The Foam Finger: Why Bynum for Bosh doesn’t make sense

By now we’ve all heard the rumored swap, the subsequent denials by both front offices, and the hopeful voices of many a Lakers fan begging Mitch to “Do it!”.

I’m here to tell you why it would be a nice idea in theory, but more importantly – I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t make sense – without even touching the financial aspects of the trade.

Let’s start off with the reasons for the trade shall we?

1. Bosh is a superior player to Bynum – I know most Lakers fans, me included, see Bynum as a potential 28 & 12 guy that has showed flashes of being over the last two years before the consecutive knee injuries, but as of now he just simply is not that player… yet.

Bosh is 24 & 11 right now, has offensive range that makes Gasol look like Bynum, and is an athletic mobile defender who anchored an Olympic Gold Medal winning defense. I hate to say it, but Bosh is clearly the better player right now.

2. Bosh’s skill set meshes really well with Gasol – Gasol has more of a back to the basket game, Bosh can drive to the basket better and has more range, plus it’s safe to say that Bosh is more athletic than Gasol. This tandem works better for the Lakers than the current pairing, because right now, Gasol has to use his secondary skill set (face up game) more than his primary skill set (post up game).

This pairing allows Gasol to be naturally more effective than the current one.

The Foam Finger: New Years Resolutions

Hi folks,

My name is Jonny, and I will be penning a periodic column here at the Lakers Nation. My goal is to provide a unique viewpoint of the Lakers, but also of the NBA at large as well.

I’ll get into who I chose the title “The Foam Finger” in my next article, but first I will be trotting out the tried and true, and therefore cliched, team and player New Years resolution.

Note: I was going to do a separate note for Sun Yue on Chinese New Years, but then I remembered that he’s not with the team anymore, bummer.

Derek Fisher – I will take less Pull-Up-In-Transition-Jumpers (PUITJ) with the possible exception being if I pull up behind the 3-point line.

Jordan Farmar – I will continue to make smart decisions off the bench, and knock down open 3-pointers.

Shannon Brown – I will start dunking ferociously again (Is it just me, or has he only had like, two really nice dunks since LetShannonDunk.com was launched?).

Sasha Vujacic – I will check to see if my warranty is still valid, and if so, I will ask the manufacturer to send me the missing piece that Ray Allen stole from me in the 2008 NBA Finals

NBA Blogger’s Power Rankings: Week 12

smilesPower Rankings have always bothered the heck out of me. I mean, who gave Marc Stein or John Hollinger the right to tell me that the Lakers aren’t the best team in the league? What University do i need to graduate from in order to stand up to them and say “Enough! your rankings seem to be arbitrary at best and I find your lack of logic disturbing!”

Thanks to Obama (or not) this is the year of change. This year we stick it to the man. This year Bloggers from all around the NBA have come together to provide a power ranking for the people by the people – truly communism at it’s best (we do it for free too).

Each week a different NBA blog will host the Power Rankings.

This week’s Rankings are hosted by the Wizards’ fanbase “Bullets Forever”.

Blogger’s Power Rankings: New Years Edition

What is this exactly? In the words of Hornets 247’s Ryan Schwan, the man behind the concept…

One day, I was driving into work listening to the book The Wisdom of Crowds. The book was nothing if not convincing about the power of a group of experts, appropriately isolated, to pick the correct answer more often than a single or pair of experts. So – I figured if all of us blogger-types got together and created our own Power Rankings, we’d be able to put together a pretty good offering that fairly accurately reflects the state of the league.

When I got home, I sent out a request to those bloggers – some of whom decided to actually speak to me, and voila! the Blogger’s Power Rankings was born.  We’ll be coming at you from various host sites all season long, giving you the insight(maybe), witty comments(sometimes), and overall rankings for all the teams in the league.

Blogger Power Rankings, Week 5

Empty the Bench: There’s been very little movement at the top; the rest of the league is another story.

Every week a group of NBA writers, including the dons here at ETB, take some time to take a look around the NBA and rank its teams 1-30, best to worst, winners to losers, champs to chumps, so that you can get an easy-to-dissiminate update on the current state of the league. As you’ll see below, last year’s NBA Finals participants are off to a combined record of 30-3 and remain the top two teams in the league; the league’s worst two, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Clippers, are a combined 5-29.

These rankings are an aggregate of each writer’s individual ranks; comments are included to further shed light into the mind of our voters. Make sure you check out the list of links at the very bottom for more NBA thoughts from this week’s participants, and to contrast and compare with the Week 4 ranks, head on over to Bright Side of the Sun.

Without further ado, it’s Week 5 of the NBA Blogger Power Rankings.

The Lakers and Hot November Starts

Basketball-Reference.com: I probably don’t need to tell you this, but I’m going to anyway: the Los Angeles Lakers are torching the NBA right now. They’re currently 12-1, they rank 3rd in the league in offensive efficiency with an ORtg of 111.4, and they have the NBA’s best defense (96.5 DRtg) — better even than the Boston Celtics, whose stifling D was one of the major reasons the Lakers lost in the NBA Finals this past June. With Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum in the fold full-time this season, we knew they’d be a formidable team, but I think it’s safe to say they’ve exceeded even their most optimistic expectations going into the season.

Exactly how good have the Lakers been so far? Well, here at Basketball-Reference.com, one of our favorite tools for measuring team quality is something we call the “Simple Rating System“. It’s basically a team’s average point differential per game, but also adjusted for strength of schedule, and we’ve already proven that it’s one of the best predictors of future performance available. Through 13 games, the Lakers’ SRS is an eye-popping 14.00, easily tops in the league (Cleveland is 2nd with 9.64).

Just for comparison’s sake, last year’s Celtics, who streamrolled the league en route to 66 wins and an NBA title, had an SRS of “only” 9.31. In fact, the best full-season SRS mark ever belongs to the 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks, who also rolled up 66 wins and an NBA crown, thanks to the efforts of Oscar Robertson and league MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Their SRS score that year? 11.91, more than two points per game worse than L.A.’s current clip.

Here’s the list of the NBA’s all-time best teams by SRS:

Blogger MVP and ROY Rankings – Version 1.0

Lebron James #1, Kobe Bryant #2. Sound-off…

Hoops Adict: Welcome back to another season of the Blogger MVP and ROY Rankings! For those of you who are new to this, the guys at BrewHoop organized a bi-weekly blogger poll, ranking the Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year candidates in the NBA. BrewHoop hosted the first installment last season and now, right here at Hoops Addict, we’ve got the debut for the 2008/09 season.

Votes were compiled on a simple 10-9-8 etc. and 5-4-3 etc. basis. Points are listed, with first place votes in parentheses. The following lists are composite rankings which take into consideration the votes of all 15 panelists based on the above scoring system.

I thought about making my own comments each time, but, to be brutally honest, a lot of the comments from other bloggers were more insightful. So, with that in mind, I’ve passed on leaving my own comments and instead used comments from other bloggers instead.
