Lakers to re-sign Shannon Brown

L.A. Times: The Lakers learned a bit more about their future Monday by agreeing to terms on a contract with Shannon Brown, though Lamar Odom remained far apart in negotiations with the team that employed him the last five seasons.

On a day in which Kobe Bryant spoke out on a variety of topics, including his own contract, the Lakers pared their unrestricted free agents down to one after Brown agreed to take $4.2 million over the next two years, with the second year his option.

The reserve guard will be back with the Lakers, but there has been no movement on Odom, one of the last big-name free agents still seeking a home. Odom was on the Lakers’ books for $14.1 million last season, but the Lakers are balking at his asking price of more than $10 million a season.

“There’s really nothing to report,” said a source familiar with the negotiations who wasn’t authorized to talk publicly.

If the Lakers don’t get Odom, who they can basically sign without regard to the salary cap, their only other spending tool of note is the “biannual exception,” in which teams over the salary cap can sign a free agent to a two-year contract starting at $1.99 million next season.

Count Bryant among those who want Odom back.

“I hope so,” Bryant said. “He better be.”

Great to hear! Let’s get Odom now. :)

  5. willow says:

Actually we got him for a market price. 1 down 1 more to go. Let’s go LO!!!

  6. LakersFirst says:

    LO is that last piece.

I don’t care what anyone says, Jerry Buss is stepping up. They are going to have one of the highest payrolls (if not THE highest) in the league. Once they sign LO, their payroll will be around $90M.

  7. Nabil says:

Congrats to ShanWow! on his first multimillion dollar contract!!! I’m so happy for him. :)

Now if he keeps working his tail off with Craig Hodges, and learns from Kobe and Yoda aka DFish, his next contract could be much nicer, and he could be our future starting PG.

He’s probably our best option against the quick pgs, unless Farmar suddenly learns how to play defense.

    Now get the candyman!!!

  8. Mr.E says:

AWESOME NEWS !!!-Really looking forward to seeing Shannon play a complete season with the team-Now please resign ODOM and I love our chances against any team in the league!!!!

  9. Mitch4Pres says:

    good shi t

  10. cjm says:

  11. RJ says:

Vladimir Radmonovic…all we need to do is resign odom and we dont have to worry bout anything just signing free agents nothing else

  12. RJ says:

Radmanovic with his rainbow shot which swished or missed badly lol

  13. Colin Bizzle says:

YES! So happy right now! Now lets go get Lamar

  14. Paula says:

Incredible bargain for a guy whose talented, useful at two positions and a possible replacement for Fish when it’s his time to go. I agree with others…get LO on-board, NOW

  15. FreakinCrod says:

Awesome news! Now let’s finish up on LO

  16. sketch says:

Glad that we signed homie, but com’on Sako… at a good price? Yeah, for him maybe! LOL! Look at his stats since becoming a Laker: 7.6 MPG, .524 FG%, .667 3%, .889 FT%, 1.1 RPG, .6 APG, .2 SPG, .1 BPG, .5 TO, .5 PF, 3.2 PPG. Basically, the Lakers are paying him 4.2 million $s for the next 2 years to sit on the bench and jump in to give Fish a break for 7 and a half minutes and score like 3 points a game!

I know that Shannon Brown is nice. He’s got some upside to him and his game! He’s strong, quick, jump outta the gym, don’t waste shot attempts (real good %), and will attack that basket, and play hard nosed D. But for what he’s done so far for the team, this is a good deal for him.

He gets to practice with the BEST PLAYERS in the world in Kobe, Artest, hopefully LO, Pau, and Bynum! Oh, he’ll improve and gain confidence… that’s for sure! I just wish that Ariza would have seen it that way! This way, he can continue winning championships with us!

I agree with Nabil, congrats to Shannon on his contract and I hope that he keeps working hard with Hodges and that Kobe and the others work ethics will rub off on him!

    Sign LO and Go Lakers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LO we are waiting. BTW does anyone know of Lamar’s whereabouts he is starting to scare me. Is he on vacation?

  18. sK says:

… i kinda still feel bad for Chris Mihm.

He’s crashed out man… from that sugar high bro! Hahaha! Look, the abominable snowman will show up when it’s time to sign his contract! He’s got a good agent, they keep it on the down low unlike David Lee, Ariza’s agent, and that’s why he blew it for Ariza to stay here and play for a championship team!

Hell no! He sat on our bench all those years HURT! He took the money and couldn’t play, I don’t think he felt bad about that, so I don’t feel bad for that MILLIONAIRE not getting a ring because he finally got moved!

  21. LakersNo1 says:

I <3 this move. SB is a keeper!

  22. True Lakers Fan says:

    Great News!

  23. What Will Be says:

Sweet, he’s only going to get better a year in the Lakers system, this was huge that they retained him…

  24. desecrator92 says:

Despite reports that the Trail Blazers were preparing to make a major bid for Knicks restricted free agent David Lee, a coaching source familiar with the situation said Portland is more interested in the Lakers’ Lamar Odom. And the source described the Odom situation with Portland as “lukewarm.”
Sh*t guys, this is bad news

  25. Nabil says:

naw, lukewarm ain’t a problem. lukewalton maybe, but not lukewarm. hey, maybe that should be luke’s new nickname: LUKEWARM.

  26. freddyb says:

GREAT!!!! WE NEED BROWN AND LAMAR ODOM.

ALSO LETS TRADE ADAM MORRISON TO THE BUCKS FOR LUC MBAH A MOUTE. GREAT DEFENDER AND ROLE PLAYER

  27. Lakerboi says:

Great news. All we need is Lo and we are set.

  28. purplegoldvein says:

I like that lukewarm nickname for walton. lol

  29. i_hate_turnovers says:

this is great news… i just pray that he won’t turn out to be a contract player.

^ its not like he scored a major NBA deal, he still needs to show up and demand a big deal… i think he can pull it off!

  32. ko_believer says:

we should start a poll for artest’s jersey #!

    im with #42!!

  34. Anthony says:

Good signing. I was really hoping for the Lakers to not let go of every bit of young talent we have. I understand the future is now, but yeesh we’re gonna blow for a couple years if we don’t build something in the background.

  35. desecrator09 says:

guys, im really worried about LO. There hasnt been anything to report and thats not a good sign. If we lose him, you can tell Kobe is gonna be mad as f*ck and you can tell hes already pretty mad about losing Trevor judging by this article saying he was initially cautious when asked if the team is better with Artest. If we dont resign him, I’m sorry to say but we can kiss our repeat chances goodbye…..

  36. lakers101 says:

one down…one to go….we need to sign odom no mattter what!!

    Lamar Odom= NBA CHAMPIONS!!!

  37. YellowPurpleFever says:

    Thats FUNNY! LUKEWARM…
Congrats to Shannon. Learn the Triangle this summer so you can take Sasha’s minutes next year.
I knew this gonna happen with Shannon, I guess 3yrs/6mil, close.
But LO, he wants a big contract so Portland is in the mix.
Mitch knows that Lakers cannot afford him with that price tag.
In the end LO will be a Laker guarantee…if its for 2 years.

  38. Lakezilla says:

Kobe was being cautious out of respect to Trevor. The dude just helped him win a championship. I mean if he said in public, “hell yeah we’re a better team”, that would be a slap in the face so its basically all good PR. He basically walked the fence in his response and that was the right move. Everybody knows Ron is a better player than Trevor right now. Why do u think the Lakers moved on so quickly? Kobe knows basketball and he’s wanted Artest on the team for awhile now.

  39. Cheryle says:

Yay. So happy he made the right choice in staying. This guy is smart. Hopefully he plans on showing more of what he has this coming season. He has soo much potential…

  40. xfellerx says:

sasha is probably gone this season. and ammo. i dont care though. and i really want to sign lo. other than that i dont really care what happens as long as shannon is back.

  41. artest says:

shannon brown > ariza based on heart and intellligence

  42. Oriba says:

I actually met and spoke last night with Mychal Thompson, and he had a good feeling they will re-sign Lamar

  43. xtro says:

where in the world is Lamar. c’mon mitch. do it. sign him!

  44. LakersFirst says:

[Comment ID #78846 Will Be Quoted Here]

Uhhh, LO has got to WANT to resign. Mitch can’t sign his signature for him.

  45. imfasterthanur says:

[Comment ID #78833 Will Be Quoted Here]

I just gave you 5-stars. I completely forgot he played for the Cavaliers. The guy has so much athleticism, after losing Ariza, it was a MUST to re-sign him as our new high-energy/athletic player off of the bench.

  46. Andrew says:

[Comment ID #78851 Will Be Quoted Here]

    thanks!

  47. Jackenton says:

    yo TLN. Post this!

    http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4311624

Michael Jackson Memorial featuring Kobe and Magic speaking.

  48. DwiZ says:

We didn’t sign him for a great price, sure the 2 yr 4.2 looks nice on paper but, the Lakers are over the cap thus its more of a 2yr 8.4m on the Lakers books. Nonetheless, Shannon is a good player and I’m glad that he signed for less(Indiana offered him more) to join a proven squad where he can improve his skills over the course of a long season.

  49. Thomas says:

We need odom more than we need shannon right now!! Focus on resigning Lamar then we can resign Shannon Brown

  50. Wilt says:

This is even better than when the Sham-Wow guy got arrested. “You will be saying WOW every time”

  51. Zach says:

I completely agree with freddyb why the hell is Adam Morrison and his 5 million a year contract still on our team?? can someone please tell Mitch that if he was smart he would trade his ass for someone whos contract was like Shannon’s last season (700,000) or so and then resign Lamar! Mitch even said he wants 13 players…ok well even if we dump Morrison and keep Lamar and then play Sun Yue instead of Adam thats 13 players right there! I really hope this gets done so we are not as strapped down financially, paying a guy 5 mil to sit in street clothes, and that way can help us to resign Lamar!
