a message.

“I didn’t try to hurt him,” Bynum told the Daily News. “His momentum was great, and if you look at the play, once he hit me I kind of spun around because I didn’t know he was coming that fast.

“I wish him the best of luck and hope that he recovers.”

The Conclusion on Lamar Odom

odom

Lamar Odom joined the Lakers in 2004, and sitting here in 2009 he is still the most perplexing individual on this roster.

Why do I say that? Well we still can’t put a finger on Lamar. A player that some people call a walking mismatch, others call him Lamar O-dumb.

You love him then you hate him, you want to trade him but when the rumors get thick you cringe at the thought.

Regardless, you got to have deep respect for a man that has given his all to this organization. Playing with a torn labrum in the 2007 Playoffs, coming back strong mentally after the devastating and tragic death of his infant son, and a guy that has said multiple times that he wants to retire a Laker.

Well we haven’t had one of these in quite a while, but lets get this train rolling again and check out some of whats hot right now across the internet and NBA.

Larry Brown tells us Bynum waited at the bus and apologized to him

Bynum is a good guy. This is what Larry Brown said Bynum did after the game…

Charlotte Observer: “That kid waited at our bus, trying to get to Gerald, and he apologized to me,’’ Brown said. “If he had a history of that (rough play), I might feel different, but I just think it was a hard foul.’’
