BREAKING NEWS: Bynum suffers sprained right knee, MRI results coming Monday evening

Update #3: Andrew Bynum had an MRI on his right knee on Sunday but the Lakers don’t expect to know the results until Monday evening. However, there were some Memphis doctor’s that believe it’s nothing too “serious.”

O.C.Register: Pau Gasol, who obviously knows people here with his former team, said he spoke with the Memphis Grizzlies’ team doctors who examined Bynum, and they believed Bynum might have averted major damage and “it’s probably nothing too serious.”

“They seem pretty optimistic,” Gasol told me … with his fingers crossed.

After the game, Bynum said that the injury feels better than last year, “I can walk, I don’t need the crutch, it’s just there to keep pressure off of it.” And how does he feel? “I’m definitely feeling optimistic. I can’t wait to return. Supposedly, it isn’t bad as last year, and I shouldn’t miss that much time.” Good news, we say. Get well, Bynumite.

Here is a video of the incident…

Update #1: He is not putting ANY pressure on the knee and the X-Rays were negative (as expected).

Andrew Bynum has been diagnosed with a SPRAINED RIGHT KNEE. Despite the X-Ray results, Andrew will undergo an MRI tomorrow morning in New York for the final results of the injury. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andrew.

Lets me say something my brothers/sisters, Andrew may not be with us now,but that doesn’t mean we give up hope. This lakers team has matured and will win celtics with or without Andrew. So let’s all hope for the best and let’s see our team win over celtics.

  13. Anthony says:

I felt a shrill of pain go down my back when he was screaming. It’s an awful thing when any play goes down. I really hope he’ll be alright.

That injury reminds me a lot of a game against the Cavs when Kobe got hit on the shoulder.

God didn’t lay this on us…but we can rest assure Bynum will be back in full effect sooner than we can think. The X-rays are negative and the Lakeshow will roll on. I just hate the look on Kobe’s face…cause you could tell he felt HORRIBLE. They need to shake this off and keep playing ball!

  15. davi says:

Basically guys, as long at the injury wasn’t the ACL he will be back soon. If it is the ACL, let’s just hope it doesnt need surgery.

  16. Well despite how bad it looked – or didn’t – it ALL depends on the MRI results. It will be a long night tonight…

  17. lakers1fan says:

So by not putting pressure on his leg is this good or bad??? Somebody plz explain.

  18. [Comment ID #60287 Will Be Quoted Here]
People like Redd walked off the court limping – MRI showed torn MCL and ACL. Walking or no walking is never indicative of an injury with a knee. MRI results are ALL that matters.

For example, last year, X-Rays were negative, Bynum was putting pressure on knee but MRI results came back and despite putting weight on it, it was more serious than it would appear.

  19. gugy says:

    This is suc_ks!!!!!!!!!!

He was in major pain and screaming. I don’t think is a good thing. But let’s be positive.
He might be freaked out because of last season injury and maybe he is screaming more of frustration or fear thnt actually pain, Let’s hope so.

Good luck tomorrow on your MRI Bynum!

Thanks Chris! Tonight will definitely be a long night!!!! My thought and definitely prayers will be with Bynum!

The MRI tests will keep me holding my breathe all night until tomorrow morning when we receive the results.

  28. sammie says:

if bynum does not come back again for the whole season, mitch kupchak BETTER make another good trade at the deadline. Bynum’s injury last year got us Pau Gasol, let’s see who we can try to get this year? I bet it will be either Stephon Marbury or Shawn Marion, or maybe someone else.

  29. kbfan24 says:

remember thAt odom had a similar injury. He only missed a couple of games.

  30. Boris says:

Philsarmy, the fact that you’re even talking about the celtics means youre already beat…dont be so arrogant/stupid…the lakers arent promised jack shit this year

I DONT REMEMBER TIM DUNCAN EVER GETTING HURT LIKE THIS, NOT D, HOWARD, NOT LEBRON, NOT KG. BUT WE GET IT 2 YRS IN A ROW!!! AND ONLY ABOUT 2 WEEKS LATER THAN LAST YR AGAINST THE SAME TEAM!

  40. lakers1fan says:

People, do you think this trade can happen….Odom, Sasha, and someone else (except Ariza, Farmar, or Gasol) for Shaq???? Or am I just dreaming and desperate???

  41. LA4LIFE says:

Man i hate the month of JANUARY… Its $hit… Last year same month as well. Just when he is starting to play better. This is not fair.
What would the celticz do if they lose Garnet. How about the Cavs without Ilgauskas for the whole season? The Magic without Howard? Or the Spurs without Duncan?

  42. daboss1848 says:

    Lakers (adversity reigns):
    Magic – groin pull (87-88)
    Magic – hamstring (88-89)
    BScott – hamstring (88-89)
    Worthy – broken leg (82-83)
    Bynum – knee (07-08)
    Bynum – knee (08-09)

Now, its the curse of Chick, what was it b4?

  43. FT says:

UPDATE: they just interviewed AB and he said its not as bad as the last knee injury and he can walk on it (but they want him to not put too much pressure on it yet)
he was smiling throughout the interview which is a good sign so hopefully he’ll be back soon.
    lets all cross our fingers.

  44. xUSCx says:

reminds of what a guy named Andrew from last January, after he’d hurt his knee against the Grizzlies, he was walking and talking fine after the game, little did he know, he was gonna miss the rest of the season

wat u mean it is curse of chick???

  52. iamthetie says:

My friend says it’s either an MCL or a hyperextension. I just hope it’s not serious. When you’re a big dude like Andrew is, knees have to support a lot of weight.

    This sucks

  53. Pat in LA says:

anyone think maybe it’s Karma payback for the flagrant Foul
“Gerald Wallace has been released from a Los Angeles hospital after being treated for a partially collapsed lung that resulted from a flagrant foul in a game this week against the Lakers.”

Now you think maybe Bynum will probably miss about the same number of games Wallace misses. Karma doesnt take more or less from you, just exactly what you took from the other person. I am a Laker fan too but I think this was freaky how it happened so soon after what Andrew did to Wallace. I don’t suppose you diehard laker knuckleheads will see it this way but i do. Life is more spiritual than it is physical. Let this run it’s course. Drew will be better for it. I just hope he gets it.

  55. iamthetie says:

[Comment ID #60328 Will Be Quoted Here]

I don’t buy that at all. If it’s any kind of tear AB is gonna be out much longer than Gerald Wallace. Plus the flagrant foul wasn’t even done in malice, it was an accident. How can we spin something like this and say he had it coming.

  56. MR JUAN_YOURWARLOCK says:

I TOLD YOU GUYS WE SHOULD HAVE TRADED BYNUM. HE IS A CHOKER AND IS INJURY PRONE. KOBE BARELY TOUCHED HIM. IF I WAS KOBE I WOULD BE PISSED AT BYNUM AND YELLING THE WORD SOFTIE. WE BLEW IT WHEN WE COULD HAVE GOTTEN A MUCH BETTER CENTER FOR BYNUM

  57. lakers1fan says:

[Comment ID #60322 Will Be Quoted Here]

Yes!!! I agree 100% couldn’t of said it better. Please let’s give a prayer for Andrew Bynum for a speedy recovery and it not to be as serious as it looked. I already did my part this evening.

  61. e says:

the irony is just too painful…against the grizzlies in the month of january again? and to the knee? wow…right when the guy starts playing like a beast he gets screwed

    HOWEVER….

everyone in the nation forgets that we made it to the finals last year without him..no crossing our fingers, we can hope he’ll come back and even if he doesnt, kobe pau odom and the rest of the team are playing better than ever…keep your head up

  62. kb24 says:

    NOO0O0O0OO0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHIT NOOOOO

  63. Dracul says:

His knee did seem like it was slightly bent at the time of impact and Phil reported that he wasn’t putting his full weight on it at the time of the collision. It looked like Bynum was getting ready to jump for the rebound, and at least was aware of a barelling Kobe coming somewhere towards his position. From the video it wasn’t planted down locked, and his foot wasn’t fully on the ground, so Kobe’s full momentum got absorbed a bit, it could have been worse, and it could have been the same knee as last time.

At the locker room interview Bynum appeared to be in an upbeat mood about the pain and said it didn’t feel like as bad as last time, that he COULD put weight on it, and that they gave him a crutch to use regardless.

Now, if it is a sprained/hyperextended knee, this would mean about a month of recovery and another few weeks of getting back to form. At least he’s shown that he COULD be putting all together and return to dominating form over the last couple of games, much like last year.

If it’s an ACL/MCL ligament, that will mean a year.

If it’s anything else, it will be whatever it is. At least if he can walk without any immediate horrible pain, its looking better than looking worse.

    Now, on a side note:

They pointed out at the post-game:

January 13, against Grizzlies, left knee.
January 31, against Grizzlies, right knee.

Reverse the date and the opposite limb.

And what are the chances it happens to the same guy?

In my opinion, this doesn’t feel like a ‘freak’ coincidence, but more like the deliberate work of a small-powered ‘entity’ working behind the scenes, using some sort of ‘power’ alignment of the dates/numbers/vibes to achieve a goal that’s normally beyond its power capabilities – (which to us in this dimension appears like ‘bad luck’ to Bynum/Lakers/Laker fans)

The Lakers CAN continue this pace without Bynum, however they need to pick up their defense. Of course, ideally we’d want Big Drew to be in the lineup, of course, especially for the playoffs. The Laker scoring and sync is going to pretty much remain effective and efficient, they need to work harder on the defensive end because now we don’t have a shot blocker/shot alterer guarding the paint.

  71. sK says:

if you watch the replay Derek Fisher is praying for him and even lays his hand on Bynums foot and pras for him while he is being tended to…. it was cool to catch that.

moving forward … lets hope it isnt serious and I would not mind one bit if Bynum sits out future games against the Grizzlies. its not like we need him to beat them.

also i bet charlotte fans are crying karma on this one…

  72. daboss1848 says:

Last year, he had a bone bruise (extremely painful) with a displaced knee cap.

A torn ACL would not cause significant pain, especially if ur not putting any pressure on it.

Hope for the best, but be ready for the worst.

I think maybe we should try putting Chris in there. He brings size and will block up the lane with Pau. Bynum is the real deal and brings offense and D, but with Chris just focussing on D and letting Kobe, Pau and Fish run the offense, I think this may work

  107. LA says:

Maybe we should put Chris in there now with Bynum out 8 to 12 weeks with the torn Mcl. He has plenty of experience as a center and although he isn’t that effective scoring..he will cause problems for the Celtics to get in the lane…thats where they had problems at christmas and this thursday there will prob do the same thing to us that they did in the finals. I say put in Chris
