Not a good way to start the weekend that’s for sure.
ESPN: Lakers starting center Andrew Bynum left Friday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves because of a strained left Achilles’ tendon.
Bynum exited the game with 10 minutes 9 seconds left in the third quarter and headed to the locker room along with Lakers trainer Gary Vitti where the 7-footer remained for the rest of the game.
The fifth-year center, who was averaging 20.0 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks during the Lakers’ four-game winning streak coming into Friday’s game, had 11 points on four-for-five shooting and five rebounds before leaving.
Bynum will be re-evaluated Saturday by team doctors.
Its great to have a healthy Drew, now to show him off in the playoffs!
O.C. Register: The past two years around this time, Andrew Bynum was dragging one leg behind. He was trying not to ask the draining “Why me?” questions and trying not to get asked the annoying “When are you coming back?” questions.
Those slow, long days made him fully aware that not everything blooms anew in the spring.
So why wasn’t he embracing the opportunity to run and play this year after evading his annual January knee injury? Why wasn’t he bouncing around the court like a big kid jumping through rainbows from the sprinkler?
Maybe it was the malaise that Kobe Bryant says hit all the Lakers, the real season of the playoffs close enough for them to start looking ahead. More likely it was the ache in his hip and his knee that left Bynum taking his greater health for granted.
It took a man wiser than Bynum’s years to get the 22-year-old spring chicken realizing he should be appreciating the chance to play and play hard this year.

A small update on Drew’s hip.
NBC Sports: Andrew Bynum’s performance Wednesday night was clearly hindered by the bruise and ruptured bursa sac in his right hip. Bynum looked strong in the first half but slowed down considerably in the second half, pulling down only two points and two boards. Bynum finished the game with only ten points and eleven rebounds. If this continues, the Lakers may decide to sit Bynum.
Andrew is making the right choice. It will be nice to watch LO and KB do work for team USA though!
Twitter: Bynum said he turned down Team USA’s request to be apart of the player pool simply because he needs the summer to rest his body.
Twitter: I asked Bynum abt declining invite for USA Basketball. He said it was easy decision bc of past body breakdowns. “Rest, man.”
Andrew Bynum got banged up a bit too; he also sat out the 2nd half of the Portland game.
L.A. Times: Center is wearing two knee braces and he sits out the second half because of a hip contusion.
Lakers center Andrew Bynum has been wearing another knee brace, this one because of swelling in his sore left knee.
Bynum said he was injured when he collided with Charlotte Bobcats forward Stephen Jackson during Wednesday night’s game at Staples Center.
Bynum still played in the game Friday night against the Denver Nuggets and Saturday night against Portland, but he is in pain.
Bynum started at center against the Trail Blazers, but he didn’t look mobile. He logged only nine minutes, and didn’t play at all in the second half because of a right hip contusion.
“It’s some swelling in it and I’m trying to get it out,” Bynum said of the knee before the game. “The only way to do that is rest. So over the All-Star break with that time that we have, I should be able to get back.”
That it’s the same knee that he had surgery on didn’t leave Bynum nervous. “I knew it was swollen up,” he said. “But it’s not anything that’s going to be too bad.
“It’s like a pain thing [and] range of motion. I’ve just got to get the swelling out and get back up. I’ll be getting treatment and just chillin’.”

It seems that Bynum is now more dedicated to improving. This is a good sign!
L.A. Times: Back when Ron Artest was still introducing himself to his new teammates several months ago, Andrew Bynum declared a personal goal. He wanted to make the All-Star team this season.
It didn’t happen, which disappointed the 22-year-old, but perhaps led to some resolve.
“I’m going to go out there and keep balling the way I am,” Bynum said Friday. “It’s just given me the same goal to strive for next year and something else to push for this summer when I’m working on my game.”
Earlier this week, Bynum was worried there wouldn’t be a true center on the Western Conference team, a possibility that became reality when the reserves were announced.
Phoenix’s Amare Stoudemire was voted to start at center by the fans, and Pau Gasol and Tim Duncan are power forwards who probably will play some center at the Feb. 14 game.
“I pretty much knew what was going on,” said Bynum, who earlier called the process of selecting reserves “political.”

Andrew missed the plane flight to Toronto. Here is what Phil had to say:
L.A. Times: “His bags made it to Toronto, but he didn’t,” Jackson said, smiling. “So obviously he got up and put his bags outside the door and something happened between there and the bus, like going back to sleep again, or whatever. … He’s all right. A rookie mistake you would call it, even though he’s not a rookie. There’s a standard fine for it. He paid his own plane fare.”
Good news or bad news? What do you think, Lakers Nation? Sound-off…
O.C. Register: The agent for Andrew Bynum was caught off-guard like the rest of the Lakers world by the New York Post story speculating that the Lakers are interested in sending the young center to Toronto for Chris Bosh.
“I had no idea,” said agent David Lee on Monday. “I wish he (the reporter) had called me. I’m in New York.”
Lee said any “talks” between the teams would be a bit difficult considering Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak currently is out of the country.
Andrew Bynum was told about the Bynum for Chris Bosh rumors; glad to hear this from Drew; he played extremely well vs. the Bucks!
ESPN: But Bynum says there wasn’t any extra motivation.
“What rumor is that?” Bynum asked when he was questioned if the trade speculation had sparked him to play the way he did on Sunday.
When he was told it was for Bosh, a four-time All-Star and Olympic gold medal-winning teammate of Bryant, he replied with his patented phrase:
“Oh, that’s crazy.”
Is it that crazy?
The Post story quotes Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo as “not seeking a deal or discussing Bosh with any team, much less the Lakers,” but wouldn’t it be crazier for Toronto to wait around and hope that Bosh doesn’t opt out of the final year of his contract this summer instead of shipping him for a sure thing before the Feb. 18 trade deadline?
“I don’t even care,” Bynum said. “I love playing basketball. I’ll play this game anywhere. It’s not the first time that it’s happened to me, so I’m used to it.”
