Stay Cool, I’ll See You in the Summer League

It happened so fast. As quickly as it began, it was over.

No, I am not talking about the magical 2007-08 Lakers season; I’m talking about the 2008 NBA Summer League.

Somehow, the big wigs over at the NBA offices thought it would be a novel idea to collect nearly every Rookie and dude gunning for a roster spot in Las Vegas for a week of footloose and fancy free playing glorified pickup games. The rosters are amalgamations of marginally talented players, most of whom will never see the fourth quarter of a blowout game, let alone a NBA preseason contest.

The Lakers delegation to the Las Vegas Summer League was no exception. With the exception of Coby Karl and former San Antonio Spur James White, no other member of the roster has had any NBA experience. That fact alone could make any Laker fan cringe at the thought of sitting through 40 minute Summer League contest.

Coby Karl’s Whirlwind Journey Continues

HOOPSWORLD: Last summer Coby Karl was a kid just trying to find a way to make it to the NBA. After a decent showing at the NBA’s Pre-Draft Camp in Orlando, Karl went undrafted. When the Lakers signed him to a summer league contract not long after, there were those around the league who laughed it off as nothing more than a favor by Mitch Kupchak to Coby’s father George Karl done simply because of the longstanding friendship between the two.

As it turned out, nothing could be further from the truth. Karl demonstrated last season he has what it takes to carve out a niche for himself in the NBA.

“I didn’t feel like I was that bad at Pre-Draft Camp, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to get drafted,” Karl told HOOPSWORLD on Sunday in Las Vegas. “But I was on the LA Lakers last year, and it was a great experience for me.”

Karl has always been a student of the game. He often studied players like Nate McMillan and Gary Payton while growing up and watching his father coach the Seattle SuperSonics. During his rookie season in the league, Karl added to his already extensive knowledge of the game by closely observing some of his veteran teammates.

“I was able to watch Kobe work and see what he does to get ready for games. I was able to watch Derek Fisher on and off the court. Those things help me a lot because those are the little things that make you a good player in this league.”

Lakers Summer League Schedule and Roster

The Lakers summer league kicked off with a scrimage today against the Clippers. This should be interesting as the roster was released as well. James White (a LOT of people wanted him drafted over Farmar a few years ago) was included on our roster.

Below is a schedule and complete schedule and roster of the Lakers Summer League team…
