Lakers to sign Mickael Gelabale

fr_gelabale_600_5Gleabale had one of his bigger games against us a couple seasons ago. It will be interesting to see if he makes the team.

HoopsHype: The Lakers will add even more international flavor to its roster with the signing of swingman Mickael Gelabale, who will be the second French player in franchise history after Ronny Turiaf. The former Sonic will join the team for training camp on a make-good contract.

Gelabale, whose career has been recently derailed by injury problems, is understandably excited about the prospect of playing for the NBA champions.

“It’s a dream come true for me,” Gelabale said. “It’s a legendary team, with guys like Magic, Kareem, Kobe… I was a fan of the team as a kid.”

Gelabale’s second season with the Sonics, where he averaged 4.5 ppg and 2.1, was cut short due to to an ACL injury. He’s been trying to recover from it for the last year and a half, even making an appearance in the D-League last season with the L.A. Defenders, the Lakers’ affiliate.

The French swingman claims he’s fully recovered now.

i thinks its good, but he will not see too much playing time.

  2. desecrator93 says:

LMAO, if this dude makes the team, it will eclipse Sun Yue as the most pointless signing in Laker history.

I think this dude can be a good scorer off the bench.

    It’s GELABALLIN’ TIME!

  4. gale bail says:

he’s a poor man’s trevor ariza, a good defender, and shot 43% from the 3.

  5. Eidraq says:

good back up for artest..i would like to see him play some minutes at least

  6. LakersFirst says:

This will be the Lakers 4th Small Forward – Artest, Walton, Morrison and now Gelabale, hmmm, I wonder if the Lakers are up to some other moves?

  7. xtro says:

great pick-up. he is an athletic defender/rebounder. hope management let’s him stay for the duration of the season.

  8. Gelabale gives the Lakers a solid option at either small forward or shooting guard. I do remember him playing good “D” against the Lakers when he was with, then, the Sonics. You can never have enough athletic defenders in your team, especially when you’re the defending champs.

  9. Joey says:

Maybe he could take Sasha’s place as the backup SG?

hows he a good defender? kobe used to light him up

Two words: camp fodder. He is not making the team, neither will tony Gaffney or any other player that is signed in the next two weeks. The Lakers will have 13 players on the roster and no more.

  12. gus26 says:

he will replace morrison on the roster… look for morrison to get traded for a future second rounder soon….

why?.. because trading morrison for nothing made no sense for the team without having another sf to take his place.. but having adam on the team made no finanacial sense..

trading morrison esentially for nothing and then signing this guy will save the team about 10 million bucks.. anytime you can save 10 million dollars without effecting your team too much you’re gonna do it..

    • Bshawk says:

Tru dat. Send Morrison to the D-leauge. Cryin little bee-ach.

    • KeyTurn says:

Who’s taking on Morrison’s 6 Mil salary this yr? Furthermore who will give up an non guaranteed 2nd rounder only to take on salary?

Just doesn’t make sense to me.

Maybe if Morrison was a nice role player that could offer something, but as of today, he’s an unknown. If he performs well once the season starts, why trade him? He’s would be decent insurance if Powell or Sasha goes down to injury.

I think the team will keep 13 players, but if he does make the team, good for him. I like his game and he’s a good bench/role player and did well while in Seattle before his injury.

Looking ahead to next season, the current team looks like a beast on paper! We are deep at every position.

    Point guard: Derek, Jordan, Shannon
    Shooting guard: Kobe, Sasha
    Small forward: Ron, Luke, Adam
    Power forward: Pau, Lamar, Josh
    Center: Andrew, DJ

    Things I’m looking forward to:

    1. Ron-Ron
    2. Healthy Andrew
    3. Full season of Shannon
    4. Re-energized/healthy Jordan
    5. Re-energized/healthy Sasha
    6. More opportunity/full season for Adam

Get Smush Parker back for Jordan Farmar

  18. dub824 says:

Yeah Kobe lights up everybody but this dude let him get 50 on 70 percent shooting. That’s horrible d

  19. laker fan says:

We dont need him. And no Smush Parker please. Dude is a scrub.

    • ricky says:

He’s a two-faced piece of sh*t player. How dare he talk trash on Kobe in that stupid interview. He’s so ungrateful. With the Lakers, he had personal success with career highs; not to mention he started for a legendary franchise. I’m glad this fool is out of the NBA, he’s not worth any teams’ time and money.

  20. TRUWARRIER says:

Sasha Play like crap last year…good signing in case sasha chokes again…

  21. gugy says:

  25. CB32 says:

GREAT move…weigh out the cost/benefit here people! If he’s garbage, he’s gone before the regular season tips off. Why not give him a shot?? He showed some great signs on the Sonics, and he could most definitely turn into a poor man’s Ariza with the right coaching (which he’ll have). If we keep him it gives us trade options as well (if he blossoms we could trade him, Ammo or Luke). Great move, can’t wait to see what happens.
