Pau Gasol makes a stand on defense

L.A. Times: Gasol never has been known for his defense, for being a stopper, for being something other than a skilled offensive player.

But there Gasol was Tuesday night, grinding it out against Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki, putting the clamps on the Mavericks’ All-Star forward during the Lakers’ 106-99 victory over the Mavericks.

“Definitely, defense was a big challenge tonight for me, to be able to step out and make it tough for him and I think I was pretty successful,” Gasol said. “It’s a big key when you stop Dirk on their team.”

It was Gasol’s job to contain his counterpart at power forward, and he did.

Nowitzki finished with 14 points, but he missed 12 of his 17 shots. Gasol had a lot to do with that.

Nowitzki was one for nine in the second half, his last basket coming with 10:14 left in the third quarter. He missed all five of his shots in the fourth quarter. Gasol played a major role in that happening.

“Pau is really a great player, both at center and power forward,” Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said. “He was a good matchup for us tonight. Dirk’s a great shooter and we were able to contain him at least somewhat, and Pau had a big hand in doing that.”

At 7 feet, Gasol has the length to bother his man.

Bobcats end preseason 0-7 with loss to Lakers

Another impressive showing by Jordan Farmar, while Sun Yue has to consider himself lucky for having a guaranteed contract. One pre-season game remains!

Yahoo!: Pau Gasol scored 13 points and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Charlotte Bobcats 88-77 on Thursday night without the ailing Kobe Bryant.

Bryant, the NBA’s reigning MVP, missed the exhibition game because of residual swelling in his hyper-extended right knee following a collision with teammate Josh Powell on Tuesday night against the Bobcats in San Diego.

The crowd of 12,147 at Honda Center let out a collective groan when public address announcer Lawrence Tanter gave them the news following the player introductions.

“I’ve got a little bit of puffiness in the back of the knee. It’s just from the trauma of landing the way I landed,” Bryant said. “So we’ll just knock that out and make sure the swelling’s out of there, which should be soon. Then I’m OK. After seeing the injury on TV, I’m surprised it’s not worse, to be honest.”

Kobe Avoids Joining The Pre-Season Ward or Is The Pre-Season Over Yet?

As the pre-season wears on (far too long in my opinion, but that’s a rant for another time) the injuries start mounting around the league. First it’s Yao in Houston, then its Williams in Utah and tonight almost saw Kobe go down with a hyper-extended knee. (Hey at least it wasn’t an ankle again. A little new injury thrown into the mix) I’m more than sure that Kobe won’t see too many minutes in what’s left of the pre-season and hopefully (which from the looks of it, it will) give him enough time to get back to 100% to continue with the business of the real season. A season that could be one of the biggest the Lakers have seen in a while.

That 4 to 5 game pre-season Phil talked about years ago is looking real good about now, isn’t it?

In the meantime, the Lakers played another sporadic game; grabbing an impressive double-digit lead, turning their way over to a double-digit deficit, and then running it back up to another double-digit lead then winding up a narrow win.

Welcome once again to the shoddiest rollercoaster on the fairgrounds pick-ups – the pre-season.

Gasol & Bynum get a lesson in length

L.A Times: Though it was just an exhibition, there was a matchup that created some interest in the game between the Lakers and Toronto Raptors on Sunday night in the “shootout” at Staples Center.

The Lakers have the Twin Tower pair of 7-footers Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum that faced the Toronto big-man tandem of 6-10 Chris Bosh and 6-11 Jermaine O’Neal.

For the Lakers’ pair that still is a work in progress, this was a gauge for them, an opportunity for Gasol and Bynum to see how they would fare against two talented frontcourt players.

“They are very good low-post players,” Gasol said. “It’s a challenge to guard them.”

Gasol and Bynum held their own, doing their thing in helping the Lakers to a 112-89 victory.

Gasol had seven points and seven rebounds; Bynum nine points and four rebounds.

“It’s a great gauge,” Bynum said. “There definitely are two All-Star players on the other side. It’s definitely a good test.”

Lakers Beat Gasol’s Old Team Barcelona…

L.A. Times: It was the fourth exhibition game for the Lakers, another chance to make strides as they prepare for the regular-season opener Oct. 28 at home against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Lakers played Regal FC Barcelona on Saturday night in the “shootout” at Staples Center and Coach Phil Jackson had a few things he wanted his team to accomplish.

“Exhibit our talent,” Jackson said, smiling.

For Lakers forward Pau Gasol, the game had more meaning. He played five seasons with FC Barcelona and still lives in the Spanish city where he was born.

Gasol wanted to win the game, which the Lakers did, 108-104, before 14,572 fans. Tonight at 7:30 the Lakers will play the Toronto Raptors, who defeated the Clippers, 93-89, in the first game Saturday. Barcelona will play the Clippers today at 4:30.

Gasol, who had 13 points, entertained the Barcelona players over the weekend, but he still wanted them to taste defeat.

Kobe Bryant did his part to make sure the Lakers improved to 2-2 in the preseason by scoring 28 points on 10-for-14 shooting, and getting six steals.

Juan Carlos Navarro, Gasol’s teammate on Spain’s Olympic silver medal-winning team in Beijing and in the NBA last season with Memphis, was the game’s leading scorer with 34 points. He made seven of 13 three-point attempts.

BEST IN THE WEST!

We’re baaaaaaack! The Lakers have done what was months ago, the unimaginable. Get ready, the real season is about to begin.

Yahoo! Sports: The Los Angeles Lakers began the season in chaos 5 1/2 months ago. They finished it as the Western Conference champions.

Pau Gasol had 22 points, leading MVP candidate Kobe Bryant added 20, and the Lakers beat the short-handed Sacramento Kings 124-101 Tuesday night to clinch the No. 1 seed in the West and home-court advantage throughout the conference playoffs.

Lakers run over Spurs; grab top spot in West

Yahoo! Sports: The Los Angeles Lakers went from No. 3 to No. 2 in the Western Conference on Sunday. They may soon be No. 1.

MVP candidate Kobe Bryant had 20 points, five rebounds and five assists before sitting out the fourth quarter, and the Lakers routed the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs 106-85 for their seventh win in eight games.

The Lakers (56-25), who clinched their first Pacific Division championship in four years and the No. 3 seed in the West on Friday night, assured themselves of a second-place finish in the conference.

A victory over visiting Sacramento on Tuesday night in the regular-season finale would put the Lakers in position to be the top seed, giving them homecourt advantage in the first three rounds of the playoffs.

Lakers Clinch Pacific With Win Over Hornets

Who would have thought we would be Division Champions? I don’t see too many hands up. Great accomplishment considering our expectations before the season, now our eyes are set on the Conference crown.

Yahoo! Sports: The Los Angeles Lakers are Pacific Division champions for the first time in four years and have a shot at the Western Conference title after winning their most important game of the season.

But they had to survive a tremendous scare, blowing all but one point of a 30-point lead.

Kobe Bryant, making a push for his first MVP award, had 29 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, and the Lakers held off the New Orleans Hornets 107-104 Friday night to move within a half-game of the conference-leading Hornets.

Pau Gasol added 25 points, Derek Fisher scored 15, and Lamar Odom had 13 points and 16 rebounds for the Lakers (55-25), who never trailed but weren’t assured of victory until the final minute
