Kobe Starts All-Star Game, Lasts Just 3 Minutes

CBS2: Lakers star Kobe Bryant played only the first 3 minutes and headed to the bench, likely for good, to rest his right pinkie, which has a torn ligament. He quickly had his hand wrapped in ice and threw on a sweatsuit, ensuring that he won’t be a repeat MVP winner.

In a proud city still restoring its unique beauty, the Eastern Conference repaired its own image. Ray Allen scored 28 points, making three straight 3-pointers in the final 3:15, and LeBron James added 27 as the East, widely considered the NBA’s weaker half, beat the Western Conference 134-128 in Sunday night’s All-Star Game.

Last year, the West humiliated the East in a 153-132 rout in Las Vegas when Kobe Bryant and Co. rewrote the event’s record books. However, this time led by Allen’s 14 fourth-quarter points and a stunning dunk by James with 55 seconds left, the East salvaged some pride and can return to the season’s second half with bragging rights.

James, who added nine assists and eight rebounds, was the MVP for the second time in three years. He also won the honor in 2006.

Video: Dwight Howard’s “SUPERMAN” Jam!

If you’re a fan of basketball - or athletic evolution - then watch this clip. Many are calling this dunk, “the greatest dunk in league history.” If you missed it, LD2k is dropping it for the world…

Kobe Video: “If I dislocate it again, I’m probably in trouble”

ESPN has posted a video of Kobe talking about his injury with reporters.

Basically talks about the injury and at one point lifts up his right hand and you can see how largely swollen his pinky is.

Also, says he’ll play a few minutes tomorrow night and sit “my old butt down.”

He’s pretty confident he can play the rest of the season - just needs to be careful.

Kobe will play in All-Star game

League policy requires him to play or sit out the next game for the Lakers. He might be in the game for only a few minutes.

L.A. Times: Ready, willing, able or not … h-e-r-e’s Kobe!

Despite protests by the Lakers and Kobe Bryant, NBA officials insisted that he remain in the lineup for Sunday’s All-Star game, which Bryant said he would do.

According to NBA policy, any selectee who plays in his team’s last game — as Bryant did, scoring 29 points in Wednesday’s win in Minnesota — has to play in the All-Star game or sit out his team’s next game.

It was after the Lakers got home Thursday that Bryant’s injury, thought to be a dislocated right pinkie, was re-diagnosed as a ligament tear.

With the Lakers medical staff and management right up to owner Jerry Buss counseling Bryant to undergo surgery, which would have meant missing six weeks, Bryant made the decision to keep playing.

Bryant, the leading vote-getter in the West, attended Friday’s media session with his right hand in a brace and the last two fingers splinted.

Lakers trying to convince NBA to let Kobe skip All-Star Game

Hopefully, he can have it skipped. No reason for him to play an exhibition game that doesn’t mean anything. Sound-off in the comments and tell us what you think!

ESPN: The Los Angeles Lakers are hoping that Kobe Bryant gets clearance from the league to miss Sunday’s All-Star Game in New Orleans after announcing Thursday that Bryant has a torn ligament in his right pinkie.

But Bryant doesn’t yet have that clearance — and may not get it.

A league official confirmed Thursday night that the NBA is not looking for potential replacements to fill Bryant’s spot on the Western Conference squad. That’s because the league office still expects Bryant to start and play for the West, even if it’s only for a brief cameo, after he played for the Lakers all the way through to their final game before the All-Star break Wednesday in Minnesota.

Bryant scored 29 points in 35 minutes in Wednesday’s 117-92 win at Minnesota. Bryant sat out the fourth quarter and had the finger X-rayed after the game.

The Lakers, according to team sources, are trying to convince the league that Bryant should be excused after a visit Thursday to hand specialist Dr. Steven Shin revealed a ligament tear. Bryant is expected to make that plea personally once he arrives in New Orleans on Friday after Shin recommend that Bryant undergo surgery that would likely sideline him for six weeks.

Nowitzki in for Bryant in Three-Point Shootout

NBA.com: Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki will replace Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant (dislocated pinkie finger, right hand) in the 2008 Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout, to be held on NBA All-Star Saturday Night, Feb. 16, at New Orleans Arena. Nowitzki, who won the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout in 2006 at All-Star in Houston, will compete in the event for the fifth time. He also competed in 2000, 2001, and 2007.

Although he is unable to participate in the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout with the injury, Bryant will play in Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game.

Kobe re-injures hand; may sit out All-Star weekend events

Bad news for the fans, but good news for Kobe in terms of rest; even though it will be hard to not see the best in the world playing (maybe)… it’s good he’s resting up for what counts: the rest of the season and the Lakers’ legit title run…

O.C. Register: Bryant (29 points) aggravated the injury after a second-quarter slash from Rashad McCants — postgame X-rays showed no further damage — and Bryant will see a hand specialist Thursday. He is headed to New Orleans for All-Star weekend regardless, but he is questionable for the game and especially the 3-point contest Saturday.

“It’s not looking like I’ll be out there shooting 3s,” Bryant said.

Kobe Headlines Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout

NBA.com: The Toronto Raptors’ Jason Kapono will defend his title in this year’s Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16, at New Orleans Arena as part of NBA All-Star Saturday Night.

Kapono will attempt to become the first back-to-back winner of the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout since Peja Stojakovic won the 2002 and 2003 titles. Stojakovic will return to the competition representing the hometown New Orleans Hornets for the first time since finishing as runner-up in the 2004 competition. Stojakovic and Kapono will be joined by Western Conference starter and 10-time All-Star Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers, Daniel Gibson of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Richard Hamilton of the Detroit Pistons and two-time MVP Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns.

This will be great for Kobe. I can’t wait to see him out there competing. The guy is an amazing talent from behind the arc. Check out D3moralizing by LD2k (a compilation of Kobe’s three pointers from last season).
