The Hurricane Katrina of the Lakers Nation

katrina.jpg

Have you boarded up all your windows? Have you planned your exit strategy? Are you truly prepared for the most devastating hurricane to ever hit the Lakers Nation? Will you remain with the Nation during the long rebuilding phase? Will you take root in a different city, for a different team, until the Nation is rebuilt?

We all have different answers and we all have different motivations.

One thing, however, applies to us all… the Hurricane is striking.

No matter how you look at it, this is a good thing and this is a bad thing. For sure it is a bad thing because of what it has and will continue to do to us… it will divide us. Just like the front office has too many voices and too many opinions, so do all the fans. None of us knows which way to move. That has led to a lot of paralysis. The good is that the hurricane will assuredly rescue us from our paralysis. One way or the other, we will be able to move forward. The question is, what will be left for us?

If you believe in the long tradition of the Lakers and in the long standing success of the Buss family ownership, then you believe the hurricane will usher in new opportunity and new blood that will give us all significant light at the end of the tunnel. In short, we will either contend now or within a few years as a result of this storm.

Lakers Pre-Season Progress Report

If you follow the Lakers Nation, then you already know this report card isn’t going to be straight A’s.

The purpose here is to take an in-depth look at the secondary players in addition to our team play to find our strengths and weaknesses as of now. Kobe is less of a concern because we all know he can play and it’s still pre-season so you can’t really expect him to play at his peak. Besides, whether he will or should be traded is an entirely different subject.

Most winning teams are greater than the sum of their parts. Our Lakers, on the other hand, are actually less than the sum of their parts. The team cohesion is so lacking that we’re actually better on paper than we are in person.

Since I’m as optimistic as possible, let’s begin with the good. Our second unit has played extraordinarily well throughout the pre-season. This unit, led by Jordan Farmar, shows tremendous energy on the defensive end and a lot of spirit in their up tempo strategy. The driving factor is Farmar, because he has emerged as our greatest playmaker. In one year we’ve gone from terrible Smush to a solid playmaker in Jordan.

Tim: The Old Man has Officially Lost It

By now you’ve read that Jerry Buss has said Kobe Bryant isn’t untouchable.

Most fans believed the front office spin they heard over the summer, that Kobe Bryant would not be traded. We even heard that teams were abstaining from making offers because the understanding around the league was that the Lakers would not deal Kobe.

Some fans figured that eventually Lakers management would consider trading Kobe simply because of his opt out clause at the end of next season.

Today’s article citing Jerry Buss’ take on this hashed and rehashed issue has most fans up in arms for one reason or another. The season is just underway and it appeared that Kobe decided months ago that he was committed to this season, win, lose, or draw. We haven’t heard or seen anything to suggest otherwise which makes Jerry’s comments all the more perplexing. However, Jerry Buss’ actions aren’t as curious when you consider the entire sequence of events and put them into context.

Jerry Buss had a tumultuous off-season. His golden child who sells out the Staples Center as well as road venues went on a tirade that essentially humiliated Dr. Buss. Simultaneously, Kobe was telling 570AM that no one from the Lakers organization was communicating with him. Later that same night, Dr. Buss was arrested for driving under the influence with a young lady sitting in the passenger seat as he drove the wrong way on the road.
