Morrison rides a hot hand in Las Vegas

ammoL.A. Times: Reading the reviews might have been the first mistake for the Lakers’ Adam Morrison.

“I had a lot of criticism after my first year,” Morrison said of his rookie season with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2006-07, having been the third overall pick in the NBA draft.

“I remember one website saying I was the worst player in the NBA. All that stuff.”

The 6-foot-8 forward is trying to find himself in Las Vegas — along with his shot — in the friendlier, light-on-defense confines of the NBA Summer League, at the wise suggestion of Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak.

Keeping it in perspective because, after all, this is summer league, not the heart of the NBA season, things are going well. He has averaged 20.8 points in four games. He scored 20 points against the Clippers on Monday, and had 17 points the next night against Oklahoma City.

“He’s a shot maker… and it looks to me like he’s playing with confidence,” Kupchak said during Monday’s game.

Summer League Recap: Los Angeles Lakers

If you were to busy to read any sort of news about the Laker’s Summer League, then we have the article for you! Eric Pincus breaks it down for you on HOOPSWORLD.COM

Record: 2-3

Key Stats: The Lakers matched up well statistically with their opponents with most major categories relatively close. The team’s rudimentary version of the triangle offense led to a solid 15.6 apg but only 82.2 ppg. Unfortunately LA gave up 87.8 ppg which can partially be blamed on poor defensive rotations (specifically on the perimeter). While the Lakers were only able to hit 35.0% of their three point shots, their opponents shot an impressive 50.8%.

Highlights: Opening night for the Lakers and they’re down by a point in the closing seconds. The set play fails and the team is forced to scramble. Jordan Farmar drives and kicks to a wide open Javaris Crittenton who calmly nails the three. Lakers beat the Milwaukee Bucks 66-64, Crittenton hitting the game winner in his very first game representing the Los Angeles Lakers.

Standout Player: Crittenton stood out as the best player on the floor in most games. He averaged 17.0 ppg on 48.5% shooting from the field. Leaving out the limited minutes he played against the Philadelphia 76ers, Crittenton averaged a gaudy 21.3 ppg at a 52.5% clip. He proved he could take over games offensively, scoring in bunches. His prior experience playing in the triangle offense (high school) served to his advantage. Instead of laboring to find his spots in a complicated offense, Crittenton was just able to go to work. Much of his scoring came through improvisation. It’ll take some time to see how he adjusts the full fledged system the team will run in October, but Crittenton showed enough for many to realize the Lakers got a steal with the 19th pick in the draft. Crittenton was named to the Las Vegas Summer League All-Star Team.

Yahoo Sports ranks Javaris #3 in Summer League performance

More praise for the young, promising PG. Yahoo wrote up a “winners and losers list” and they ranked Crittenton #3 on their Winners list. Check it out:

Yahoo.com: 3. Javaris Crittenton, Los Angeles Lakers – Crittenton might have the biggest upside out of all the point guards at summer league mostly due to his size (6-foot-5) and athleticism. He showed the ability to get into the lane and finish near the basket. Crittenton averaged 17 points and three assists and, for the most part, outplayed Jordan Farmar.

Crittenton for the Win!

javaris_crittenton.jpgIn his first Summer League game, our rookie, Javaris Crittenton, had a great game with 18 points (8-13)/2ast/4rbs/2stls/1blk. He also had a sick crossover and dunk to shut all doubters who thought we should have drafted the other guy. Oh and did I mention that he had the game winning basket? This is a rook that wants to win and isn’t afraid to step-up to challenge.

“Java” just became my favorite Laker rookie.
